The Upper Hand Salon: Hyde Park

I’ve been going to Holden at The Upper Hand for 2 – 3 years now. He’s one of the best hair stylist and colorists in town. I’ve recommended him to lots of friends!

Absolutely beyond happy with my cut and my moms cut from Gustavo at the upper hand. He was able to execute both of our cuts amazingly. My moms hair is short and he made it edgy and voluminous my hair was long and needed some help. Overall Gustavo was awesome and I highly recommend him. He also has a killer personality and will keep you laughing the entire time at the salon :) !

First time going to Upper Hand Salon and absolutely loved it! Melannie did my hair and she did a perfect job. I wanted 12 inches off and she created such an edgy bob for me and amazing color. I have received compliments on my look all day long! She rocked it! I would definitely recommend Melannie at Upper Hand Salon.

Love the salon it’s open and really clean. Holden is amazing! Great color and love the way he cuts my hair. Staff is really friendly and attentive.

I am very particular about my men’s haircut and have trouble finding a good stylist. If you are like me, you will be very pleased if you give this place a try. I have my haircut with Sandy, she does a very good men’s cut in any style you are looking for. She has lots of experience (over 9 years) so there is nothing she can’t do. As for the establishment and the environment. Very aesthetically pleasing, staff is very friendly and not pretentious. They also offer a variety of beverages including beer & wine for their customers. I will certainly be back often for my haircuts.

I just got my hair done at this new location and I absolutely love how it came out. I got partial highlights and a cut by Courtney. She is amazing! Staff was also really nice. I will definitely be back for my touch up.

I’ve been going to Sarah for years… she’s the best. I made the awful decision of going to a different salon once (never again) and she was able to fix the heinous color job they did. She’s a balayage expert!

This is a great new addition to the Upper Hand Brand. This is their 3^rd location. Crazy thing, ALL 3 locations are on Westheimer. The location is super modern, bright white, lots of natural light, young trendy professional staff (but yet all familiar faces that I have seen at their other location). The wait area is AWESOME, free Keurig coffee with lots of flavors, lots of Tazo teas, «Spa Water» infused with lemon and cucumber, YUMMY!
I have been a client of the upper hand for over 5 years (usually go to the River Oaks location) but my stylist is now at this location (Hyde Park). The front desk was quick to great and accommodate all my needs, actually everyone was. Every employee who saw me said hi and asked if I needed anything and how I was doing. I told the stylist what I wanted for cut and color and the results are AWESOME. Covered all the salt and pepper, making it look natural and the cut was just what I asked for. Even my coworkers were like what is different about you :) they couldn’t tell, unlike the time I used box color at home The Upper Hand never lets me down.
I would highly recommend this new location.

I had a haircut here with Heather and I was so disappointed to the level of crying on the way home from the salon.
I brought multiple images of the hairstyle I wanted; they were blunt cuts, between the jaw line and shoulder, a few had light layers or a gradual angle towards the front. When I discussed these styles and images we agreed upon a blunt cut with a few layers and a small angle towards the front, with the length to be about an inch above the shoulders. I had very long hair and was also cutting over 14 inches to donate it today so after braiding and cutting off the length, Heather washed my hair and proceeded to do a «foundation cut,» a blunt cut, before adding any angles or layers. Somewhere between this cut and leaving the salon, my hair was botched. When it looked like she was using a thinning tool I asked her what she was doing and she told me she was «texturizing» my hair. I was extremely concerned when it looked like half my hair was being removed, but she kept reassuring me it was giving it the shape I was looking for. After she finished cutting my hair I began getting concerned that there was too much hair on the floor and that it should have only been straightening out the length from when my hair was cut to donate. She styled my hair with so much product that I couldn’t really tell what the cut was. When I left the salon and got in my car I started crying and knew when I washed out the product I was going to be shocked.
I proceeded home to see the damage and after washing and blow drying it looked like the haircut was done by a child with scissors. I straightened my hair to make sure the cut was correct and I immediately noticed that my hair cut had EXTREME layers beyond repair, a drastically uneven cut, and it had been rounded out in the back. This was not the haircut I had asked for.
I would highly discourage someone from going to Heather, I cannot comment on other staff members but the one I had made me leave disappointed with a botched cut.
