If the inverse of the Broken Windows Theory would suggest less vandalism and more community pride, then the Sunshine Food Mart is a shining example. Living across from a dilapidated, graffiti-covered building couldn’t have been pleasant. But not too long ago, workers were busy refurbishing the place, and a little over a week ago, it was open for business. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have a store of true«convenience» right smack in the middle of my neighborhood. Within easy walking distance and not on a busy corner, I know I’ll be making casual trips up to the Sunshine Food Mart for beer, cigarettes, chips, soda, sudden ice cream cravings, even motor oil. It’s a small shop, but it’s got the essentials. In fact, it may become my morning coffee stop on the way to work. Talking to the owner, they’re already doing a brisk business, so the area is obviously glad they’re here. All I can say is, «Welcome to the neighborhood!»
