This place is getting worse by the minute. Customer service has gone downhill and the food is disgusting. You’re better off going to whataburger across the street. Seriously… don’t waste your time or money.

Love the food here, I have never had anything disappointing. I love the Carrot Cake! this a favorite of my coworkers and myself. I stop here when I have my weekend ride through the med center.

Best vegetarian burger in town, but they do charge extra for it. Their fries are phenomenal.

I came here for lunch and ordered a Swiss cheesburger and waffle fries. Burger was just too heavy for me. If there is a next time for me, I am opting for their kids size. I literally felt full until the next day. I would even order their waffle fries alone, they were that good!

This was my first time to Southwell’s and I ordered a Monterey Jack Cheeseburger all the way with fries. It was a pretty damn good burger and had a very homemade taste to it. I also love how the buns were so soft and moist! Their fries are really good, but I also tried the waffle fries and i’d have to say those were the crispiest best tasting waffle fries I’ve ever had. I’m looking forward to trying the beer battered onion rings next time! Another thing I really liked about Southwell’s is how all of their cheeseburgers and non-cheeseburgers were all the same price for single patty burgers. They don’t charge extra to put cheese on the burgers. Price only increases for double meats or bacon, which to me is fair. Service is quick and there is plenty of seating, with an option to sit outside on nice days. UPDATE12.16.2015 — Had the Swiss Cheeseburger(all the way with Mayo/Mustard) and the waffle fries and it was oh so good! I saw they had a mushroom swiss burger which I must try as well as the beer battered rings next time!

Southwells is one of those places that you go when you’re craving a simple, cheap, and greasy burger. It’s easy to eat here for under $ 10 per person, and they have plenty of options for burger types. I’m partial to the mushroom swiss burger. Sometimes the burgers can be a little overcooked, but it’s a burger and nothing terrible. The waffle fries are the starch you should get. They’re seasoned which makes them ten times better than the onion rings or natural cut fries. Every time I’ve ordered to go, I’ve been able to get my food within a 10 minute time frame, which is about how long it takes for me to drive there from my apartment. If you get cold easily, you should bring a jacket to this place. During lunch, it’s packed, but dinner is pretty slow. There’s plenty of seating inside and out — not the most comfortable since they’re wooden booths, but exactly what you’d expect at a divey kind of place like this.

This is your average burger place, a step up from drive-thru but nothing special none-the-less. Did not care for their regular French fries and the beer battered onion rings are out of a bag. The waffles fries were the best option but I wouldn’t call them great.

So let’s start by saying, how blasphemous it is that they do NOT have sweet tea. I am southern and I expect a sweet tea with my greasy burgers. Overall this joint is pretty clean and the staff are friendly and working hard. It’s a pretty good burger, but nothing special. Order the waffles fries to round out the meal, they give you a good portion and come well seasoned.

I was strolling the streets looking for a juicy burger that would cure my loneliness and hunger pains. I had heard this place was great and as I strolled by I also noticed it was empty. Which is a good thing because I hate eating alone in a crowded place. I decided on the avocado burger and sweet potato fries. As I walked to the table sad love songs were serenading me to my final destination, table for 1. At first glance everything looked great. It had fresh veggies, thick meat and ripe avocado. But it lacked flavor and although it had temporarily stopped my hunger, I had not been satisfied! This burger tasted very homemade. I really appreciated the fresh and plentiful veggies but I really just wanted greasy and juicy. Sometimes you just need to get down and dirty and if you’re going to go that route than the calories better be worth it!

Southwell’s is located within walking distance of where I live. It’s in a strip mall with CVS, and other eateries/stores. It’s a pretty clean place, you walk in and order your food at the counter. You pick your own table as well. I have had a burger here and honestly it’s not great. Thin patty of meat wedged between two soggy soft buns with lettuce tomato and pickles. It wasn’t terrible but I definitely wouldn’t get burgers here. On to the real stuff, I swear I could eat their waffle fries all day everyday. They give you a good sized portion and they’re just brown and crisp and gorgeous. Hot out of the fryer you bite into one and instant crunch and the greatness of the potato floods in your mouth. Plus they give you your own ketchup bottle so you can have as much as you please! Their milkshakes are the best ones I have ever had. It doesn’t compare to anyone else, fudds, Mickey D’s, chick-fil-A, 59. None. They used to make them with blue bell but I guess since the listeria incident they have stopped. The shakes are still great though, thick and sweet and creamy. It comes in a styrofoam cup with a straw and little spoon if you like eating like that. The small is 3.25 and large is 3.75, just get the large it’s like 1.5 the size of the small. I wish they were open later than 10, I could be making some great late night memories here! Service is ok, not outstanding but polite and reserved.

Southwell’s is the best — I went here for the first time last week and I can already tell you that anytime I have a stressful day and just want to eat my feelings through a good cheeseburger, I’m coming to Southwell’s. It started out as a simple family owned restaurant(not this location — I want to say the original was on Richmond?) but developed into a small-scale Houston chain. I love the little black and white photos on the walls splaying out the Southwell’s history — it enhances the mom-and-pop vibe, and the entire place just has a really nice authentic, dive-ish feel while also being clean and comfortable. I ordered a standard cheeseburger — plain and dry, because I’m exciting like that — with the regular French fries. It was seriously delicious, definitely a good go-to burger for anytime you’re craving some well-priced decadence. I didn’t order the sweet potato fries but I tried them and they were amazing(the regular fries were above average but not out of this world), so I’d recommend ordering those and your burger of choice. They also have a burger with onion rings and an optional fried egg on top, so I’m definitely trying that or the avocado burger next time now that I’ve established that the regular burger is so good. Also I’m not hugely into grilled cheese, but apparently theirs is the best so I may try that at some point, too. The service was a little slow, but I was also really hungry when I came so that may have contributed to the feeling of a long wait. But other than that, the people were friendly and even offered to bring us ketchup without us asking for it, which I thought was nice considering it’s an order-at-the-counter restaurant. All in all, Southwell’s is a great find. It’s pretty easy on your bank account(about $ 5 for the cheeseburger, $ 2.75 for fries) and you’re guaranteed a reliably delicious meal.

Spending the day in the museum district and ran across this place. Read some of the reviews on Unilocal and decided to give it a try! Not bad. Roomy inside. With nice booths and a bunch of family photos peppering the interior! Service was good and the food came fast! Reasonably priced the burgers were big and good! I’m full. If you’re in the mood for a burger and you’re near the Med Center this is a good choice!

After living right next to this place for a year, I finally gave in and decided to give it a try. It’s located in a strip mall of the busy intersection of Holcombe and Greenbriar, so it is pretty easy to pass along for other options. Although I’m not much of a fast food kinda guy, I had a pretty positive experience. I came in for lunch on a weekday, and the place was absolutely packed. There was such a diverse group of hungry clients — doctors, police officers, families — which made me feel at ease. The line was a bit long, and the orders to awhile, but they make all their meals to order, so it is worth it. I ordered the beer battered onion rings and the jalepeño burger, which were more than enough to eat. For about $ 10, you can walk away stuffed and without the feeling of wasting that on fast food. With pleasant service and decent burgers, I’ll be sure to stop by again when I’m in the mood for quality burgers.

I am a huge fan of Southwell’s burgers! Although it pains me to admit it, I tend to stop in for a burger here at least a couple times a week when I am in Houston, if not more. Located in a strip mall, the location isn’t anything too unique — but it sure is convenient(located by a CVS, SportsClips, phone repair shop and Specs across the street). The inside is always very clean and there are tables and booths inside and a couple tables outside as well. Once you walk in, you will see a variety of Texas memorabilia as well as some family pictures of the Southwell family. Even though you order from the counter, the service here is incredible and outstandingly friendly. When your food is ready, they will bring it out to you, make sure you have all of the condiments you need, and even refill your drink when it is empty — surprising for a place where you order at the counter… My favorite order here is the avocado burger, which is exactly what it sounds like — a single thin patty(just how I like it) with lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles, and of course, avocado. The bun is absolutely delicious and toasted to perfection. Standard, the burger comes with a light layering of mayo and mustard, although I have had friends that have added barbecue sauce or left off the mayo. The food is very fresh and you can definitely tell that it is. I also love their fresh-cut fries. They are tasty and definitely taste homemade. Sometimes they will come out a little bit soggy for my taste, so I just make sure to let them know that I like them well-done. I have also had the waffle friends and I am a big fan. My typical order(avocado burger, fresh cut friends, and an iced tea) comes out to $ 11.15. I know it down to the cent because I must have ordered it over a 100 times at this point. Sometimes the food does take a little while to come out, but it is always well worth the wait(And, it often gives me just enough time to pick up some needed items at CVS). If you happen to be in the area, I definitely recommend stopping in for a bite!

I love the burgers here, they are sooooo yummy. The fries are natural and fresh cut. If your in the mood for a great burger that is juicy, tasty and reasonably priced then this is the perfect spot. I love the freshness of the food because they cook it when you order it. Everything comes out hot and delicious. I’ve had many other places in the area and this is by far the best. It’s small inside and always clean and the staff is friendly. They have onion rings and frozen lemonade for those who want to try something unusual but the fries are the best. The patty size of the burger is perfect because I don’t like thick burgers and theirs is just the right size. When I’m near the medical center I always stop in here.

Location was next to the Hilton I was staying at on business. Place is very clean and Texas themed. I ordered the bacon cheese burger with a fried egg on top and waffle fries. The egg was cooked just right in which it was not runny but not over cooked. Bacon was crispy. The patty was cooked good but the overall size was on the small side which was a little disappointing. Waffle fries are ok. Overall it was a simple good burger better than a fast food burger. Price — $ 6 burger, $ 1egg, $ 2 fries, $ 2 drink = $ 13 out the door inc/tax

Quickly becoming my favorite place for burgers! I haven’t seen enough people talking about the music. Every song is an awesome old classic rock or pop song, mostly from the 60’s, and not the overplayed ones you’re sick of. Always hear at least one song by The Beatles while I’m there. Maybe it’s silly to care about the music at a burger restaurant, but it makes it more fun to eat there. The burgers themselves are good. Maybe even«very good.» Are they amazing? No, just very good, and consistently so. Better than fast food(even better than the decent fast food burger places down here that they lack up north where I’m from). The onion rings, on the other hand, are AMAZING. Best I’ve had in Houston so far! There are times I’ve considered going there just to get onion rings.

Sure. There’s better burgers in town if you want to go to a gourmet burger joint, or a dive that has famous burgers. But the burgers here are actually pretty good for the location, and better than fast food. This particular location is a cozy neighborhood spot that gets packed with regulars at lunch, and for that it serves it’s purpose. Southwells is a Houston based hamburger chain with 4 locations. Some pros: Decent prices 17 hamburger selections Clean Great service Some cons: Located in a busy strip center off a congested section of Holcombe Blvd Wait is a little longer than I expected Fries were bland and not worth $ 2.35
