My fiancée and I come here for some sushi every once in awhile. 1. It’s within walking distance 2. Sushi is priced very well(all day happy hour) 3. Volcano roll and Best roll is off the chain. Too bad they are changing management again here soon. So we shall see if the next review is any better or worse.

People complaining must be pretentious. Very good service, even with brand be server. Ok, sushi is not the best but nothing wrong with. It’s also very well priced. Cocktails are in par with places like blue fish sushi. Quiet ambient.

I’m a big sushi lover and i try tons of restaurants in Houston. We ordered a pad thai and regular rolls(salmon, yellowtail, phili) and 1 best roll. The rolls were pretty bad. Not fresh. Horrible ginger. Found a bone on top of that lol. We had to ask them to compensate for the bone & they took off 4.95 from the bill. Service was low. The water boy came by more sadly. So, bad food, service, & management. I’ve worked in the restaurant business long enough to say that. Hopefully we just came at a bad day.

Love the happy hour sushi price. Fresh nigiri and good quality sushi rolls. Papaya salad is good, love their miso soup. This is my family fave sushi stop, fresh and close to home.

They were having massive restroom issues the night we dined in, they should have closed for the evening instead of ruining any chance of a customer having any sort of good experience. I will not return.

This place is pretty average. The location is nice, it’s well decorated and big tables for large groups. The food is just OK for the most part … good value for money in terms of large portion sizes, but if you’re looking for high quality sushi, Aka or Kata nearby are both excellent.

Really good food and good atmosphere. The sushi is pretty good on a Saturday and the all day happy hour is very nice. Doesnt get really crowded even though its in a great location next to Trader Joe’s. I’ve been here a couple times and the service is always fantastic and the food always fresh and tasty. 4 stars only because although the sushi is good, I have had better.

Don’t order sushi because it is no good. I definitely wasn’t expecting the freshest, but this was below buffet par. The sashimi was warm, and by the color you could tell it was far from fresh. Even the cooked salmon tasted bad, like an old freezer. They have all day happy hour on rolls and a wide variety on their lunch menu. Place is empty so service is prompt and good for those who only get an hour break for lunch. Stick to bento boxes and you’ll be satisfied.

Love this place! It’s my go to place when wanting sushi. The service is good though there can be a language barrier at times. Yet the staff are extremely attentive. The food is amazing and tasty. There is a good variety of things on the menu. The happy hour menu is all day and has great items on it.

I kind of like this sushi place but it’s not in my tops list and I probably won’t be back unless I’m wanting sushi and it’s not normal happy hours times. It’s great they have all day happy hour but the place does smell funny. Their patio is pleasent. I sat at the 1st table because sometimes I like to be near my exit. But the table was not balanced and the chairs were wicker so some fat people had been in them before making the bottoms very deep. I kind of felt like I needed a booster chair. We had to rolls the rainbow and the best deal. The rainbow was horrible no taste at all but the best deal was great. The server needs some work. He was polite but when we were seated he should of 1st came over set our table up and asked if we wanted water to go with our sake.

The sushi platter I ordered was quite delicious and they have gluten free soy sauce. My husband had the hibachi steak and he loved it. Quiet, nice service, and fresh fish at an amazing price! I will be eating here more often when I am craving sushi.

Yesterday, due to time constraints for our original restaurant plan and being absolutely famished already, we came to Onaga, which I had been on my list of places to try for a while now. It became a happy bit of serendipity, because we thoroughly enjoyed all the items we ordered. They have a wider variety of Japanese beer than any other place I’ve been to in Houston. They also have Sapporo on draft! So, Japanese beer afficionados, hope this helps. They are also known for their all day happy hour, which made the big stack of fries and their other appetizers and basic sushi rolls pretty affordable. We ordered the Green Curry Chicken, the Sandwich Roll, the Best Roll and the Spicy Szechuan Fries. The fries, which were supposed to be the appetizer, came in last, which was odd, but upon seeing the large heap of potato strings, we realized that it was the most difficult to make. The Green Curry Chicken was our favorite. It was creamy and so tasty, you will want to just spread the sauce on rice and be content eating that for the rest of your days. The vegetables and chicken all blended perfectly with it. They gave us more rice upon our request. This also another important note, because, RICEISIMPORTANT y’all. The Sandwich Roll was very tasty. I wish that it was easier to consume, though, because each piece was cut to resemble a sandwich half, so it was difficult to pick up with chopsticks without having to split it into separate pieces. However, it was delicious enough for me to overlook this flaw. The Best Roll was also a good choice, with six large pieces and had ingredients that did not intersect with the Sandwich Roll, so we were able to taste various flavors for the entire dinner. The fries were interesting, because they were finely cut potato strings, with a good bit of sweetness and very mild spiciness. The crunchiness complemented the rest of our dishes and we delighted in eating them together with the sushi rolls. Our service was commendable, the décor here is beautiful, and in sum, it was a fantastic dinner experience.

Nice try Zake, but we all know you’re the same place with a new name. Went by to try out the new name and had a good enough experience. Interior is modern and chic. Every time I’ve ever been here, the place has been a ghost town. Service is good enough since it’s never busy. You can easily spot your server across the room and he’ll come running when you make eye contact. Everyone is very friendly and quick to make sure you’re having a good meal. They offer happy hour all day everyday, otherwise known as cheap sushi. Relying heavily on the happy hour discounts, Onaga offers all your favorite sushi, sashimi and rolls. If you’re looking for simple sushi pieces and sashimi at fairly good prices, this is your spot. If you’re more of a fan of the complicated or creative sushi dishes, this won’t be your favorite sushi restaurant.

Great food, awesome build out. Only thing is it took kind of a long time to get our food. Maybe I was just starving… the food is very fresh and very good.

Yikes, this place was really empty on the Saturday morning that we dropped in. They advertised an all day happy hour so we grabbed a few bites off the menu. The calamari and gyoza seemed like they were frozen and not fresh(the gyoza seemed suspiciously similar to Trader Joe’s gyoza). However, at less than 4 dollars an app, I can’t complain as everything tasted fine. I got my entrée and it was OK. I thought my terriyaki chicken was a bit overcooked, but the great service kind of made up for it. In the end, I kind of felt sorry for Onaga. They have such a nice restaurant, but it’s so empty. Maybe it’s worth giving it a shot, the food definitely smells good when you’re shopping at Trader Joe’s. I’m chalking off my experience to a bad day for them.

Nicely decorated restaurant bar with great happy hour sushi. Decorated in what I would consider a modern style, it was comfortable and cozy for my small party. The service was fantastic and our waitress was extremely friendly and charming. It’s definitely worth stopping by. The happy hour prices were decent and the drink offers were great(and tasted awesome). I was surprised it was not busy for dinner service on Sunday which was fine because we were seated right away. There wasn’t anything especially creative about the sushi but the common items were done very well. We ended up getting a second round of food which was delivered promptly. Definitely recommend.

I went there on a Saturday night, because we were in the area. There were not a lot of people there, but I think its because it still shows up as Zake on google maps and all the bad reviews that go with that. As an FYI they are doing happy hour all day everyday right now. So we ordered the spicy edamame which is also roasted, and it was very good. Also ordered the calamari which was also very good and would recommend. We ordered some salmon and peppered Tuna sushi pieces which were very fresh. I was actually surprised with the peppered tuna because its usually very dry when I order it at other places but not here. We also ordered the orange dragon and the rainbow roll which were both very good, but I would probably recommend the orange dragon more. Overall I think the food is great here, the service was good, but like I said there weren’t a lot of people so that shouldn’t have been an issue. Hopefully they get their advertisement taken care of so people know they exist, because its definitely worth trying.

I went here last Saturday night for dinner. We wanted Sushi, and after wating too long at a place down the street, decided to give this place a try instead because of the pricing and all day happy hour specials. First thing we noticed was they’re still using Zake’s chopsticks. It was empty. This was 9pm on a Saturday night, so that should have been a bad sign. Our server was not very attentive, and often someone else would bring us a round of drinks saying our server was«busy»… doing what? There were like 2 other tables in the entire place! Our meal didn’t wrap up till 11:30ish, not because we were eating leisurely, but just due to slow service throughout the meal, and us having to flag the guy down for the check. The food itself was decent enough for sushi in Texas– I still haven’t been wowed by a sushi restaurant here. The sake bombs were cheap, and if we could have gotten them faster probably would have ordered a few more. This place has a great location and great décor, but needs to step it up if it wants to avoid the prior tenant’s fate.

I went through love/hate times with Zake over the years. Onaga has my appreciation. Right now the happy hour menu is on full time, bonus. The fish is fresh and service is super attentive — probably because it is so empty. We had salmon, peppered tuna and yellowtail nigiri which were good cuts and tasty. The spicy edamame has just the right dusting of salt and heat with the spicy chili oil. The ocean crunch roll(cut thin) was delicious and only $ 5.50(see pic). These sushi chefs know what they are doing. I can’t wait to go back! If you are like me and not a fan of Zake, please give Onaga a try.
