I would not recommend only because I ordered food and it had some tiny little bugs in the rice. They did offer to replace the meal but why would i want another plate if the one I just received had bugs.

Came here at Tuesday noon. Pretty empty. Can order Lo Bo Gao if you call 1 day in advance. Food here is better than average. Mom really liked it because everything seemed home made. food came out quickly. Food is made to order. Some very outstanding dishes: Siao Mai(pork) Taro root with meat sesame bun(very fresh!) other dishes we tried: chinese broccoli fried dumplings pork buns(mom says breading was home-made) rice wrapped in banana? leaf siao mai(shrimp) crab claw with shrimp disappointing dishes: vegetable dumplings from appetizer menu

This place has excellent food! We came for the dim sum and it was delicious. The only downside to this place was that it sold out of many of the dishes. Probably because they were that good. Wonder why more people haven’t found this gem of a restaurant yet. And I’m usually quite critical of Cantonese food and being asian, always looking for the real thing.

WARNING!!! Dim sum is only available *after* 2PM. At first when I arrived at a bit after noon, a very nice Caucasian fellow said he thought I could get served dim sum, then a young Asian woman said no I couldn’t(so I ordered from the lunch menu) then an older Asian woman said that since it was my first visit she’d do me a favor and let me order Dim Sum, but, of course, I already had something ordered… The menu is only in English and Chinese characters. One of my favorite dishes is called«Chow Fun» — it’s a noodle dish. When I asked the young woman if they had it, she just brought me a menu but since I don’t read Chinese I had to ask again if a particular dish was called Chow fun. It is and it was very good, but the whole ordering process left me feeling as if they really didn’t quite know what they were doing. I did get a dish from the Dim sum menu(sesame balls with red bean filling) for dessert. They were good but not extraordinary. If I find myself hungry after 2, I may give them another try since they are closer than Bellaire, but I won’t make a special trip. Added 10/31/2011 Got a very nice note from the owner. She actually read this review and tells me that now Dim Sum is available all day. I’ll try to head down this week and check it out.

This place gets pretty busy during the week since it’s in downtown near the courthouses. However, the food is delicious enough to be patient to get your food. It’s not your typical Americanized Chinese food where it’s super greasy and unhealthy but more authentic and actually very addicting. You will see a lot of regulars, and some who travel from the other side of town just for Mr. Wong’s cooking. I hear they will be launching a dim sum menu pretty soon, and that’s exciting. Right now, the only place to get that is in Bellaire. The owners of this place used to have a dim sum restaurant in the north side of Houston and did quite well. In short, I think anything that Mr. Wong cooks, will not let you down. Oh yes, don’t forget to try the more authentic dishes on their menu if you get tired of the lunch menu. It’s really really good!

Place is pretty dead on a Saturday afternoon, but then again, it is in downtown so I’m sure it gets pretty busy during the week. Cute little place. We ordered steamed pork dumplings, orange beef, and walnut shrimp. I enjoyed the dumplings, it was small, but I liked the dough’s texture… a little thick. Orange beef, I’ve had a lot better. I felt like they sliced it too thin, then fried it for too long, which made the meat too chewy. The sauce wasn’t that great either. Walnut shrimp or prawns rather, it would have been excellent had they not drenched so much mayo on top. I enjoy it when it’s lightly drizzled and tossed evenly. This one it looke like they just squirted it on top.

I ordered Mongolian beef and it was delicious! for $ 9 it came with handmade eggrolls that were different in a tasty way. The best part was the owner/chef used to be a history teacher in China so she was educating us while we waited for our food. This lady is passion. Worth your patronage. Best chinese downtown hands down.

Ugh… I walked in and sat at the table. It was warm inside. I asked the waitress if they used MSG and she said no. All of a sudden there was yelling from the back and she came back out. The restaurant uses MSG in everything. I walked out; MSG should never have to be added as a flavor enhancer. It is so bad for your body.

Lunch was pretty good. Quiet environment, good food, attentive waitstaff. Nothing about it really stood out to me as particularly good or bad. I will most likely eat here again if I am on that side of downtown, but I am not sure I will make special trips that way for anything except good company. So three stars because nothing about it really popped out at me. It is a solid«A-OK»

Hong Kong Diner is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Downtown Houston. And it’s the only place you can get Chinese food downtown(that I know of) past the 9 – 5 business hours of the nearby offices. The food is good and tastes more fresh and healthy than your average chinese place. The people who run the restaurant are also incredibly friendly. A few times I have eaten there at night(8:30 pm) on a weekday and we were the only ones there. I felt bad for them but the lady told me it’s very busy during the day. I would definitely recommend this place. If you live near the Metro Rail, you can even go out to dinner without having to drive your car!
