Absolutely favorite brunch spot in Houston, just tried to check it out after a month of being in Austin and it is shut down ! Super super sad, this place was always packed when we went, friendly staff and AMAZINGFOOD ! I am so so sad to see this place go /: it will be missed. But we will definitely be checking out their new NOLA location !

I came for brunch this past weekend with my boyfriend since we just moved into the area. It was busy and we were fine waiting to be seated in about 30 – 45 minutes. I believe they were short staffed because our waitress couldn’t get to all her tables in a timely manner. The food took longer than expected to come out. My boyfriend ordered the creole omelette and I had the Verde salad. It took over an hour for the food to come out so I figured they were backed up. I ordered the devil on the bayou and that came out rather quickly. My salad had a lot of wilted pieces and they left out my chicken(I strictly ordered this salad because the description had chicken.) When I asked the waitress her response was, «Oh let me check, I don’t think it comes with chicken.» It turned out they left the chicken out? We were kind of over it so we just ate and left. Maybe in the future I’ll come try it again and update the review.

This place is small, but cute. It’s a very intimate & simple place. Awesome bar and good menu with a nice variety for brunch. The only thing is that the wait is long if you don’t get there early. I’m here in Sunday at noon and the wait is 45mins to 1 hour for an inside table. We got lucky and found 2 seats at the bar. Service was extremely SLOW! Even though we were sitting at the bar, we had to ask for refills and we waited over an hour for our food. After 30mins of waiting for our food I had to ask the waitress to check on it; she came back and said«they will be working on it shortly» RIDICULOUS! We ordered stuffed french toast and an omelet which are fast to make. The food wasn’t even hot when it came out and the omelet was burnt. I was disappointed that no one apologized for the delay nor did they offer a discount smh. Upon getting home and checking my e-receipt, I realized I was overcharged! The bartender charged me for 3 drinks when I only ordered 2. This is unacceptable especially when I was sitting at the bar! secondly I realized I was charged $ 7.50 for a side of bacon & eggs that were overcooked. That’s ridiculous too. Since I wasn’t presented with an actual receipt for my purchase before I was asked to pay(they use Square and the Ipad for payment here, which means you only see the total and the receipt is emailed to you). I should have known better to sign anything before seeing the itemized receipt, but I was in a hurry after having waited over an over an hour for food. I won’t be going back to this place. smh very disappointing

What a terrible experience. It was a Friday afternoon and my girlfriends wanted to try out this place. I’d never heard of it, so we went. First impression– easy parking, nobody but one other couple in the place so that was nice. I arrived there first. I noticed a small piece of paper on my table stating that in order to split checks we would have to let the server know prior to ordering. Okay no problem– I went ahead and let the server know that we would be splitting up the check. My friend ordered a custom bloody mary(that’s the rave about this place right?) She circled about 7 things… It came back with a celery stick, one olive and a pickle. Yes, remember how I just said 7 things? It came back with 3 of the things ordered. Oh well… moving on. I had the crab and sweet pepper scrambler. It was blaaaannnnnnd. Literally I couldn’t tell what was egg and what was crab. Super disappointing. One of my friends started with the beignets. She had never had beignets before and I made her swear she wouldn’t base her opinion of them on what brick and spoon had to offer. They weren’t awful tasting, but they were donuts, not beignets. Let’s not try to call that dense heavy cakey thing a beignet please. She went on to order the chicken florentine benedict. I didn’t taste hers, but she also stated it was bland… Back to my friend who had the bloody mary— After trying to gulp down a few sips, she couldn’t do it anymore. Granted she hadn’t had many bloody mary experiences, but I’ve had a few and after trying it, it was definitely missing ingredients. She left it barely touched at the end of the table. She ordered the killer creole omelet. It was so tough you could barely cut the thing. And this is supposed to be eggs people, eggs… We all had sides of the roasted corn grits– this was the most tolerable thing we had, but seriously… it’s grits. And they were seriously lacking salt at that. The server came to check on us finally and my bloody mary friend asked for the drink to be taken off her check since it was not what she had ordered and it did not taste good at all. She returned with her manager who kept saying things like«You don’t’ like this? Have you ever had a bloody mary before? … and you don’t like this one?» … HORRID uncomfortableness. He refused to take it off her ticket. So we couldn’t wait to get out of there— Our check came on ONE ticket. I told the server(different than the one who originally sat me) that I had asked the other server to split the check. She said okay and came back with the SAME one ticket with just my two items circled. My total was $ 19.50. Okay, so I had cash… I handed that to her. My other two friends still were not separated… When asked, the server said she would need to get her manager. The manager came out and basically told them he can’t separate the check. I told him that they had literally just separated mine a few minutes earlier and he stated that only because I had requested to be separated prior to ordering did that happen. Okay wait a minute… what? This is ridiculous. Both of my friends took a pen and circled their items… Should be easy enough, they just did that with my order… NOPE The manager left and the server came back with the ticket split right down the middle(not separated by what each girl ordered) Such TERRIBLE customer service. We will never be back and for the rest of the day kept talking about how we should make it our life mission to ensure people don’t waste their money at this restaurant— extreme I know. But this is my review after 4 days– The managers attitude was horrid. He should have just wore a sign that said«I don’t give a crap» I really don’t see this place lasting… and that’s fine with me because I won’t be back.

Arrived in houston on father’s day without my father and wanted brunch with my friends. Was craving a bloody mary so searched best bloody mary brunch. I got super excited and we drive 25 minutes and called ahead for an hour and half wait. The first 2 times I called, no one answered. Finally someone picked up. We got there at 1 pm and was seated at 2. We took advantage of walking up to the bar and ordering our own bloody Mary’s and a mango mimosa. We started to fill out the bloody mary form and the bartender said not to cause he’s gonna be out of some of the toppings. He finally got to us after finishing up with 3 orders and didn’t ask what we wanted. Just asked if we are allergic to anything. I told him very light on alcohol and to give my friend the rest but he put a lot of vodka in which most people would like. He picked bacon and shrimp and a pickled carrot. He did ask if we wanted it spicy. I had to then ask for the pickled onion which I didn’t get and pickled okra. I just expected more for 48 $ with tip. We weren’t even given napkins or a straw. We went to the hostess to ask how long and originally there were 6 people ahead of us and she now said 5 were ahead after 30 minutes. They offered to seat us outside but it was like 100 degrees. Finally got seated and the food was all right but really not anything to write home about. Steak and eggs with grits. Crab cake Benny with hollandaise and a fancy omelet. We ate fast and left. Definitely a little disappointed with the overall service and experience. It’s a small quaint place with cute decorations. A place to go if you live around the area every now and then but I wouldn’t go back for special occasions. #disappointed

We just had a good brunch, however the service was extremely slow and the manager’s attitude was not acceptable. After placing our order, it took about 45 minutes to receive our food. After we ate, our waiter didn’t come back around for another 30 minutes. In the meantime we saw 2 tables next to us pick up and leave. One couple had placed an order and never received it, and the other had received one dish, but the other person in the party never received hers. We hadn’t seen our waiter for some time so I went up to the hostess who was walking around and asked if we could get our check. The bartender/manager on duty came up behind me and rudely said(with an attitude) «your waiter will bring the check, not the hostess,» and walked off. We never complained, and had it not been for the manager, we would likely come back. Sometimes things get busy, but this manager’s attitude was not acceptable.

Took advantage of being out and about early on a Saturday morning and decided to come for breakfast. Parking across the street on a gravel lot. Plenty of available tables at 9:30am. Started off with the build your own Bloody Mary. No need to order an app, one is pretty filling. Mine was missing the blue cheese stuffed olive but got one once I was able to flag down our waitress. She managed to zip past me about 5 times before I could get her but determination is key! This drink helps if you’re hungry since it does take awhile for the food to come out. Ordered the chicken florentine as an entrée. Perfectly poached eggs with black pepper cracked on top. Some pieces of chicken were dry but the hollandaise helped a lot. Comes with a side of corn grits and mixed fruit. Overall good dish. Service was a little slow but I didn’t mind it. Drink up! FYI: they no longer have the 3 for 1 mimosas, on Saturday and Sunday’s from 8−10am, even though it’s still on the menu.

I was really anticipating for this place to be amazing but I honestly thought otherwise. We came here on a Sunday around 10:30am and there was no wait. We were ecstatic about that. The crowd started picking up around 11am so make sure you come before 11am if you want to avoid waiting. Also, there isn’t really a waiting area so majority of folks are stuck waiting outside. We were immediately seated and our waiter asked us twice if we wanted anything to drink besides water. I felt like he wanted it for the tips… I wasn’t gonna fall for it especially since nothing on the drink menu appealed to me. I know that their Bloody Mary’s are popular but my boyfriend and I are not fans of that drink anyway. I ordered the Breakfast Tacos. Let me first say that I was under the impression that my order was going to come with three tacos(mine only came with two). Also, two fellow Unilocalers posted the same dish but theirs looks completely different(and better) than mine. The dish comes with home-made chips which are not that great. They’re cold, salty, and overly crunchy. The tacos weren’t that great either. I’d rather eat Jack-in-the-Box tacos instead. My boyfriend ordered the Soft Shell Crab BLT which is a whopping 18 bucks. He thought it was too expensive and not worth the price. His dish came with the home-made chips as well. The food was just a complete disappointment and costed us around $ 28. We don’t mind paying top notch money for top notch food. Since the food did not meet our expectations, we were not happy to drop down that amount of money. My boyfriend and I actually woke up early to make the drive down here to enjoy a nice brunch for our anniversary. Overall, we were not impressed with this place and we will not be returning anytime soon.

Always wanted to try this place and when my girlfriends were in town, we finally were able to! We got a lot of food & I was extremely impressed with it all. The wait was kind of long. Which stinks. But the food was good so it made up for it! Build your own Bloody Mary’s were awesome! I couldn’t drink it all cause it was so much! As a table we got shrimp & grits, crab & sweet pepper scrambler, chicken florentine & stuffed French toast sliders! My favorite would be the stuffed French Toast Sliders & the Chicken Florentine! I love eggs Benedict. Can’t go wrong!

Brick & Spoon is a cute little house converted into a restaurant on W. Alabama in the Montrose neighborhood. My husband and I primarily checked this place out b/c we looove Bloody Mary’s! First of all, the parking lot for this restaurant is across the street and always has spots. NO Valet(I HATE Houston valet) and tons of FREE spots you can park at. Table wait: This place DOESNOT take reservations. Once you arrive there you give the host your cell phone number and they text you once your table is ready. Great for me b/c we live only a few blocks away and can walk back once our table is ready. But for most, the wait is minimum 45 minutes on a busy Saturday/Sunday brunch time(between 12pm-2pm). Drinks: — Bloody Mary’s: The Bloody Mary’s are made to order and they’re huge!!! I’m full after one drink! I love that you can customize your own Bloody Mary to the way you want it! I definitely recommend this place for all Bloody Mary lovers! — Mimosa Trio: This is a flight of mimosas you can try so you can experience all they have to offer. Definitely recommend! Food: — Deviled on the Bayou: GREAT starter! I loove deviled eggs! They are delicious here! The Fried Oysters are a bonus and really make the dish filling! The Srirachi Aioli completes it! I would definitely recommend this dish to share! If I had eaten this all on my own I would definitely be stuffed. — Chicken Florentine: Soooo delicious! The poached eggs and hollandaise sauce are amazing!!! The chicken is tender and flavored just right for this dish! I got this dish with the fire roasted corn grits on the side and it was absolutely amazing– not too sweet and not too salty– just perfect! Service: — Sometimes my husband and I are willing to wait at the bar while we wait for our table. Most times we order our Brunch cocktails at the bar while we wait but Service is Slooooow! I understand our Bloody Mary’s are made to order but it seriously shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes to make 2 Bloody Mary’s with basically the same ingredients… just sayin’… Waitstaff: — SLOOWWWW! Takes about 15 minutes before tables are cleared by guests who have left(no wonder why there’s such a long table wait). — Takes forever to get your food ordered so be prepared. Check out the menu while you wait so you can order ASAP once you’re seated — Once your food gets there, I also recommend asking for the check since that takes about 30 minutes to arrive. NO Joke! Service is awful here. Overall, the food and drinks are great but for the service, I would not recommend this place to anyone unless they had all the time in the world to waste.

I came here for brunch and received decent service. Nothing to complain about really. We came with a pretty large party with kids and our server managed really well. The food here is lacking. I tried the po boy benedict and was not impressed. The bread was hard and the grits it came with just didn’t do it for me. I also tried the crab cake benedict and thought it was mediocre. The kids mac and cheese was probably my favorite thing to try here. I also had the berry mimosa which was pretty good. Overall, I don”t think I would come back or recommend this place to anyone.

We have chosen Brick and Spoon for brunch several times and have never been disappointed. Recently we went right after our early service at church and it was not packed at all — plus they have 3 for 1 mimosas until 10, which is a huge plus for us. The mimosas were decent and not 99% champagne like other places that will offer something similar. I had the killer creole omelet, which was fantastic. The corn grits really make everything pop! My spouse had the Caribbean Scramble and he love it also. The service is great — not rushed and the food is good. This is a solid brunch bet if you need something in Montrose.

so disappointing. I was expecting so much after hearing how amazing this place was and the constant 1 – 2 hour wait times… on and on. luckily, I was able to snag a walk in table. Get up early people…8:30 on a weekend. service is mediocre at best. food is decent. had omelette x 2. nothing notable. grits are really good. coffee is horrible. bananas foster wraps were ok. Bloody mary was the best part. Very casual home converted into a restaurant kind of place. big parking lot across the street. good luck calling ahead to see if there is a wait, their phone number is connected to a fax machine. I have absolutely NO interest in coming back here. I cant even imagine how annoyed I would be if I waited an hour to eat here. if you can just walk in no wait… sure try it out, especially if the weather is nice and they have open patio seats.

Saturdays are packed, so we got a seat at the bar and made our mornings a little more cultured and colorful with Irish coffee. The bartender is a character and talked to us about aliens, the Mayans, and his grandmother while letting us sample pickled okra. Not the potential Instagram worthy coffee date we expected, but for two former Austinites, we’ll cheerfully add this experience to the list of «Ok, so THAT just happened» The whiskey helped.

Brunch was tasty, but not exceptional. It’s hard to compete when there are tons of other brunch spots in Houston with excellent food. With that said, B&S has a nice café-style atmosphere and build-your-own Bloody Mary’s the size of your head! A girlfriend and I came here for our annual winter rendezvous. Seeing as how it was annual, we had lots to catch up on. Our waiter was extremely patient as we slowly ordered coffee, then Bloody Mary, and then finally our food after an hour of sitting down. We ended up sharing the killer creole omelette and the soft shell crab benedict. I’ve gotta say, I’ve had better benedict elsewhere. Both plates felt a bit empty, especially the benedict. Benedicts in my mind are overflowing with egg and hollandaise, but this one has two of the smallest poached eggs in the world(probably the size of ping pong balls). The build-your-own Bloody Mary is pretty neat. I’m not a huge Bloody Mary drinker, so I couldn’t tell you if it was good or bad. The concept is really cool though. You get to pick every aspect of your Bloody Mary — type of vodka, veggies(pickled and not), meat and cheese(who knew this was a topping…), eggs(whatttt?), temperature(how spicy), herbs and seasoning, rimmer(none, salt, pepper). I enjoyed the one we made, but again, Bloody Mary’s are not my brunch drink of choice. B&S wasn’t too packed when we came on a Friday, so we didn’t feel too guilty spending almost 3 hours there chatting up a storm(you know how girls are). There’s a private lot right across the street from B&S and I completely missed it. I ended up parking on the street nearby and noticed the«parking lot» arrow as I was walking from my car. Oops! They should make the sign a tad bit bigger and placed in a position where drivers can see before they have already passed it up and have to make the dreaded u-turn on the narrow streets of Montrose.

We came around 1230pm on a beautiful Saturday morning. The estimated weight was ~35 minutes but it turned out to be 20. They have a cool text message thing where you can check where your position is in line which is convenient. We ordered immediately but the food still took freaking almost 40 minutes to come out. They were out of the breakfast tacos, bananas in pajamas, and the stuffed beignets. We ordered the american breakfast, the chicken florentine Benedict, and the Unilocal-recommended stuffed french toast sliders. The chicken florentine Benedict was okay. The eggs were poached beautifully but the chicken was very dry. The stuffed french toast sliders were pretty good but not amazing. The American breakfast was run of the mill. All in all, not worth the wait. Won’t be returning.

I usually come here for brunch and for social reasons, and when I say brunch I honestly just mean an early afternoon drink lol. It gets pretty busy on the weekends, so the wait is long. Weekdays, not so much. Nice deco, and table settings. I love their bloody Mary menu, which is customizable. You are able to choose from what liquor you want in your bloody Mary, to veggies, meat, cheeses and even add a deviled egg or shrimp on yours. My favorite thing on their menu! This is pretty much the only reason I come to Brick & Spoon, since my usual favorite brunch restaurant got bought out by a developer.(Saint Genevieve’s) Their mimosas are a bit lacking in my opinion. Other than that, their food is okay. Presentation is always beautiful but when it comes to taste there is not much to say. It’s nothing out of the ordinary, just your usual eggs benedict/french toast and a few other choices with a slight Cajun/Creole twist. My last visit I got their shrimp & tasso mac & cheese, Deviled on the Bayou(seafood deviled eggs with fried oysters) and of course a bloody mary. Bloody Mary was great as always, wish it was a little spicy but I’ll just remind the waiter my next visit I want it extremely spicy. First time having their shrimp & tasso mac & cheese, it was pretty good but nothing special. For those who have never tasso, it’s pretty much Louisiana cured pork similar to bacon. Shrimp & tasso is their creole take on Mac & cheese, but I felt like something was missing to bring the flavors together. It wasn’t bad, but not a dish that would stand out either. Deviled on the Bayou was okay, it just tasted like fried oysters over a deviled egg. Which is exactly what it was. Overall their dishes are a bit lacking a little something to make them stand out, but have great potential if the chef is willing to make a few changes. Other than that, the service is great. My waiter was attentive and polite. The food took a while, but that has nothing to do with the waiter but the kitchen itself. Will be back for another bloody Mary. Food? Not so much. I would give this place 3& a half stars but I am unable to. So to be nice I’m going to give a rating of 4 stars. I just hope there will be some changes going on in the kitchen, it’s disappointing to have a nice place have such subpar food.

Came here earlier today with a group of friends around 1. 30 – 45 minute wait. Figured since we were already here we might as well stay. The restaurant itself is pretty small, so you can image the waiting area. Before we get into the nitty gritty, I will say that the parking isn’t half bad. Decent sized pebbled lot across the street. Now let’s proceed to what was right about B&S. The Deviled on the Bayou appetizer. The oysters were fried in cornmeal, and served atop a perfect aioli. Spicy, creamy, and a perfect compliment to the oysters. That’s it. The food was mediocre, I had the Farmer’s Market Benedict, which is just a regular eggs benedict with seasonal veggies(squash, zucchini, asparagus) laid atop the english muffin. Tried the mimosa flight, and it was just ehh… not really flavorful, or memorable. You could probably make a better mimosa at home to be honest. Didn’t try the bloody mary, but you are able to customize it, which is pretty neat. Now the bad. Service. I completely understand when you’re a bit swamped and things fall by the wayside, but honestly, if you’re going to take a larger order, write it down. It’s really that simple. Had the waitress come back a good 7 – 10 minutes after we’d ordered to ask my friend and I what we ordered, «to confirm.» Okay. Side dishes got mixed around on the orders, another reason you write orders down. Small issue, but still annoying. We waited and waited for the last dish to be served before digging in, with assurances from the waitress that«it’ll be out in a few minutes.» Well. a «few minutes» pass, after waiting from for a good while, the waitress sends the hostess to tell us that her meal cannot be completed as they’d run out of spinach. Wait? What? Didn’t the waitress JUST tell us a few more minutes on the last order? Indeed. So much oversight here. The food was fine, nothing extremely special, that couldn’t be had at any other brunch place. The poached egg was done right, hollandaise was good. Friend was unhappy so they offered to change her order for something else. She ordered a panini, and it took forever to come out. By then we’d already made her a little plate, and we’re ready for the check. Box it up. The waitress couldn’t even split the bill correctly. Friend was supposed to be given the discount for the kitchen snafu, but it wound up on my bill after we had told her to split the bill and gave her the cards. Perhaps we just got a really bad waitress, she was just terrible, and maybe the restaurant itself is undeserving of a 2 star rating. All I know is my friends and I will never come back to test the waters here again.

Just had lunch here today. ‘Twas pretty tasty. Shared the apple and Baked Brie Bruschetta and the Bacon Cali Burger with quinoa salad with my lunch date. We asked for the burger well done and it was very toasted and yummy. I was very pleased with how they nicely split our sandwich and side for us. Good customer service! I previously tried to go here on a Sunday for brunch, but voluntarily turned away after finding the wait would be at least an hour and a half. Which I can understand because the place is kind of small. However, at 1 pm on a Wednesday, there was no wait. The service and food were both good. I don’t really like that you have to walk across Alabama to get to the parking lot, but I guess it could be worse(like if they didn’t have a parking lot). I’d like to come here again to try the beignets and breakfast food, but I’m not sure if I’d be willing to wait more than like 30 minutes for a table.

I love it when a house is turned into a restaurant and Brick and Spoon is no exception. It is quaint inside with hardwood floors and plenty of parking directly across the street. We got there and was told it would be an hour and a half wait so we got a couple of drinks to kill some time — margarita on the rocks which my husband said was one of the best he’s ever had, and I had the pineapple infused mimosa. We scored a table in 30 minutes which was less time than expected. Now do expect it to be loud if you are seated in the room to the left of the bar. It’s a small room so the tables are pretty close to one another. Be ready to be impressed by the food! They have a huge selection to choose from. We ordered the Baked Brie Bruschetta which was toe-curling good! For my entrée I chose the Chicken Florentine Benny with a side of Pasta Salad which is a MUSTHAVE! We were trying to figure out the flavors in the salad to recreate it at home. We were told it has a chimichurri sauce mixed in it. The chicken could have used a pinch of salt to give it a little more oomph. My better half chose the Shrimp Tasso Mac n Cheese which was a huge portion, and he wiped the plate clean! I wish I liked Bloody Mary’s because apparently that’s what they are known for. Every other person had one in their hand. Maybe next time I will give it a try!
