Best Fresh replaces the old Diho Supermarket that I fondly remember going to every weekend as a child *pour of sip of beer for the homies who didn’t make it*. I came the day after Chinese New Years on a freezing cold day. Not sure if the freeze affected the supply or if it was depleted from CNY, but 75% of their produce bins were empty. The layout is completely changed, but doesn’t hide the fact that it is still small. Also, it was colder inside than it was outside, meaning it was lower than 30 degrees… WHUT? My fingers were frozen beyond recognition by the time I left. Worthy effort to remodel and refresh this old spot, but they can’t beat the newer and larger supermarkets.

I have visited every supermarket in chinatown many times, so I am familiar with the old diho supermarket that it replaced. I admit I came here with very low expectations but was surprised when I went in. I really like the layout, from the meats and seafood to the fruits and veggies. Everything was super fresh and clean(trust me that is saying a lot for some of the other supermarkets in chinatown). Also I enjoyed walking up and down the snack and spice/seasoning aisles. While this is not as big as some of the other supermarkets such as Hong Kong, Viet Hoa or Golden, it does have a majority of the things that one would need. Also their prices is on par with their competitors, which is a good thing because the prices in chinatown are usually a lot cheaper than places like HEB, Kroger, Randalls, etc. I am hoping that this place keeps running like they current are, I have seen a lot of new supermarkets start off strong, but after a year or two they go downhill.

Well I might be biased cause I just got a big pile of veggies from the manager(cut off pieces of bok choy that weren’t sellable but plenty fine for rabbits). But it looks like there is a nice shiny supermarket replacing the old grungy one that used to be there. While I really can’t say it is particularly remarkable, it is clean and the manager was very nice(of course). If you’re in the center definitely drop in, if nothing else, their produce looks super fresh and its an interesting layout(you see the veggies right up front by the doors, and the other stuff is off to the side). And yes, they know the h-town market well enough to have our favorite evergreen yogurt right off the bat =)
