Tempura Ichidai

Had dinner here Friday night, after learning about the soft opening earlier in the week. Got there around 5:10pm (party of 3) and we were seated right away by friendly server. But by the time we finished dinner (~ 6:30pm), there was a fairly long line, so you may want to head over early, if at all possible.
Menu is self-​explanatory — the restaurant showcases different types of tempura, so your choices are different types of tempura.
Started off with kale tempura appetizer — winners! Not a big fan of kale, but my family and I definitely enjoyed this. Light and not too oily, good way to enjoy tempura and get some greens as well. Then the miso soup and tsukemono type stuff were delivered to us. We’ve eaten a fair number of miso soup at different Japanese restaurants and I have to say this is one of the best. Very rich and flavorful, not at all watered down like some places.
Our dinner choices were: chicken tendon, chicken tempura set, and Ichidai set. We very much enjoyed the different types of tempura that came with our choices, particularly my Ichidai set. My daughter’s chicken tendon arrived with a heap of tempura on top of the rice. The various tempuras with the other two tempura sets were delivered to us as each was freshly made, ensuring that each was as good as can be. As some on the mobile app have complained about, this is a fast-​paced meal, so you should plan accordingly.
Our dinner was topped off with the restaurant’s signature dessert… black sugar azuki bean paste wrapped in thin slices of bread. Sadly, I can’t tell you how this was cuz my daughter grabbed my slice before I even knew what hit me.
Service was good, but got a bit stretched as more people arrived. The décor was light and airy, and nicely decorated. Dinner for 3 of us came out to $ 56 — about the same or less as when we go to Gyotaku or Shokudo. But we were very satisfied at the end of dinner, so 3 happy campers!

Our first visit to this new establishment. It’s on the 3^rd floor of the Ewa Wing. Head towards the lot from the mall and take a left.
Nicely appointed and decorated. We were seated quickly and ordered similar meals. Jumbo shrimp/​shrimp. Hot tea and a Coke. The drink vessels are small.
The food comes in a timely manner and hot. So I had my shrimp (heads included! Yay!) and one tempura vegetable before my last set of vegetables.
My husband had his come in a bowl. I think I got the better by getting jumbo.
Our miso was flavorful/​rich.
Everything tasted fresh and good. Service was friendly but not cloying so.
We’ll definitely be back. The food wasn’t made in front of us, but maybe it was due to our seating? It is, however, made to order.
