After some shopping at the Ala Moana Shopping Center, we headed over to the Shirokiya department store’s large food court on the top floor. Options include udon, ramen, donburis, and bento boxes. After checking out the choices, I opted for a bowl of tempura udon at Shichifuku. After placing the order, the service is pretty quick and my order was up. The udon is serviced in a ceramic bowl and my tempura is served in a plastic container. After you finish your udon, return the bowl back to Shichifuku. It is ceramic after all. Overall, the udon was good and tempura was crispy. Not bad for a food court.

If you don’t feel like heading to Iyo Udon on the other side of the mall, Shichifuku is the same thing — you can get a cheap bowl of hot soba or hot udon($ 5.50) and there’s a very small tempura«buffet» with a few key items such as kabocha, shrimp, sweet potato, vegetable bomb, and green beans. The udon was good, nice and chewy, and the broth was good. The tempura were adequate. The only thing that would prevent me from going back was the service! I don’t expect much from a mall kiosk but this lady was as dour as can be. No smile at all. She was just like, get your food and get out of my sight.

This place is very reasonable and tempura special is 1.25 and it cannot go wrong. This is one of best places I have eaten. .I am glad that the prices are very good and I am a huge fan of buckwheat noodles(soba) and I really like the fact that it is a good place to eat and hang out too… I hope people will stop by and see what they have to offer. Happy eating

I’ve eaten here many times but I never knew what the name was until now. This udon/soba shop is located inside Shirokiya. They have tempuras you can buy as side dishes on the left side of the counter. I’ve only gotten their wakame udon. The service is pretty quick and they make it pretty quick too. They serve the udon in a real ceramic bowl. So after you’re done you have to return the bowl and tray on the right side of the counter. I appreciate places that serve food in real bowls because it’s so much more healthier choice than Styrofoam or paper goods. I can’t comment on how clean the bowl is however. This place is self serve so don’t expect service. You can also fetch your own water near the beer bar. As for the taste, udon is descent along with the soup base. It’s not super salty.

I agree with my friend, Vince B.‘s assessment of this Udon shop with a longass name… It’s busy, busy, busy but the servers are still very efficient. Good Tempura, Cheap Udon and Soba. Good place for a quick bite. Just some FYI, it gets busy here by association… Many at the Beer Garden will automatically come here for the tempura! I mean it’s on the right-side of the Yataimura Beer Garden bar, right? Most people are righties and psychologically lean right. Yup, that’s it! It gets busy by «the domino effect». Props to MY Yataimura Beer Garden! Like Vince B. mentioned… The tempura here is a bargain! I mean HUGE-ASS Shrimp Tempura for about $ 1.50 each– fresh too! My favorite is the Okinawan Sweet Potato Tempura and only $ 1– BIG slices too! What goes well with beer? Yup… You got it… TEMPURA!!! My Japanese friend, Akira, tried the Soba here and she said it’s not that bad. I mean she didn’t make a funny face and ate a full bowl + 2 Sapporos! The basic noodle bowls start around $ 5.25 to about $ 8 for the one’s with more«stuff». So, even if it’s not the best, my friend did indicate it was good enough and she’s from JAPAN! Oh, let’s not forget how cheap it is! I have to agree with the overall rating here at 3-Stars… It’s not bad, but not the best either. Just kind of there with a ton of «the domino effect», very yummy tempura, average noodles, buuuuuut hella close to MYYATAIMURABEERGARDEN! Then again… EVERYTHING taste better with good Kirin, Sapporo, Asahi on tap, right? Yup, that’s it! «The domino effect!» ***This is the 9th part of my Shirokiya Series. Follow me to follow my journey! The good news is we have a ton and a half of noodle shops here on Oahu. The bad news is we have a ton and a half of noodle shops here on Oahu. Lots and lots to choose from and after a while one develops a favorite noodle profile. Everyone has their top 5 noodle shops on the tip of their tongues. And, when trying a new noodle shop one’s noodle sensors are turned up high. Well, I know you are wondering to your selves, «Was it good or what?» Tempura: 5 big stars on the tempura. Large pieces of shrimp tempura but mostly veggie tempura. Pumpkin, sweet potato, eggplant etc. About $ 1 per piece but the pieces are big and you select your own. Hot with dipping sauce provided. I’ve had these many times. You can get just tempura pieces by themselves. The tempura is Good! Soba Udon Etc: Many various combinations both hot and cold. With pork, beef or tempura. Recently, I got the soba noodles with tempura. It was hot and good but my noodle sensors did not get too excited. I can think of five other places that I would have rather been. It was good as a meatless dish. This is food court style noodles. So I’m going with 3 stars. I’d eat there again if I was in the mood for soba or udon. Service: Well organized and efficient. Noodles are freshly prepared and served quickly in a ceramic bowl. Slight language barrier when ordering. But that sort of adds to the authenticity. Ambiance: Busy, busy, busy food court! Advice: There are another 2 ramen type noodle shops near by and there will be at least one more new place soon. Comparison shop! That is what everyone is doing while they walk around.

Not a lot of reviews but that’s probably because the majority of people that eat here are tourists. I had a bowl of beef udon soup which was somewhat filling after emptying my bowl and it was tasty. The second time I went, I had to beef yoba soup. Because the noodles were thinner, it was less filling. I’m pretty much a local here so for me to spend $ 8 on each, I expected to be full. They have selections that don’t have meat that are cheaper but you definitely won’t get full but if cost isn’t an issue, then this place might be right for you or tourists that don’t mind spending.

I got the regular katsudon while my girlfriend got the mini. The price of the food,$ 8 for the regular and $ 5 for the mini, doesn’t match the quality or quantity of the food given. The regular comes in a smaller than average ramen bowl with roughly 5 pieces of katsu. While the mini is a miso soup bowl with 3 mini pieces of katsu. Overall, the food was decent but for the amount we got for the price, wasn’t worth it in my opinion.

Came here for lunch one afternoon. I had originally wanted Gomatei downstairs but the line was too long for comfort. Walked around the second floor of Shirokiya for quite some time until finally deciding on this place. God there’s too many great places to eat! Anywho, me and mommy decided on eating here. I got the Katsu Don and my mom got the soba tempura. The total came out to ~$ 17. My katsu don was pretty tasty and my mom said her soba noodles were pretty good, so taste-wise, this place was wasn’t bad at all. The only drawback for me was the amount of food you got for your money, or what I like to call, your ‘bang for your buck.’ And lemme tell you, I love getting my bang for my buck. But this bang wasn’t as good this time around. Even my mom remarked after that there wasn’t that much food. I thought my donburi bowl was going to dip a little deeper, but it didn’t. :( Other than that, I would’ve loved to give this place 4 stars, but alas, I can do no such thing.
