Hiroshima or Kansai? Luckily, I came with someone who wanted to try BOTH so we got BOTH!!! on the Hiroshima, i of course added green onions and yolk in which they give you TWO handful scoops of green onion.($ 3) and for the Kansai we added cheese and mochi. I think I’ve found a new love: KANSAI! I’m not sure what it is, but its just perfect in every way, especially when adding the cheese(i didn’t care so much for the addiction of mochi as they don’t put that much in so you’ll get a few bites of it) This will probably be the only thing I’m ordering everytime I come back. I introduced my brother here and he’s been back a few times since with different friends who say they love the food here just as much

This was my first okonomiyaki experience, and I loved it! PARKING: Parking in Kapahulu is mostly street. Make sure to park right before 6:00pm, since it’s free any time after that. After you park, just walk across the street and into the same building as Hee Hing. It’s not clearly marked, but it’ll be on the top floor. SERVICE: service was good since this place is really small. The owners are really nice and friendly. FOOD: always get the okonomiyaki! they have other options, but definitely get the okonomiyaki! with the egg on top, its a good size meal for only $ 8.00 + add-ons. make sure you try it with the Japanese mayo that they serve. It’s delicious! Overall, it was awesome! Definitely would come back. It’s also BYOB for those that want to drink something other than water and soft drinks. Cheers!

Very good place for okonomiyaki at a reasonable price! At a base price of only $ 8, this will get a regular hiroshima style okonomiyaki. There’s a list of optional toppings for your pancake priced from $ 1 – 3 each as well as many appetizers. We got the regular hiroshima style okonomiyaki which was very tasty. Be warned, though, the place is a bit hard to find because there is no obvious signage from the road. It’s basically where Hee Hing is. The atmosphere is also lacking as the restaurant layout and décor is neither efficient nor comfortable.

After seeing an Ad for this place in one of those«Places to Eat in Oahu» tourist magazines and reading the positive Unilocal reviews, I thought I would give this place a try since I LOVE Okonomiyaki. A big plus for me, before I start talking about the actual place, is that there is parking downstairs. I went there on a Sunday afternoon and didn’t have to pay anything but I think, judging by the other reviews, that others might have had to pay for parking at some point or other. And, as a side note, if you have a bigger vehicle, you might want to swap out and share a ride with someone with a compact vehicle. Just saying. You’ll understand when you take a look at the parking lot. The actual place was a little hidden but not TOO hard to find. The interior threw me off a bit because it seemed so disheveled and neglected but don’t let that stop you from eating here! The service was amazing and on point and so was the food! I ordered Okonomiyaki Kansai style with an additional topping of Ika(Squid) and I absolutely loved it! Reminded me of the old days back in Japan. So, to keep things short. Interior is blah but the food is amazing so go check this place out. Plus, it’s MUCH cheaper than that Okonomiyaki place in Waikiki and just as good.

$ 3.50 Sapporo Draft? Awesome Cheap Okonomiyaki? YESPLEASE! Shochan is a hidden gem on Kapahulu Ave. where you can get authentic, cheap okonomiyaki! There’s a lack of décor and ambiance, but it is a clean restaurant with GREAT customer service! My friends and I all got Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki(choice of udon or yakisoba). I added squid and mochi, while my other friends ordered a combination or kimchee, cheese, green onion/egg, etc. Everytime I’ve been here, it’s been cooked to perfection! No complaints! It’s great to see the chef making your okonomi right there on the okonomiyaki grill. You can even sit at the counter for the authentic okonomiyaki experience cooked right in front of you(just like in Japan!). To top it off, they serve up Sapporo Draft for $ 3.50 everyday, all day! The beer is ice cold and perfect with your okonomiyaki. They also bring out japanese mayo and spicy okonomi sauce so that you can customize your okonomi just the way you like it! P. S. Park on the street for cheaper/easier parking.

Can’t believe I have survived so long without ever having tried okonomiyaki… what? I always add green onions and cheese to mine. Mochi is also a really good addition. My boyfriend and I get the hiroshima style and with all of our extra toppings it usually adds up to a little under $ 30 with tax and tip. I have never had okonomiyaki until recently and now I can’t stop thinking about it. The texture reminds me of cake noodles and it tastes really fresh! You could probably share one since it’s so big but I always end up wanting my own. Parking sucks in the building. You have to valet and sometimes theres a line for the valet service. The parking in the bank is free after hours but I always find parking in the neighborhood. If you like noodles, or think you like noodles. You won’t regret trying it out. It’s DELICIOUS.

You will never talk down about noodles after coming here. A hidden gem that’s tucked away in the Hee Hing plaza, Shochan is located on the top level along side popular sushi joint Tokkuri-Tei on Kapahulu closer to the zoo. You can park for free in the bank lot when the bank is closed! Family owned, I have always seen the constant faces of the Japanese man making the okonomiyaki and the Japanese woman who sometimes takes my orders and delivers my tea. I love seeing familiar faces at restaurants, especially those of the older generation. It makes me feel a great sense of love for their shop. There have always been a table open, which is bitter sweet. I wish this place had more traffic, because the food is so well made and the atmosphere delightful! Okonomiyaki is a Japanese«pancake» of noodles. It’s cooked on a griddle and is made with various ingredients like a meat, green onions, cabbage, kimchi, etc. In Hiroshima style, the ingredients are layered. So the batter portion is made thinner and is layered on top of the noodles and your choice of mixings. The Kansai style is everything mixed together with the batter, such as a pancake. This place has both so you can choose. Their noodles are firm and well cooked, not too egg tasting, and not oily which I love. Their miso is also very tasty. I am also so so in love with their kushiage! They use grinded up panko to coat the desired fried items in so the end product isn’t as oily! It also makes a thinner coating which is sooo nice because you don’t taste a thick batter surrounding a nice piece of lotus root or sweet potato. And since it doesn’t absorb as much oil, you still get a crisp but without that yucky feeling in your mouth of oil dribbling from your bite. Everything on the menu is a must try. It is pricey though(excluding the decent priced okonomiyaki), and definitely can be if you’re starving. But it’s a great treat and I love supporting this place. Oh and order their tea! It’s awesome. I know tea is usually just tea, but theirs is brewed perfectly! Oh and PPS! Their spicy okonomiyaki sauce isn’t that spicy, so I recommend trying that one. If you’re not familiar with okonomiyaki sauce, it’s a little sweet and syrupy so don’t pour too much if you’re not a fan of corn syrup-y texture.

This was the first time I’ve ever eaten okonomiyaki as I actually never heard of it until I read some Manga a while back(I think from Ranma ½ haha) so going in I wasn’t really sure what to expect. The restaurant is located in the same building as Hee Hing and right next door to Tokurrei Tei. There is valet parking on the ground level, but there is ample street parking on Kapahulu. I had ordered the okonomiyaki and the mushroom wrapped in bacon. There are two types of okonomiyaki that you could order, Hiroshima or Kansai, basically one has the noodles mixed in while the other doesn’t. I’m definitely not an expert in okonomiyaki, but I thought it was good! The flavor was savory and it had a nice sauce. It’s not the most filling meal as most of it is just veggies and noodles and I was still a bit hungry afterwards. I think next time I would order extra meat or more toppings. The mushroom wrapped in bacon was quite good, but it’s bacon, can’t really go wrong with that haha. Since I’ve gone to Shochan I’ve also gone to Yaki Yaki Miwa, and I actually liked that restaurant better. Yaki Yaki Miwa is a bit more pricier, but I thought the okonomiyaki was just fantastic. I still wouldn’t mind coming back to Shochan as it is a nice restaurant that you can get a nice little meal that isn’t too expensive and has a nice taste.

This place is awesome! They do not have many tables but the place itself is really spacious so you do not have to worry about people around you. They have a bookshelf with comic books. How cool! The okonomiyaki is made fresh in front of customers on the hot table. I love their Hiroshimayaki(with noodle)! Make sure to put lots of sauce and mayonnaise. There are lots of topping choices like cheese, scallion, mochi, kimchi, seafood and natto. Their okonomiyaki is really big so one is more than enough to fill you up. I recommend to share one hiroshimayaki with your friend and order some side dishes! The servers here are nice and friendly too. This place is a really good option for cheap and delicious meal, if you are tired of over priced mediocre food in Waikiki. It is located north of the Zoo… I would say about 15 – 20 minute walk.

Why is it always so empty here? I discovered this place about a week and a half ago on Unilocal, browsing through the list of nearby restaurants to satisfy my hunger. I didn’t realize this place was right next to Tokurri-Tei. This is a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant on the 2nd floor of Hee Hing Plaza. This is my first okonomiyaki experience, and I loved it! We’ve already ate there 3 times since we first found this place. Depending on what you order, the wait might take awhile. But they do make your okonomiyaki right in front of you(kinda) — there’s a kitchen in the front of the restaurant. I’ve only tried the okonomiyaki(hiroshima style) — they have 2 styles of okonomiyaki — and their karaage chicken. The okonomiyaki is huge! And it’s only $ 8. Their karaage chicken is also tasty and very flavorful. However, a small bowl is $ 6, so not as cheap. But you must try their hiroshima style okonomiyaki. They also have a stamp card so when you purchase 10 okonomiyaki’s, you get one free. And Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the double points days! 2 stamps for one order! :)

Today, tried the«Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki» of Manmen-Tei at Shirokiya(special through 11⁄12). Than Shochan — less ingredients, no bonito flakes, less taste(sauce much milder. Diluted?), less artistry, less filling, less satisfying for $ 7.80. For $ 8, you get so much more at Shochan. See my review below. Shochan is the real deal. Chef Yamamoto got it going on. Check him and Hiroshi Mayaki aka«Shochan» out(lulz). You’ll be glad you did. Itadakimasu!

I’m a big fan of okonomiyaki. I’ve been a fan since we made it in Japanese class years ago. Today I didn’t have much of an appetite, but I tried my friend’s one. When I ordered a beer with my tastings, the server didn’t look at me weird at all. This was greatly appreciated. Either he was extremely professional, or it’s very common here. Kudos to the server. The menu had English translations, but the shapes on it were difficult to understand. The shapes mean except, or it doesn’t come in that style. There were two types, one with noodles and one more plain. The okonomiyaki that had kimchi in it didn’t have kimchi until the very end, and the batter was too thick for my taste. 4 stars. Good friends, good service, and easy going atmosphere. I’ve had better okonomiyaki though. Would visit again.

When you walk into a restaurant at 6:30 pm on a Saturday night, and there is only one other couple in the restaurant, you wonder whether this visit is going to be a mistake. We were tempted to take a detour to neighboring Tokkuri Tei, but we crossed our fingers and headed into Shochan Hiroshimayaki. My hubby and I started with a couple of pupus — fried chicken and tendon. The servings were very small — barely enough for two people. The fried chicken was good and not too greasy, but I don’t know if I would order it again because of the price in comparison to the serving size. We also split the Hiroshima okonomiyaki(with soba noodles). We really liked it and would definitely order it again. The biggest disappointment was the bacon wrapped enoki that I ordered off the kushiage menu. Taste-wise it was ok, but it only came with one small shroom on the stick, and that was $ 2. Way overpriced. By far the best part about our meal(aside from the company) was the okonomiyaki. I would come back, but only for the okonomiyaki.

So, the posse wants to go and have an okonomiyaki dinner. Ok, they decide on this place called Shochan Hiroshimayaki on Kapahulu. Park in the valet parking lot downstairs and proceed to the restaurant upstairs. What’s the first thing I see? Tokkuri Tei… Looking at the sign to Shochan, it says«Japanese Healthy Foods»… Oh boy, I’m in trouble. Practically empty restaurant and Tokkuri Tei beckoning me to enter! Didn’t bargain for a healthy dinner tonight, I want meat! And tempura, and beer!!! Try to slyly sway the gang into changing their minds, no dice! So we are seated, given our menus and our drink orders are taken. Us guys order Sapporo on draft… Uh, sorry, only two available. What? Wassup with that… Ok, I’ll take an Asahi, bottle please. Down it quickly(thirsty) and order another. Ok, let’s get down to dinner. We order the Hiroshima style okonomiyaki. Uh, sorry, but no shrimp… What? Wassup with this place… No more nothing! Ok, they’ll deduct $ 2.50 for 1 order sans the shrimp. Sides? We decide to order items such as, tendon w/ponzu, shrimp kushiage, hasu kushiage and pork kushiage. Very small portions so don’t order it as a meal.:) Our Hiroshima style okonomiyaki comes to the table piping hot. It looks very intricately prepared, very labor intensive! It starts off with a huge pile of cabbage on the grill and then the various ingredients are added. Then when it’s finished, a heaping pile of green onions are added on top of it. It was ok, I’ve had other okonomiyaki meals before in different styles. I left here feeling hungry yet, I’d say come here for beer and pupus… Oh, just a note, we all got the Tsunami Warning while we were in the middle of our meal!!! I might go back some day, but I hope when I do they have more Sapporo draft and shrimp on hand! «Yelp’s 31’s» — #30/31

I’m so hesitant to write a good review… because I want this place to stay a hidden gem!!! Located on the second floor in Kapahulu(same plaza as Tokkuri Tei) you’ll miss this quaint mom-and-pop restaurant if you don’t look carefully. The place itself is on the small side, with about 6 tables inside with«bar» seats that overlook the teppan-style grill. They specialize in okonomiyaki: they have a few different styles with additional toppings that you can add to customize to your liking. I’ve been there for both lunch and dinner– I recommend dinner time because they offer more appetizers and their menu expands just a smidge. They also offer all day happy hour on a few beers, score! Their prices are EXTREMELY reasonable and their portions are ginormous. Unfortunately the restaurant was empty both times I visited and I really can’t figure out why because I LOVETHEM. But don’t take my word for it… try it yourself :) Quick Tip: free parking during dinner hours in the FHB parking lot.

If you don’t look carefully, you might think Shochan is just an extension of Tokkuri Tei… that’s what I thought and nearly walked right by. And it looks like an old small ballroom décor from a crappy hotel. Bare beige walls, old looking tables and chairs and the tables don’t get cleared since there aren’t too many people working there. There’s a weird big space in the front, where it looks like a waiting space might be, but it sort of feels like a dirty karaōke room or something with random books on the shelf against the wall. Ok that aside… I did enjoy the place quite a bit. OKONOMIYAKI: you can’t really find Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki too many places so it was enjoyable. Tried one with soba and one with udon. The SOBA tastes a little denser because I think the noodles smush together much more when they cook that one but the UDON one doesn’t quite pack together. It’s like the difference between cake noodles and just regular chow mein. The standard comes with the normal stuff like cabbage, egg, pork, etc but you can do add ons like kim chee, seafood, more meat, green onions(beware, it’s a huge mound of it=yum!) and more. CHICKENKATSU: this was my favorite thing all night. Tasty, juicey chicken breast. This is the best I’ve had in a while. It brought me back to the days when Minato used to make the best chicken breast katsu. But alas, even they fell victim to the cheaper chicken thigh. Oh yeah, served with a side salad with Japanese like dressing. 3 small pieces of chicken katsu in one serving, maybe 2 – 3 inches in diamater – small plate dining. TEPPENYAKI: the chicken was ok. Not my thing. simple flavored chicken served with a side salad. TOFU: enjoyable. Nothing too special, nothing too fresh tasting but it was good. They also do ODEN, but we didn’t partake. PARKING: validated valet parking in the downstairs lot of Hee Hing($ 3 with validation + gratuity) RESERVATIONS: they take it. make it. There are about 8 tables with 4 seats maybe? SERVICE: not too great because they are understaffed, but they are friendly. Don’t expect to be in and out of there in a jiffy if it’s crowded. The cooking takes time(and is done right out there so you can see it) and the table waiting takes time with only one person waiting. So go in when you have some time, be patient and definitely try this place out at least once. Then be your own judge. I’m going back, and hoping it’ll go up to 4 stars if they can work out some of their kinks. CREDITCARDS accepted. And now(summer 2012) there is a coupon in the Dining Out for 10% off.

FORTHEPRICE — you can’t go wrong. I enjoyed my meal overall, hence the 4 stars… Where else can you get a HUGE dish that 2 could easily share, for less than $ 10?! This recently opened next to Tokkuri Tei(Kapahulu) in the old Sam Choy’s spot. Just a fair warning, since I didn’t think to check Unilocal before I went here: try not to have high expectations as far as ambiance/décor goes or you are going to be in for one hell of a surprise, like I was. It is NOT like Chibo, and not even as nice as a decent L&L or Mc Donalds restaurant, even. Also get ready to be accommodating and very patient, because as of right now, ONE lone guy seems to run the entire floor(takes orders, fills water, delivers food, and also plays cashier). Poor thing. Anyway, you walk in, and I was honestly shocked. Go check it out and see for yourself what I mean by that. It REALLY could use some new dining furniture and some dimension/layout to the dining room. Granted they are a relatively new establishment, but the layout(or lack thereof) is just sparse and awkward. It is neat to be able to watch as your okonomiyaki is being prepared though. Chef is in the back of the room and you can watch him cooking everyone’s food while you wait for your order. Overall, the food is good. Okonomiyaki here wasn’t nearly as greasy as others I have tried, so I enjoyed it a lot more than usual. We had three Hiroshima style ones at our table(each comes with pork and beansprout/cabbage mixture… then I added in kim chee to mine)…and one Kansei(mixed up with yamaimo)…ask for the Japanese mayo! Ordered a bunch of oden too, my favorite was this fried tofu one… delicious. I’ll definitely go back for a cheap, filling meal.

I have visited Hiroshima and Osaka many times while I did study abroad and the JET program and I have to say that my favorite food(besides sushi) is OKONMIYAKI!!! I have been searching for a good okonomiyaki place in Hawaii and was very disappointed. Chibo is waaaay overpriced and not that great and the shirokiya one is just ok to me. It wasn’t until one day my friend said that there was a sticker on the Nijiya market okonomiyaki saying that the place opened a restaurant for their okonomiyaki. We decided to check it out and to our surprise this place is pure AWSOMENESS!!! This is the closest I have come to eating the real Hiroshima okonomiyaki! I eat here so many times but I use four square to check in so that why I’m the four square mayor of shochan. I only use Unilocal for reviews and this is by far my favorite restaurant. It’s sad that the place doesn’t get as much advertisement as it should and everyone I have recommended this place to is now a regular. It’s located in the old Sam choys in kapahulu right next to tokkuri tei on the second floor. The prices are great(not like the outrageous chibo prices) and there is only one guy making all of the okonomiyakis. He cooks each one the same it never seems like he skims off some of them just to save time. It’s a hidden gem of a restaurant and I’m sure if you try it you’ll be hooked too. ***My recommendation is get the Hiroshima style(it comes with pork already) add Kim chee and green onions, ask for light sauce and then put on the spicy okonomiyaki sauce(you have to ask for it) then put on the Japanese mayo on top of it all and BAM, you’ll be in okonomiyaki heaven.

I love okonomiyaki! I’m no okonomiyaki expert and I don’t know the difference between the different styles, but I’m definitely an expert at shoving all of that egg and cabbage goodness into my mouth. I love Jinroku, but I can’t afford to eat there all the time, so I was so stoked to try $ 8 okonomiyaki at Shochan Hiroshimayaki. I ordered the Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki with green onions and it came with a massive mound of fresh green onions. Nice! It was a pretty hefty size and it came on a hot plate, which was awesome because it stayed nice and warm. I enjoyed how the thin layer of egg, bacon, soba, and veggies all came together with just the right amount of sauce. I really liked this okonomiyaki because it felt kind of healthy– it wasn’t super greasy and drowning in sauce like other okonomiyaki. It was definitely the most refreshing okonomiyaki I’ve had, if that makes any sense. I tried some of my friend’s okonomiyaki with cheese and mochi and that was good too. We also had a couple of appetizers– the tendon with ponzu was okay; it was more like beef niblets with konyaku. We also had a karaage chicken with some kind of sauce, and it was mostly sauce. I don’t think I’d order those again. Service was great! Our server was really nice and answered all of our questions about the menu, and gave us recommendations. As others have mentioned, Shochan Hiroshimayaki isn’t super slick and chic; it looks like an old family restaurant that serves local-style american food rather than an okonomiyaki restaurant. It’s actually kind of weird, but for the price, I’m not complaining. Shochan Hiroshimayaki is in Kapahulu. Therefore, parking sucks. Pray hard for street parking.

Living in Hawaii, we are blessed to have an abundance of Japanese restaurants. However, places where one can eat great okonomiyaki are hard to find, even here in Hawaii. On my never ending quest to try new places, I came across Shochan Hiroshimayaki and thought it would make the perfect late breakfast on a lazy Sunday morning. Open for only 2 monhts, Shochan Hiroshimayaki is located on the 2nd floor of the Hee Hing Plaza on Kapahulu Ave. If you drive fast like me, you will zip past this place since the sign is barely visible from the road. On my visit yesterday, I was the only party there which worried me a bit since most eateries are usually busy during weekends. Nonetheless, I do not know if this place will make it but let me say that the okonomiyaki here is the real deal and is first rate. The taste was so good that it brought back memories of my time spent living in Japan. For those of you not familiar with this yummy dish, okonomiyaki is a savory Japanese pancake that is predominatly associated with the Kansai and Hiroshima regions in Japan. At Shochan, I opted for the Hiroshima style okonomiyaki which starts off with a base of thin crêpe-like batter on the hot teppan grill and is topped with layers of cabbage, moyashi, and topped with slices of pork. As the huge pile of cabbage cooks, the pancake is pushed down and the yakisoba noodles are added to the pile. When everything is done cooking and ready for assembly, the pancake is topped with a thin layer of fried egg and lathered with a delicoius Otafuku sauce. After the panacke is assembled, it is served on a sizzling cast iron plate topped with nori flakes. At only $ 8, the price is very good for the quality of food. If you are looking to satisfy your okonomiyaki fix, this is definitely someplace to visit.
