It was rainy and overcast when we decided to walk all the way around Diamond Head. We stumbled upon this little park and stopped at a picnic table under the trees to watch two local guys prepare and go spearfishing. Great little park for a picnic.

We’ve passed by this park on numerous occasions while on our«treks» around Diamond Head State Monument but never really gave it a thought to stop here. There is no parking or restroom facilities in this neighborhood park. But, what I found out about this 1.3 acre parcel of land is that it was willed to the City and County of Honolulu by the Dillingham Family in 1976. It does not have beach access as its shoreline is a vertical seawall. The grassy area is basically underdeveloped but, coming here does provide a spectacular and up-close view of part of Diamond Head’s south shoreline. There is even an area that is set up like a stage to the ocean which makes it «perfect» for picture-taking. On some mornings, a group of people can be seen in yoga poses or even tai-chi poses. I suppose the reason why I’ve not written about this park before is that it doesn’t seem too«inviting». The grass is often overgrown and graffiti mars the side walls of the two surrounding estates.

I scoped this place out right before(literally) my friends were to be wed. Stunning, empty, grassy beach with a very short wall separating us from the water. We ixnayed our original spot and the whole wedding party made their way here in cabs(It is a very short drive from Waikiki). There is even a «stage» area up a couple of stairs where they said their vows. With Diamond Head and palm trees as the backdrop, and the intensely blue waters on this shore, it couldn’t have been more perfect in its spontaneity.
