A friend who’s spent much time in SE Asian suggested I check out the laksa at the Singapore vendor located in Maunakea Marketplace in Chinatown.(Didn’t realize there were two such restaurants, right next to each other.) I chose to first try 369 Singapore Asian Noodles and waited a few minutes as they prepared my noodles, adding several shrimp, a few types of shrimp cake and a bit of squid to my coconut-curry base.($ 7.25) The bowl was steaming hot to the touch and pleasantly hot to the tongue. At first bite, I enjoyed the(chili) warmth mixed with the coconut milk that cools things down, but after half a bowl, I was reaching for another napkin to mop up the sweat. The shrimp were sweet and moist, loved the fish balls, but could have done without the slices of fishcake. I left satisfied and continued to perspire for several minutes. Next week I’ll try 369’s neighbor to see what’s what. Note: Maunakea Marketplace, for the uninitiated, is an experience. Not at all dressed up. In fact, whatever the opposite of dressed up is, that’s Maunakea Marketplace. The food court is packed with different food vendors, several Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese, «local», Japanese and Chinese. Pick a place, then take a seat at a long, community table and enjoy the experience. For more on laksa…
