Volcano Island Honey Company

If you have the chance to spend some time on a tour of the apiary with Richard Spiegel, it might just be the best thing you do on the big island. It may also change your life. Their white honey is truly awesome and unique — hands down the best honey I’ve ever tasted. Go for the honey. Go to see the beehives in action and put on a beekeeper suit. But you might also appreciate the environmental and social philosophy that governs their commitment to the product, the bees and the employees. It’s integrity that you can literally taste — and the taste is glorious. Richard is proof that if you do the right thing, do it well and hold to your principles, you can still make it in this world. Although Richard is no longer the owner, I sincerely hope the new owners will carry on the vision that makes Volcano Island Honey so special.

I love Honoka’a. And whenever I’m in Honoka’a it means I’m on my way to Waipi’o Valley and then definitely up to Volcano Island Honey to get some of their yummy white honey.
So here’s the run down…
Rare Hawaiian Organic White Honey is GOOD. The nice lady at the establishment allowed us to try them with crackers and sooooo good. But not my fave. My fave is the Rare Hawaiian Organic White Honey with Organic Ginger. I can’t even begin to explain the complexity of flavor, but trust me… you’ve never had honey like this before.
I am dying to try the White Honey with Lilikoi and I will get some when I’m home this summer.
I actually use the honey with ginger in my pancake batter. It gives it a great taste and my kids LOVE it.
Aside from the great product, I love the ‘ahupua’a in which this place is located. You follow a windy road up the side of a mountain past horses (so cute) and it’s just beautiful… enjoy the ride up the Hamakua Coast to get here! I certainly do…

This is the absolute BEST honey that you will ever have the pleasure of putting into your mouth. When I was pregnant, I would sneak spoonfuls of the stuff. If you can’t make the journey to Hawaii (damn economy!), then order a jar of the white honey online… better yet… order 2. You will thank me. :)
