Johnny’s Restaurant is the closest thing I’ll ever find to Sunday dinner at my grandmother’s. Hands down the best home cooked comfort food anywhere in town. Thanks Tim Hontzas and crew for all you do to make Homewood home for my family and I. As long as you’re cooking in Homewood, we’ll be there eating. Peace, love, and fried chicken, my friend. The guy running one cash registered insisted on yelling«next customer» in an otherwise quiet restaurant. I’m sure there’s a reason but it really escaped those of us standing in line. The girl running the other register just stood there when we walked up… no greeting, no smile… just the feeling that she really hated her job and somehow blamed us for the problem. Sigh… The food’s really good — just don’t go expecting a warm welcome.

This is a very good lunch place I just read about, but it has been open a couple of years. Homewood downtown is a crowded place especially around lunchtime. Johnny’s was also packed, but the bussers and table runners are very efficient and super fast. This place is upstairs above a nail place, but the sign is easily visible. It is just across the street from Penzey’s. I had the hamburger steak with onions and for my vegetables I had mashed potatoes, side Greek salad and turnip greens. All were good and prepared without a lot of added fat. You can get a side salad of either Caesar or Greek. The Greek had fresh lettuce, plenty of tomatoes, black whole olives, feta and a small and proper amount of a light dressing. It was small but very good. It is worth noting, as I did, that this is such a meticulously prepared salad when this place is dishing out mass quantities of food. The hamburger steak was toothsome and properly seasoned. Mashed potatoes were real, not instant and the turnip greens were good and lean. I got cornbread with my meal and it was very moist, tasted of corn and was even better than I make. A thing to know about Johnny’s is that the food is cooked to order. It is not sitting around on steam tables like so many meat and three restaurants. Yeah, this place is really good. It is now on my list of places to frequent.

One of the best lunches I’ve ever had. Fantastic southern comfort food! I got the chicken pot pie, fried green tomatoes, sweet potato mash, and Greek salad. All were fantastic, especially the pot pie and sweet potato mash. Also, the servings are huge. I ate maybe half of my lunch, which came out to $ 11. I will always come back here whenever in the Birmingham area.

Ate lunch with my dad today at Johnny’s for the first time. We are both huge Niki’s West fans and walked away very impressed. We both ordered the Chicken Pot Pie as our meat. I had the macaroni and cheese and turnip greens as my 2 sides with a roll. He had the mashed potatoes with gravy and the purple hull peas with cornbread. Everything was good. Nice atmosphere. We will be back.
