How many people get to say that they had a short ukelele lesson on the side of an active volcano in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? What an unforgettable experience! Sam was such a cool person to talk to and patiently taught us a few chords in about 10 minutes. Obviously we did not become ukelele rockstars, but it was still a pretty unique activity to take part in. The workshop downstairs was messy and there wasn’t too much going on down there when we stopped in. The gallery, however, had some beautiful instruments on display/for sale. If you have roughly two weeks to kill, Sam will actually show you how to make your very own ukelele. When we docked in Kailua-Kona, we found a lot of seedy, touristy boutiques that had painted ukeleles as souvenirs. This place felt so much more authentic. The town is pretty out of the way from the port, but it is a must!

Sam was very kind and patient with us, and other families in his gallery. Kid friendly shop. He answered all our questions and is very knowledgable on the building and repair of Ukulele’s. He spoke highly of this quaint town and suggested a great place to eat near bye. A great place to stop and learn some local history. We will be back. He offers classes on how to build your own ukulele in 10 days. He is very skilled and is a patient teacher.
