We brought our Navigator Chapter on a tour this afternoon and it was wonderful. The classroom part was fascinating and the experience with the bison was amazing. We were all SO pleased with the entire operation. Thank you SO much for a wonderful outing.

Bison/Buffalo ranch near Chicago! If you live near Chicago and want to get away from the city for a day(or a few hours), I highly recommend checking this place out. Its probably an hour or so from the city. The first part of the tour consists of an informative talk on bison. It’s pretty interesting. The second part is the actual wagon tour through the ranch. You really get an appreciation for how huge these animals are when you’re up close. There’s a shop where you can buy bison meat, which is healthier than beef, pork, or chicken. The people who run this family-run business are down-to-earth and very friendly. The tour is cheap, but the meat can be a little pricey. Go check it out!

With so many disgusting practices in our food chain it only makes sense to make it as short as possible. We could eat a hamburger at McDonald’s, it does come from a cow/vat of cow meat somewhere, who may or may not have been stuffed with indigestible, genetically modified feed corn, antibiotics and growth hormones. We choose to buy our meat from Broken Wagon Bison because it is local, sustainable, delicious, and the animals live exactly as they should. These majestic animals are free to roam and graze in a large pasture, and when it comes their time, care is taken not to waste any part of the animal; similar to how the Native Americans did before we showed up and nearly drove the species to extinction.

For those who can’t eat red meat and are willing to pay a little extra for their meat, bison is just the ticket. It’s amazing having farm nearby. Just think bison right here in NWI! Who knew? Also as a heads up, if you are coming to buy some meat and not to take a tour you there isn’t always someone in the store. Occasionally you need to looking around for someone, knock on the door to the house, or stand around for a bit until someone notices you although that’s only happened to me twice and the people who own the farm live there so you can’t expect them to be on call 24⁄7.

Nice that they do tours, but the indoor schpeel was twice as long as it should be if kids are present, and many were. The outside part, when you take a tractor ride out to the bison paddock, was cool, but long since you can’t get out, pet, or feed the bison.

Just happened to run into this farm while driving on the back roads of Hobart, Indiana. They are a bison farm that offers meats, hides skulls, gifts and group/individual tours. All their items in the gift shop are someway associated with bisons; including soaps, marinades, purses, gloves, toys, etc. Very cute farm, and looking forward to making our bison Rib-eye steaks.
