One giant step for High Point, NC. In a town filled with enough furniture to fill God’s high-rise condo tower, there he is, John Coltrane, immortalized downtown with a beautiful statue. I hunt down statues of heroes every chance I get, and usually it’s nice to see a memorial done in a hometown. What makes Coltrane’s different is that not only do you have a statue… and a state-designated plaque… but you also have a textual display that talks about who the man is and his childhood spent in High Point complete with push-button sound samples! 5 selections from the man’s discography are chosen, allowing the curious to not only pay tribute to the icon but to hear why he is as regarded as he is. And those sound samples are LOUD! On a quiet Sunday morning, where I was the only person in sight, I could push the button and here«A Love Supreme» from at least 50 feet away with no problem. What a fitting way to remember the man, by hearing his sheets of sound echoing off the buildings in his home town.
