I needed 3 wisdom teeth extracted so I went in and he seemed nice. He wanted better pics of an impacted tooth. I got x-​rays and came back.
He looked at it and said the nerve was too close to the tooth and decided not to do it. The other 2 teeth were erupted (sticking out of gums) so he said ok for those. He had originally set me up to get laughing gas but I now asked if I really needed it. His answer was «oh, you’ll like it». So I said fine. Then I saw the bill and it was 1600 dollars to pull 2 teeth! The front desk assured me that insurance always covers these things. Luckily, I found out the $ 800 (unnecessary) laughing gas is almost never covered. So I cancelled that. I paid a down payment of about $ 70 and got the teeth pulled.
Imagine my surprise when I get another bill for $ 525 since barely any of it was covered. This dude had billed over 700 dollars in total just to yank 2 teeth out. I tried to get a reduction in the amount owed since insurance barely paid anything but they wouldn’t budge.
I later had 2 other dentists look at the inpacted tooth and they didn’t think it was very difficult to extract and one said «he chickened out»… but here’s my take: he wanted quick easy money and it wasn’t worth the trouble to take out the impacted tooth and he even figured he could sucker me into paying a ton for unnecessary lauging gas. So, in total, it was $ 700 ($ 600+ out of pocket) to him for pulling 2 teeth (much, much more if I got the laughing gas). A general dentist could’ve done the same thing for ¼th the cost and probably wouldn’t have pushed anesthesia that definitely wasn’t necessary!
