We had our son’s rehearsal dinner here. We had been working with a gal for about 6 months who was very helpful, but a couple of weeks before the wedding, she left the restaurant. Thankfully her replacement(Claudia) was phenomenal! She developed our menu, printed it out beautifully and was a very gracious hostess the night of our event. The wait staff was attentive and thorough. The food was delicious and they even provided service setup for our groom’s cake. Our whole experience with Square Root was a pleasure and we would recommend it to anyone.

I had Tuna Trio appetizer. It was excellent. I also had two of the Green Man IPAA beers excellent on tap. Very nice. The tuna entrée is made with five spices. It is absolutely heaven. If you’re in Hendersonville North Carolina don’t miss going to eat at the Square Root and make sure you get the Five Spice Tuna. Also that’s Carrie serving me in the video. Carrie works at the bar and is delightful. Management better up her salary or someone will steal her away cause she’s a peach.

The five spice tuna was amazing! As was the service and atmosphere. Every time I have been, the food and staff have been awesome. I 100% recommend this restaurant!

I’m now very much aware of why Unilocal reviewers have given this three stars. Firstly, it’s not a bad place I kind of think that they have a great menu and they plated it beautifully, but I was just not impressed with the food. It’s not that it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t memorable. I ordered the muscles as an appetizer and they were plated beautifully, but they were very busy and salty. The garlic wasn’t fresh garlic it was the stuff you get out of the jar. And it was so much stuff on the muscles that you couldn’t even find those little suckers. When my salad came, the salad look beautiful. However, I got a pad of butter that was wrapped in those commercial aluminum foil wrappers. I thought I was on a business class flight. My entrée, well I think that was my fault and with braised ox tails in cheer wine and it was very sweet and the oxtails I think needed a little bit more cooking. All in all this place deserves more than three stars but not much more, they have a great effort and a great menu I believe it if I try some more I’ll find what’s perfect there.

Not recommended for brunch. Coffee and mimosa were both good. Ordered the blueberry pancake special. Pancakes came out cold. I sent them back to be warmed up & when they came back they were just awful — I’ve tasted better pancakes from my grocer’s freezer. Sausage patties were hard and tasteless. Fruit cup came out in a very small ramekin(I got more syrup than I did fruit). Very disappointed! Waste of money! Service was slow by my northern standards but decent for local standards. Server, hostess, front of house staff were all pleasant. Chef seemed to give our table a nasty glare when we sent back the pancakes, but we could have been imagining things.

Terrible service, terrible food. We were seated quickly, but our server had no clue how to be a server — no friendly charm, had no clue about the menu, and took forever with everything. We waited 40 minutes for our food which is ridiculous for a salad and meatloaf sandwich. The appearance of our food was absolutely unappetizing and carelessly thrown together. My salad looked like it was balled up in someone’s hand. Avocados were brown. Ahi tuna was cold. My hubby’s meatloaf sandwich came on Texas toast bread that wasn’t toasted. Everything was a huge disappointment and unsatisfying. No one seemed to care, they all had negative attitudes. We will never return, nor recommend this place. There’s many awesome options in Hendo we love, and this won’t ever have the chance to be one of them.

My family of four enjoyed a great lunch at Square Root today. My son’s grilled chick Caesar was huge and delicious. My daughter loved her London broil sandwich. My husband’s Ruben was great and my pork tacos with Apple slaw were great. Speedy service was a surprise as they were packed due to the Apple Festival. A great treat!

Ate there twice. I was able to enjoy, a delicious burger with a gluten free bun. Staff was very knowledgeable about eating a strict gluten free diet. Felt prices a little high.

The Square Root deserves a review since this is now my second time to dine at this location. On both occasions the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. We had a larger group so we sat in the back of the restaurant. Several tables were out front and also outside. Kudos to our adorable server, Keana(I hope I spelled her name correctly). Food is top notch. Everyone ordered something different and were satisfied with their choices. We started off with the Zucchini strips with Chipotle Ranch and Fried Green Tomatoes drizzled with a creamy dijon sauce for appetizers. Spot on since we had them the first time, also! Today’s lunch choices were a little bit of everything from the menu. My friend and I both ordered the Tuna Tataki Salad — scrumptious!!! Ahi Tuna was cooked to our liking — rare and medium rare. Our other friends enjoyed a Black Bean burger, the Square Root Salad, a Reuben, the special — which was the Catfish Po’ Boy, and the London Broil Sandwich. They have a nice selection of local draft beers to choose from. We shared a piece of the Mango Cheesecake, which was a perfect bite of sweetness. Will definitely be back!

Great place and a great atmosphere. They had live music outside which added to the ambience and the overall experience. Great service as well. Highly recommend the Chocolate Tower. It is mouthwatering.

From the looks of other reviews, CONSISTENCY might be a problem for the kitchen at Square Root… and servers cannot get food out if it is not ready. However, we were at SR for brunch on Sunday May 10th. The restaurant was full but the hostess and wait staff had everything going smoothly front of house & the kitchen must have been doing well, too. Our server was excellent… put in an order for the sweet potato chips as an appetizer for us and brought out drinks. We ordered and our food came just as we finished our appetizer. The only thing I saw on the menu that seemed like a BRunch selection was the Monte Cristo… no omelets, benedicts, etc. But there was a nice selection of lunch entrees… my wife had a salad with grilled chicken, and I had the Cajun shrimp and smoked-gouda grit cake with spicy cream sauce. The SR has the BESTSWEETPOTATOCHIPS I’ve ever had anywhere… good quality sweet potatoes with just the right amount of sweetness, lightly-salted, and crispy(potato chip crisp) which eludes many who do chips in-house. These were definitely done in-house… thinly sliced lengthwise & crispy warm when served. My wife’s salad was good but not extra special. My shrimp and grits were a very tasty spin on that combination. The smoked-gouda grit cake(round and size of a Micky D biscuit) was a delicious subtle compliment to the shrimp and spicy sauce. I wish it had been a bit larger because I ran out of shrimp and grit cake well before I ran out of the delicious sauce. A few more bites to savor the sauce would have been appreciated. Excellent & different take on shrimp and grits. The Square Root is at the opposite end of the same block where Flat Rock Playhouse has its downtown Hendersonville venue so it would be a convenient choice when attending shows there. The décor is quaint and somewhat intimate(dimly but adequately lit), seating is not jammed so close that you are involved with other conversations nor overwhelmed by noise levels, and the facility appears well-maintained. I look forward to another chance to see a SR lunch or dinner menu when at the downtown playhouse.

Fresh, healthy ingredients. A healthy menu, enjoyable setting, friendly staff. Being regulars to the Flat Rock, Music on the Rock, we love coming here as it’s walking distance to our entertainment. Just a few doors down.

The food is delicious — creative and interesting! The service was really great — very friendly and accommodating with dietary needs. It’s a nicer restaurant — intimate with dim lighting. We made the mistake of bringing our young kids and wouldn’t do that again. :)

Several months ago I wrote. Saturday night and the place was steadily busy. Packed, but not so packed that you did not enjoy the quaint atmosphere. A fine restaurant that pays attention to detail! The hanger steak and potatoes and trout and rice was excellent. Quickly server and very tasty. The cheesecake was delicious. We will be back. On December 20, 2014, we were there again and turned out we ate the same menu items. Delicious! The staff is pleasant. The atmosphere just right. A little more than causal, but at same time you don’t have to be in a suit. Its a place you go for a dinner date or special occasion. a place you visit when you want to have some fond memories of the eveing.

I was drawn to this restaurant when I saw they have beignets but found then to be lacking. When I crave them, I expect fluffy, light fried diamonds of dough. These were heavy, hush puppy like. The cherry sauce was delicious though. The cardinal sin of brunch: a Benedict with not one but TWO solid yolks. One is forgivable. I am not a chef and I manage 50% perfect yolks. Two is just not good. The Gouda grits kinda smoothed things over in my mind. Guess this is why they were not so busy. The service was fine however. Will not return. It looks like there are some better options in the area.

Very nice feel and the window to the kitchen is really nice. I found it entertaining to watch the preparation even though it was from the sidewalk out front rather than from dining room. They had a guitarist playing very nice music and pleasant dining area. The server was impatient and impersonal though, they were, admittedly, fairly busy. The Pork Shank is memorable: tender and flavorful. The Chicken Breast, not so much. Sweet Potato Bourbon Bread pudding was a real disappointment. The Salmon, while a little sweet, had a really interesting and enjoyable taste but, the side veggies were a let down. Overall, the meal wasn’t really worth the steep price.

If you like to go out to eat don’t eat in Hendersonville. They don’t want you. I called for a take out on Saturday night, Memorial Day weekend. «Sorry we closed the kitchen at 8:30 pm.»(I called at 8:45 pm.) I ask, «You close at 10pm, correct?» The response? «Yeah but we closed early tonight because we weren’t that busy.» This is the second time in 48 hours that this has happened to me. My son is sick and we want some good food. Unbelievable. Keep driving to Asheville or head to Brevard if you want any type of customer service. I guess you are alright if you want to eat at 5:00pm. Better call ahead though. Square Root might have decided to close early. Just because…

Restaurant week in western NC continues… This place is very modern in design. The food here is very good. Although we just had lunch, the variety of the menu really has me wanting to get back to try more.
