They tailored a shirt I brought them and the sleeves ended up way too short. I can only wear that shirt now if I roll up the sleeves. I also had a problem with an unexpected price and he wouldn’t accommodate. Maybe he told me and I couldn’t understand his English, I’m not sure, but it cost me way too much and one of my garments was destroyed. I didn’t realize it until later so I didn’t let him know on the spot. I won’t be going back.

I’ve used Essex Cleaners for years — I used them a lot more when I lived in Havertown. It’s been 10 years since I’ve moved out of the area and I’m still looking for a dry cleaner that compares. I used to be in outside sales and traveled all over — I would frequently drop off shirts and suits at 10am, telling the owner(Kevin — after a short while we were on a first-name basis) I needed to pick them up and make an evening flight — and was able to pick up everything cleaned and pressed the same afternoon. Kevin and his staff were always super friendly and accommodating, he was tops at getting stains out, and the seamstress(Kevin’s wife, I think?) made fast, professional repairs and alterations to my clothes as well as blouses, skirts, and pants for my wife. I wish it were more convenient to get to Essex as I would still use them regularly, but when I have something important that needs to be cleaned and there’s no room for error, I’ll still make the trip down to Essex as they’ve earned my trust.

I brought in a new pair of pants to be cleaned for a wedding at the end of the week. When I came in to pick them up, I was informed that my pants have been lost. I asked for a refund for the cost of the pants that they had lost. Instead of money to replace the pants, the owner offered me their value in store credit,(so he could just lose more of my clothes for me). After a heated debate, and hearing the owner try to push the blame on one of his employees, I finally received a portion of what the pants cost. Several weeks later, after the wedding, I received a phone call that my pants had been found. I go back up to the shop, under the impression that I would simply pick them up. Instead of just giving my clothes back, which were never cleaned, the owner demanded that I pay him back for the cost of the pants. Somehow, the owner thought it to be fair to charge me more money than what he had given me to replace the pants. After another heated argument, he broke down asking for only half of what he had paid out. The argument continued until he said, «Fine, do whatever you want.» so I took my clothes and left. I would not recommend this kind of service to anyone. The owner is irresponsible, rude and unprofessional. There are numerous other dry cleaning services in the area, I would suggest any of those before going to Essex.

I brought in a two piece dress that I hadn’t worn in 25 years. It was stored away in the attic uncleaned with stains that I never knew were there. I decided I wanted to wear the dress to an upcoming wedding and took it to Essex to be cleaned. Kevin checked it all over but did not guarantee that the sequins would hold up and the stains would come out since the dress was so old and stored away dirty. Well in a week I went to pick it up and EVERY stain was gone! yes I mean gone. I couldn’t believe it. I told him he was a magician and he in turn said, «I’m a professional.» I would highly recommend Essex Cleaners in Manoa Shopping Center, Havertown, Pa.
