Zam Zam consistently serves up the best Indian fare in the metro area, and they do it at rock-bottom prices. You can’t beat the dinner for 2 for $ 25; soup, samosa, chicken tika masala, lamb curry, chana allo, jasmine rice, masala tea, AND dessert! To top things off, the service is always friendly and thoughtful. Did I mention that they are open until 11pm? This is a place that truly appreciates your business and deserves to be around for a long time. Check them out!

Desperate for Indian food at 10:50 on a week night I figured I was out of luck but I googled Indian restaurants in Detroit and this came up. Open til 11pm every night. Woo hoo finally one of those rare moments when Detroit actually feels like a big city instead of at the world’s biggest small town. Totally worth the trip and late night binge. Great food, the prices are cheap and nice adorable staff. The«fancier» dining room is a bit cold and could use some Indian tchotchke for atmosphere. I will be going back when I have earned a buffet gorging some time.

Alas, here’s how the glory of old Gandhi comes crashing down. The food went down hill and the service was a joke. Visiting this place is like trying to plug a leak in the hold of a sinking ship, with your bare hands, the merciful thing to do is to avoid this place and let the ship sink in peace.

I got two words for you buddy: Zam fucking Zam. This is excellent quality food, friendly staff, and the price is stupid cheap. If you live in Detroit(like, real Detroit, not the suburbs) this is your best bet for good Indian eats.

There is a carryout attached to the restaurant. This is for the dine in portion only. I have been here twice. The frist tome was during the weekend the MT’s reviewed ZamZam’s. The second time was this past Sunday. Each time we were the only people dining. I do realize it was Ramadan. Service seemed slow. They have a small menu… but man, are the prices cheap!!! I really want to compare it to Aladdin’s but I somehow, I always end up here. The restaurant is clean, but has no soul to it. Music is playing, but I do not recognize it as any Indian music I am familiar too… must be bangladeshi. I got the app. sampler. It consisted of 1 samosa, which was veg and smaller than usual… think they also used a different samosa dough. 2 small pieces of chicken tika, great red coloring to it. 2 lamb shishs. And finally, some pakora, all cabbage though. It was served with two chutneys: tamrind and a creamy mint also a chili sauce. We split the chicken tikki masala, I ordered it hot… got it with rice and ordered nan. The chicken was very tomato-ey…but good. No heat what so ever. At all. None. Bummer. Rice was fine. Only one piece of nan to an order but it was a little over a dollar. All in all a good meal, small portions, but small prices. I almost forgot… the raitia was way too sweet and was made from yogurt and carrots… no cucumber present.

Last night we went to Zam Zams for dinner. The coconut samosa keeps me coming back. it is sweet crispy and delicious. Good with any of the three sauces they offer. We got a variety of food to share at the table. The Motor Paneer was perfectly spicy and served with a thick flavorful sauce. The paneer(cheese) was very fresh and firm. The lamb curry was spicy as well without being too spicy with a rich tangy sauce. The Vegetable curry was probaly the only dish lacking on the table. Vegetables where a little over cooked and it was missing something. Portions are large and prices are good.

Great food and service. This restaurant is my favorite. Zamzam features a casual cafeteria style dining room(favored by the locals), and an upscale dining room(where my family and I eat). The menus differ slightly in choices and price. The casual room features mostly traditional ‘bone-in’ Indian dishes and a’la carte appetizers, the formal dining room has more boneless meat dishes. Most entrées feature a choice of rice or Naan bread. My favorite is the«Chicken Vindaloo»(a very spicy chicken and potato dish). My wife loves the«Tandoori Chicken Biryani». We have tried the«Chicken Biryani», «Chicken Korma», «Chicken Karahi», and many of the side dishes and appetizers. I have never been dissatisfied with any choice. The service is exemplary. Often hard to find in an Indian restaurant, Zamzam has all«Halal» food(a Muslim dietary code similar to «Kosher»). I live in Royal Oak, but find the drive to Hamtramck well worth the effort for such an excellent dining experience. Enjoy !!!

Disclaimer: Clueless white girl review After getting my hair done, I decided to give this place a shot. Some cabs were stationed outside, and I was fortunate enough to witness one of the guys blow a snot rocket on the pavement & shake it off of his hand. YUM! Great for the appetite. As mentioned, not much atmosphere going on in here. The gentleman who helped me was nice though. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala. He asked me if I’d like basmati rice or naan with it. Expecting to pay extra, I asked if I could have both. He told me I couldn’t do that. Um… ok, he clearly misunderstood. So, I chose the rice and ordered a side of naan. It didn’t take long for the food to be ready. For less than $ 9, I got a pretty decent amount of food. I got home to find that I was given a little side salad, I guess. I’m not really sure what to make of it. It was shredded iceberg lettuce and some diced tomatoes. The lettuce was not in very good shape at all. No dressing, so I wondered is it garnish? I really have no idea. I threw it out simply because it was in bad shape. There was no shortage of rice! It was just ok. Nothing special. The chicken was pretty good, and made the rice taste better. The naan wasn’t too bad either. I’d revisit ZamZam to see what else they have to offer. I’ll try to be a little more informed with my next order. On a side note… the takeout menu is pretty funny. There is a tremendous amount of typos.

I was so excited to read(via Laura K’s review) that a new Indian place had sprung up at the old Gandhi locale. Yep-the interior has been scrubbed clean of any personality… I am hoping this fills in with time. I liked the old bar, the booths, and the buffet table-now it feels a bit bare with only tables and chairs scritching across the stone floor. Our waiter though was lovely and so were our meals! Tandoori chicken is often too dry for me, but here it melted in my mouth without being fatty. My kofta balls were really fabulous, though the sauce was a teensy bit bland. They have hard-to-find coconut samosas, and CRIMINY they were good!!! Uncle Butch’s korma did him right, so we left full and quite happy. I just wish it were a bit cozier… dimmer lighting for sure… candles even. Aw who am I kidding-I’m just knee-dropping grateful to have an Indian place on the east side again!
