Reliably good takeout pizza. No space to eat inside. Great service from the owners!

Searched far and wide in Hamden for pizza after my favorite, Amato’s on State Street in New Haven closed down. Cappie’s, hands down, makes a fabulous pizza!

Best pizza ever. Always get onion and garlic large. Pepe’s sucks and modern is only second best with Cappie’s! So glad it’s also down the street from me

Really enjoyed my meatball pizza. Way better than the local Spring Glen options. I will be ordering again! Sauce is amazing!

Sorry. This pie didn’t do it for me. Unimpressive tomato sauce without much flavor, and an oddly too thick crust. Basics not there.

The owner is a nice guy. The pizza is great and carefully prepared. I do feel the prices could be a little better though, but I don’t mind supporting a small business(compared to Eli’s right across the street). This is a takeout pizza place; do not plan on coming here to eat-in. Parking is located behind the building. They offer delivery too.

I think maybe I’m just stingy with stars or people have lower standards. Being from northern NJ, I’ll be honest and say most pizza and food offends me if its not perfect. After living in CO for 5 years, I’ll just say my standards leveled out to more of that of a normal person. That being said, I approach every new food experience with an open mind. Sad to say, this pizza was just ok. Happy it wasn’t burnt like most pizza in the area, but why oh why is it so damn hard to cook pizza without having a soggy middle? You are the professionals, charging a premium for cheese and dough, and I demand better as a customer. Thank God grilling season is here, I’ll be home grilling my ‘za. I think 1 try is all I can handle.

We ordered from here twice and were disappointed both times. The pizza isn’t anything special and the dough very«bread-y.» The prices are reasonable however. The second time I got a pasta dish and am pretty sure it was box pasta with some under seasoned tomato sauce.

When I moved to Hamden last summer, Cappie’s quickly asserted itself as my go-to pizza place. Simple and to the point. Sweet sauce, enough dough to the crust, real ingredients. New Haven style pizza is no joke, and Cappie’s hits it right while also avoiding some of the soggy middle issues you get with that style. A large sausage and mushroom pie there is the tastiest $ 20 you’ll spend.

Best pizza in Hamden! This is the best kept secret in the area! Absolutely love the pizza here. Owner Mike and his son Brian are extremely friendly and even opened up early to make and deliver pizzas to my daughter’s birthday party in Cheshire! All pizzas are thin crust and the BBq chicken pizza is awesome! Generous amounts of toppings on all pizzas. Highly recommend this place over the other place across the street. My recommendation is call early on a Friday or Saturday as they get busy and you could have a wait for pick up or delivery.

The grizzled old guy who works there is a riot. Pizza is a rare highlight in the otherwise food wasteland that is Hamden. Nothing fancy but solid.

Great pizza and a great family. Best pizza in Hamden hands DOWN. Small shop with one oven so pick-up and delivery times could run a little long when they are busy, but well worth the wait.

I have to say, I really do love my pizza. And while almost all pizza tastes good to me(let’s be honest– even certain occasions call for Pizza Hut), Cappies is TRULY good. Good crust, good sauce,… Yummy yummy to the very end :)

Cappie’s on State Street in New Haven in the 50’s/60’s was a place, as a boy that Cappy and my Dad, who had a repair garage nearby, would more times than not be like the«Bobsey Twins»! There were always pizza at the Garage ALL the time. My Dad also did Frank Pepe’s automobile repairs as well(so we NEVER waited in line back then) but Cappie’s was my favorite, even back then. I was very excited after being away from New Haven for 20+ years to find the Grandson and his son so close to where I live. Cappie’s is a true secret of good pizza that you can find away from Wooster Street. Try it, you’ll like it!

Tried Cappie’s for the first time a few months ago. Looking for a new place that delivers. Great location, easy parking behind the plaza in the lot. I was picking up the pizza and they offered to walk it out to my car. Ordered the basics, 1 cheese, 1 cheese and pepperoni, and one with chicken and peppers. All of the pizza was good thin crust. The sauce was a little sweet. Overall the pizza was decent. Nothing special and nothing offensive.

We are new to the area and wanted to try something different. Ordered from Cappie’s and I can say– we were not disappointed. From the incredibly friendly staff to the hot, crispy, delicious pizza, this has been our go-to pizza place for the past few months. And when you want a little more than pizza– their calzones are out of this world!

I like learning about the old pizza joints that put New Haven on the proverbial pizza-making map. When pizza was virtually unknown to the rest of the country, Italian New Haveners were making it and eating it as a common part of their diet. Cappie’s was one such pizzeria from the days of yore. I wasn’t alive back then but my parents do remember the original Cappies located on State Street during the 1950’s. Now the only connection between the old Cappie’s and this«newer» Cappie’s, other than its name, is probably its bloodline(the current owners are the grandson of the original Cappies). In fact a few of the original Cappie’s signs adorn the walls of the front room. The word adorn is a stretch of the word because other than that there’s not much else inside this joint. There’s no tables/chairs and nothing in the windows. Nada. Nothing. When entering the front room you’re just going to see a very tired looking counter, a cash register, and a couple $ 3 hokey looking paintings. The ovens are in the back room. So after speaking fondly of their history, it pains me to say that their pizza isn’t anything to get excited about. Cheese and sauce were fine but the crust could use a little more work. The crust looked cooked but it didn’t taste cooked. Not surprisingly the crust is the hardest thing to get right with any pizza. Also, there was a strong foul smell that I couldn’t put my finger on(it might have been oregano). Cappie’s pizza might be considered great for New York, but by New Haven standards, it’s probably just on par with every other local pizza joint. DiMatteo’s pizza is a step up and is perhaps my all-time favorite pizzeria in all of Hamden One interesting note… check out the old 1958 Cappies’s menu hanging on the wall. The word mozzarella is spelled«muzzerella». Now I don’t know if that’s by accident or intentional, but personally I call it «mootz» for short. Also check out the topping«hamburg». That’s interesting too because my old grandmother used the very same word to describe hamburger. The«–er» was nonexistent to her. Maybe it’s a generational thing.

Cappies is wonderful pizza. Pros: High quality ingredients, unimaginable flavor, incredible sauce, and an authentic taste. CUSTOMERSERVICE! Cons: Logistics. Slow delivery and their hours. Do NOT order from them if there is inclement weather. Only takeout or delivery. If you are lucky enough to get someone on the phone, there is no question who you should order from in Hamden. I’ve eaten at all of the places in Hamden, Branford, and New Haven and this is my favorite, but to each his own. Their service is incredible and they are friendly. I once waited for 1.5 hours for a pizza due to a snow storm and they gave me a freebie, which they honored. They’re the type of place that really respects their patrons and even remembers you. I believe they’re actually a father and son operation and they’re wonderful people. Eaten there 7 times and only 7 because I pride myself on trying all the newbies that the New Haven area has to offer. This one is the best for me though.

One of the best pizza deliveries I have ever tasted. The pizza always arrives piping hot and fresh! The pizza has a thin crunchy crust with fresh tasting sauce and a good quality cheese that has lots of flavor. The menu is fairly simple consisting of pizzas and a few salads. You can pick the pizza up or have it delivered. I think its cash only too. I tried lots of different pizza places that deliver, but this is by far the best Ive come across in the area… a must try!!!

Cappie’s Pizza is really good. I was looking for a different place to pick up pizza last week and found Cappie’s on Unilocal. It fit all the requirements — open late(’til 11) since I was stopping in after work, not too expensive, and an actually good pizza. Thin crust(though not New Haven-style thin), not burnt, but good slightly smokey flavor in the crust, good amount of crunch from the crust, fresh-tasting sauce, and lots of chewy, salty cheese. I wasn’t sure where to park, but I snuck into the big lot on the corner since I was only stopping in for a minute. I was a little surprised when I walked in and saw nothing but a counter and very blank walls, but I like the no-frills approach. The guy behind the counter was very friendly. I’m sure I’ll be ordering from here again.
