Feel free to read a response to Colleen C. on Urban Spoon. Unilocal doesn’t allow enough enough room for a response to a ridiculous«review» Thank you for the entertainment !

I have been a frequent customer at Mary Claire’s since its inception despite the unbearably slow service and«organic quality» pricing. On numerous occasions I have been shunned by the owner of the swanky May Claire’s possibly due to my less than chic attire. MYLASTSTRAW: After a long day I decided to stop in with my ten year old daughter for some soup and grilled cheese. She had been skiing and I had been driving so we both looked quite disheveled. We pulled in at 6:11 p.m. expecting to leave warm and full however we ran into unexpected rudeness. There was a bit of a line when we entered, three ahead of us(never a good sign at Mary Claire’s) so we knew we’d be in for a wait. The first party ordered food and proceeded to sit down. The second had a takeout food order. The third ordered sweets. Finally it was our turn, as I stepped forward to the counter the owner turned her back and blurted«I will be right back I have to get them their drinks». I have to admit that was quite irritating, to be spoken to with her back turn that is. We were ogling over the desert case when she came back and said, «What can I get you»? I looked up at the menu to re-read my choice when she interrupted with«the kitchens closed what can I get you»? The response shocked me, I replied«excuse me» and she repeated herself. So we re-entered our car at 6:27pm, 33 minutes before the posted closing time. My daughter is completely confused at this point and I was appalled, embarrassed and aggravated. I then had to explain to my 10 yr. old the old tale of discrimination. Not the Jim Crow type but the booshy Hamburg type. Cleary, if I had the vengeance in me I could file a suit and be owner of Mary Claire’s however, I believe in Karma and that the goodwill of people will prevail. Maybe not in our lifetimes but it must give at some point.

Have been here twice for lunch and both times got the Harvest Salad. It was really amazing! The brownies are pretty excellent too! The sandwiches and salads remind me a Globe Market. The Iced Tea is really fantastic too. I know that seems weird but I have had some terrible tea around here.

Last year a friend surprised me with a cupcake from Mary Claire’s for my birthday. Since that delicious treat, I had it in my mind to seek out this bakery the next time I found myself in Hamburg. Saturday, I found myself in Hamburg and therefore, in Mary Claire’s. As soon as we entered, a smile crept across my face. This charming store has a cute décor and more than just yummy edibles to offer. There are various jewelry choices, purses, scarves, as well as, cupcake themed items like lip gloss, ornaments, and stationary, for purchase. There are several small tables in the front and in the rear are(3) display cases full of sugary goodness. There was a rotating display case of pre-decorated cakes; a case full of cake slices, various bars, brownies, turtle cakes and baklava; and a case of cupcakes & candies. After much debate, we decided to try a strawberry cupcake with lemon icing and a pecan bar. Both were delicious and I was particularly impressed with the cupcake’s icing as it seemed to have real lemon zest in it– which made for a fantastic contrast with the sweetness of the strawberry cake and sugar crystals decoration. The pecan bar was not overly sweet and had a nice nutty flavor which was very good. While enjoying our picks, a family came in and picked out a «rotating» cake choice to take to a party. Mary was very quick to add some personalization of their choice. A gal also came in to pick up a pre-ordered baby shower cake and you could see the delight in her face when she was shown the creation. The entire visit was pleasant and the atmosphere was very cheerful. Mary and her staff do a wonderful job with the pastries and being friendly hosts. I can’t wait to come back and try lunch sometime and of course I won’t be leaving without some sort of sweet treat.
