Hackensack Market

One shop stop for everything hispanic you may need. They have a good selection of meats that aren’t commonly found in chain grocery stores (i.e. oxtail, tripe). They also have an excellent lunch counter that serves pretty good hispanic food (don’t ask me which).
I usually pick up some yuca frita and chicarrone to go when I shop here.

This place has everything «Spanish» that I can’t find at the Stop N Shop in Teaneck. Tons of Mexican items for my salsas as well as Dominican items. Great meat section as well. The prices are «ok». Not what I consider a bargain but if it saves me a trip to the city, it’s worth it. Highly recommend. Last note… awesome fish market inside as well.

Best Latin market around — and there are several! Good selection and prices — super convenient but if you come on the weekend parking is a quagmire. They also have a area dedicated to prepared foods.

Stop using the word sketchy… I hate it!
This market had everything you need! Great selection, Western Union, lots of rare finds, international foods, a hot food area (food was delicious $ 7 for a great portion of rice, beans and chicken) and pharmacy, great meat market and don’t forget to check out the insanely CHEAP little packs of tomatoes, onions, peppers etc that they put together for $ 1 – 2! They may have small spots on them but are totally fine and edible! The staff is also very helpful and friendly. Love that such a great market is so close to me!

When i first moved to bergen county i was in the midst of planning my fathers 70 th bday party which i was cooking For. I needed bijol for the rice. I went to shoprite in paramus (hoboken and north bergen shoprites both carry) i went to pathmark in bergenfield (weehawken carries it) and nothing. My bf suggested i try out hackensack market which is practically around the corner and upon walking in i felt at home. It reminded me of mi bandera or la roca back at home (in union city) needless to say i found my bijol amongst other amazing things that are very normal to see in hudson county supermarkets but not as common in bergen county chain markets, (think bocadillo veleño — arequipe alpina — gaseosa Colombiana). This is my go to spot for things on my shopping list that i know i will not find at shoprite Paramus and for fresh meats and seafood.
They also have a restaurant attached to it. Empanadas are Nothing really fabulous, I’ve had better, but we’ve ordered a few pernil (pork shoulder) from here and they’ve been excellent.

3.5 stars. Terrific meat selection, plus it has a pharmacy available.
The place is larger and much less sketchy than it appears from the outside. I would not have ventured in here if not for the recommendations by my Unilocal friends. That said, it’s still quite dingy, but I think they keep the store clean.
The meat selection is far better than Giant Farmers Market, but that was the highlight for me. Here’s my breakdown for which market-​type store I think is preferable in the area (here, Giant Farmers, and Maywood Market):
Meat selection: best at Hackensack Market, but not bad elsewhere.
Meat quality: about equal.
Prices: Hackensack Market or Giant Farmers.
Vegetable selection: Giant Farmers or Maywood Market.
Vegetable quality: Maywood Market, followed closely by Giant Farmers.
Grocery selection: Hackensack Market or Maywood Market. Hackensack Market is better for specialty items used in Hispanic countries. Maywood Market has more organic selections, but is also pricier.
Fish: Giant Farmers.
Prepared foods and desserts: Maywood Market.
Cheeses: Maywood Market, followed by Hackensack Market if you’re looking for specialty cheeses from Hispanic countries.
Breads: Giant Farmers or Maywood Market.
Experience and parking: Maywood Market (by a landslide).
What does this all boil down to? Obviously, I’ll be running all over the place!

Having been in here recently, I have to say they deserve another star.
The whole meat and produce sections have been redone. There is a large cased setup now for meat, its not hot, and theres no butcher smell really.
They sell even more cane sugar brand soda now, and again, thats not to be missed around here, most places dont like to let you charge one bottle besides big grocery stores.
They have apparently also updated their café to a more formal bakery, and added on a pharmacy. I’ve never seen a pharmacy at a place like this. Interesting. lol

I am surprised this small farmers market on Passaic Street doesn’t have more reviews.
In my opinion this market is at superior to Giant Farmers Market by River and Main.
Hackensack market, has an extensive selection of fresh, clean and great quality produce at very very good prices.
The market originally had a sub par butcher department with a funny smell always permeating from the area, but I am happy to say the management has cleaned up its act and the quality of the meat and dpt has improved 10 fold.
The market also has a Spanish bakery with prepared foods such as empanadas and fruit drinks.
One of the biggest perks is they have a very wide selection of sugar based Mexican colas, such as coke and sprite.
Best of all they have NO CREDIT CARD MINIMUM!
Great clean local market with friendly service and great products.
Def one of the best choices in the area next to Maywood market.
