Made a special visit here to get the knot cookies for my wife back home while on a visit to Grinnell this past weekend. Simple and delicious baked goods — a real treasure of a place for those needing a morning sweet fix! I wish the store had later weekend hours, but always manage to get there in time on my visits. Might be time for DMB to consider mail order! Love this place and their Texas cinnamon rolls!

Possibly the worst chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever tasted. They were hard, dry, stale, and bland. A package of Chips Ahoy would’ve infinitely been more superior to those chocolate chip cookies. They were that bad. I bought a dozen cookies, took one bite of one, made everyone else try one to make sure I wasn’t mistaken, and after receiving a consensus that Chips Ahoy cookies would be the victor in a taste comparison, I tossed the remaining cookies.

Danish Maid Bakery is an Iowa treasure, the best bakery anywhere as far as I’m concerned. It’s been family-owned for over half a century — the current owner/baker has been getting up every morning at 3am for decades to make sure everything is hot and fresh first thing in the morning. All-time favorite: Pecan Rolls. Gooey and cinnamony and soft — with two pecans always sitting right on top. The Texas Cinnamons, Chocolate Long Johns, Glazed Donuts, and Smile cookies are also amazing. And if you’re grilling out, you gotta get their hamburger buns. Don’t forget to grab a [school lunch size] carton of mile on your way out the door to help the pastries go down!
