According to Trip Advisor, visiting the Kilgore Lewis House is one of the must-dos for people visiting the Greenville area. My boyfriend and I checked their web site and discovered that while the house is primarily used for weddings and other functions, it is also open to visitors and tourists from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every weekday(this is actually not the case, as the house is closed on Mondays). We found the house locked when we arrived, and couldn’t rouse anyone with our knocking, so we ended up calling from the garden. A few minutes later, a very sweet, kind woman answered the door, quite surprised indeed to see us. We explained that we wanted to tour the building — and no, we were not getting married anytime soon. She agreed to give us an impromptu tour, but despite her best efforts, she did not know much about the house(i.e. when it last lived in, where the servants slept, what the rooms were used for, etc.). Though the house is on the state historic registry, it was moved from its original location and only one original furniture piece remains, so it is indeed very much changed. Halfway through our tour, which I must say I was enjoying, three ladies appeared saying they had a meeting at 11:45 a.m. for a wedding consultation. Our guide was really thrown for a loop at that point, but asked the group to join us on our tour. All in all, it was a very strange 30-minutes. «Random» was the word my boyfriend and I used to describe the entire scene.
