One of my favorite places to eat. The owners are always polite and generous. I feel welcomed every time I step in the door. The pizzas are tasty and filling. I always seem to catch the lunch special even when I am late. Always a familiar face. I can tell they take great pride in their business and appreciate their customers. This will always be my hometown spot.

Tonight was my first time eating here and I was nothing but impressed. The pizza was hot and delicious. I ordered a side Cesar salad and the dressing was very flavorful. My favorite thing about this place is the crushed red peppers… they have added something to it and I couldn’t put my finger on it but it was to die for. The only bad thing about my visit was the garlic knots. They were extremely dry and had no flavor to them, despite that I will definitely be coming back again! The staff was also very friendly.

Slices has been a favorite pizza/sub/pasta stop since they opened. Tony, the owner, always welcomed us and would occasionally throw in a complimentary Nutella Roll to our order. They have a variety of slices/toppings ready to go and it’s good pizza. However, I love their subs. They make their own bread, the ingredients are top notch, and the portion is huge. I recommend the chicken pesto sub! A great, local pizza place that’s worth checking out.

Ol’ Tony’s cookin’ up some pretty awesome pizza here, ordered one of the pepperoni Sicilian pizzas for take-out and that thing is a monster. He rolled it out from the back on a cart to put it in the oven. I’m not really a fan of thicker crust pizzas, but Tony’s Sicilian was really really good… but I’ll tell you something else that’s awesome here and that is this Philly Chicken«Sub», Subs are made on this homemade Panuozzo bread which is fantastic, the Philly Chicken is slam full of thinly shaved grilled chicken, melted cheese, grilled onionions, peppers & mushrooms with lettuce & tomato. This thing is the size of a football and just outstanding to say the least. Tony has a good number of different varieties of pizzas displayed on the pizza bar available for purchase by the slice, all of them look pretty amazing. This is a great spot with great pizza and great subs. Definitely a good option to get a bite to eat.

It was good. Not the best Italian food I have ever had, but for the price… Yummy. Great place to grab some quick pizza.

This joint is super convenient if you’re in College Hill and the pizza is GOOD. Not to mention, they offer some interesting slices. Want mac ‘n cheese on your pie? This is your heaven. They also offer a variety of desserts, at least one of which involves Nutella. The owner(Tony?) is almost always there when I visit, which I dig. It’s always nice to see a local business owner be super hands-on with day-to-day operations. The service is quick and friendly. The prices are friendly to any budget. I especially enjoy the white-sauce based slices. I do wish they had more outside seating, and there could probably be a little more ambiance. But once you taste the pizza, you won’t really care.

I went to Slices last night to try something new. The interior was very warm & clean. The employees were friendly & made ordering easy. My spaghetti with meatballs was really good. It was easily some of the best I’ve ever had. I liked the light parmesan added for extra flavor. The complimentary garlic knots with marinara were so good & I can’t wait to have them again. The salad was a throw away item, but the rest of the meal made up for it. Slices feels like the grown-up version of NY Pizza across the street. The next time I go, I’m bringing my foodie spouse to enjoy the garlic knots & more.

This place is great! I am in town for a district meeting and pulled up Unilocal for lunch options. Quick walk from UNCG’s campus and I was there. I called ahead to order. Food was ready and staff was extremely kind and friendly. I’ll definitely go again next time I’m in town! My ziti was awesome, and had enough to take home leftovers!

Tony is the man. Delicious pizza in many great varieties. Tony is always happy to see you when you come in and makes you feel really welcome. The white pie is amazing and the ricotta used is top notch. His thick pie is legendary, the crust crispy but tender. Don’t bother with that other pizza place on Tate unless it’s über late.

I placed a takeout order tonight directly with Tony, the owner. He was very helpful in making sure we had the right amount of food for our group. The order was ready for me when I arrived on time. The website was pretty easy to order from. I thought the pizza was excellent. The crust, sauce, cheese and toppings all were great! My only complaint was the Margherita pizza had very little basil on it. And the basil is a really key component to that pizza and it felt like an after thought. The restaurant is small but there are several tables to eat in or, as I did, pick up pies to go. They also have various pizzas set up to pick up pizzas, yes, by the slice! Makes sense as this is «Slices»! One pizza in the case had Mac n cheese on it… I was intrigued. Last but not least, It was raining a bit and a young employee graciously helped me with my pies to my car. I’ll be back!

The pizza here reminds me of heaven. Each bite I savor and at night, I yearn for more. I’ll never forget my first time here. There’s nothing like the first time. Think of the best pizza you’ve ever had. This pizza is even better. Juicier. Sweeter. More experienced. Sometimes I get emotional thinking about this pizza. I wonder about the slices I’ve never tried and what they might taste like. When I drive away from UNCG, all I can think of… is Slices. I will always love Slices. Each bite is heaven on earth.

Slices is a cool little pizza joint in the heart of UNCG… nice selection too… HOWEVER, never ever — let me repeat, never ever never ask the owner(old Italian man) what the special of the day is, because he cocks an attitude real fast stating«We don’t have any specials!!!» NOSPECIALS? What a dumb-ass marketing approach! So with that in mind: I’ve never been back… not that I’m looking for a deal on pizza… his poor piss personality can kiss my rebel ass! And this is the reason why he lost this customer… too many choices in town bro!

Pizza. It’s a nearly ubiquitous food stuff that can be found in the Triad. Almost to the point of being commoditized and traded in exchanges, our pizza has been following a staid, predictable path for far too long. Enter Slices by Tony, who has been sent on a mission not unlike Prometheus to bring fire, and pizza to us mere mortals. It is hard to describe the providence this gem has brought to Greensboro, but I will use what lowly words can be mustered. Slices is the creation of Tony, who has come to us after most recently owning and operating a pizzeria in Naples. Tony has located in a retail-kiss-of-death building on Tate St. near UNCG that in just a few years has hosted cup a joe, gate city noise, and a long stretch of sandwich joints and cafes that are barely an afterthought. Tony is already turning the tide with his authentic pies, outstanding pasta, fresh salads, enormous subs, and clever retoolings of what a pie can be. Recent reviews have mentioned a pizza war, but this is a disingenuous thought as the war has already been won. I will go on record that Slices is serving the best pies not only near UNCG, but pretty much the entire city. It really starts with the amount of thought and effort that goes into each item on the menu. The pizza can be prepared several different ways, but I would seriously suggest checking out the Sicilian style pizza. Tony has made a gold standard pie with a perfectly buttered crust, crunch, and toppings. At Slices you can order in a traditional way, with a whole pizza in various sizes, or a la carte. The counter you’ll see when entering the establishment serves as a cafeteria style pizza bar. It can fit about 12 whole pies, and during prime lunch/dinner hours you’ll find a full complement of pizza styles represented. Tony is constantly experimenting with new combinations. A recent favorite of mine is his pasta pizza. Slices made waves when they opened with a Mac and Cheese pizza. The pasta pizza takes the sauce, penne pasta, cheese and basil from their baked ziti entrée and places it atop a standard pizza. It’s an incredible tasting and filling piece of pizza, where one slice will suffice. Slices has also become notorious for their sandwiches. You can order their subs on a standard roll, but the star here is the panuozzo bread. Imagine the dough from a pizza folded over like a pita pocket and you’ll get a rough idea of the bread option. For scale, it’s about the size of your face. If you order it for your sandwich, it will take extra time for preparation, time well worth it. While you are waiting for your customized food, Tony offers free high speed wifi. There are also several macro beers available to sip on as well. Greensboro has many, too many, pizza options to choose from on any given day. Make the right choice by choosing Slices, and you’ll be amazed at what the Gate City can dish out.

Absolutely DELICIOUS pizza! We loved it and the staff was very nice and friendly. We also ordered this Nutella donut wrap thing and it was dangerously good! :)

I’m from NY. I say that, fully realizing how lame you probably think it is to start a pizza review with that. But it is true. And it does in fact matter. If it didn’t; there wouldn’t be a million ‘NY Style’ pizza shops from here to Wisconsin. I love this place. Sure, I’ve never seen anyone put Mac & Cheese on a pizza, so what. The pizza — every type we have tried — has been outstanding. It folds, it cracks, it drips. All that is missing to make this a perfect replica of my childhood in the Bronx are dirty floors, a Ms. Pacman machine, and Italian ice from Corona. Im glad there aren’t any dirty floors, I’ll keep my fingers crossed on the rest. Some people say ‘bad pizza is still pizza,’ and while that might be true for those who set the bar down there near their ankles, you can’t ever go wrong at Slices. Don’t pay 15 bucks for Dominos(or however much it is). Slices has good, actual pizza and it’s not expensive at all. Just go.

Super legit pizza. Take it from my S.O., born and raised in the 5 boroughs – this is the real deal. The crust is dead on, sauce is right, meats and toppings are great. Try the basic pepperoni pizza by the slice. I tend to think that’s the test of NY style place anyway, and this place passes with flying colors. There are also a variety of creative pizzas on the menu – some silly ones, like macaroni and cheese, but they seem to work. I’d like to try some of the sandwiches but I’m powerless in the face of the pizza, which tastes like being in the East Village. So great.

Okay-had a chance to try a bunch of their offerings over the past week thanks to Takeout Triad delivery! Regular Pizza Had their large and small regular pie – perfection. This place would stand up anywhere in New York City or the tri-state area. Tony, the owner, creates a slice where the dough on the bottom flexes, but doesn’t crack-yet is crispy then spongy where it meets the sauce – but it doesn’t soak in the sauce-perfection. The sauce – oh my word! The sauce is either fresh or else he’s using canned Italian tomatoes – top quality. The olive oil is probably in the sauce or below the sauce between the dough and sauce. There’s fresh basil. The Mozzarella is not wet or runny. It’s delicious. Not sure if it’s buffalo or cow but it tastes like home. The prices were reasonable $ 6.99 small and $ 10.99 large. Lunch special is $ 8.99 for a large. Meatball hero in home-made Italian(Panuozzo) bread is sublime. Panuozzo is a street food bread-with a similar start to pizza dough. You find it in Italy and you find it from time to time in New York area. I’ve had sandwiches with it before, growing up in Island Park, New York and also in Brooklyn and Manhattan. This is the best I’ve had! The sauce, like that of the pizza is fantastic; the mozzarella-incredible. The meatballs? Incredible – haven’t had ones like these. Giacomo’s does a good job but there’s no comparison. Beef and pork, perfectly moist but firm-they hold together. The meld with the sauce and cheese. The caprese salad was so fresh-even the lettuce. The tomatoes were cherry which went great with the mozzarella. Garlic knots had cheese and fresh basil plus a nice marinara dipping sauce. Had some mini cannolis — delicious and freshly made. Zeppoles were different; I’m used to a fried dough sprinkled with powdered sugar – an Italian Beignet, if you will, but a little more oily. These were that-but covered in a delicious limoncello sauce. Not my favorite but not bad. They threw in some Nutella bread-which is dough layered with Nutella-what could be bad? Finally they have Limoncello Cake – outstanding. I’d like to add another star for bringing me back to my childhood!

Slices is my go-to pizza joint in Greensboro. It’s a perfect lunch spot for anyone near UNCG. The owner, Tony, is super friendly and always looking to have regulars try out new creations. The décor is simple — fast casual you’d expect of any NY pizza spot. The design work makes you think it must be a chain, but it’s not. On any given day, the owner will most likely be the one tossing your pie crust. My favorite slice, which I got tonight is not on the menu — Tony calls it the bruschetta. It’s a deep dish, Chicago style pizza with bright, scratch-made tomato base, fresh diced tomatoes, mozzarella, and garnished with fresh topped herbs. You can’t go wrong with the house salad either. It consists of fresh crunchy lettuce and a pepperoncini/olive/vegetable mixture that has marinated in olive oil and herbs(imported from Tony’s hometown near Naples), all topped with a little feta and a simple yet delicious vinaigrette. Save room for dessert! Nutella pizza pie is simply divine. The bubbly hot crust covered in a Nutella based and sprinkled with marshmallows and brown sugar. YUM Other delicious menu items I highly recommend are simple cheese pizza, eggplant mushroom pizza, and fried dough bites.

Don’t know if there is really a «pizza war» on Tate Street but if there is I think we have a winner, at least to our satisfaction. This tiny little spot opened in the spring of 2013 at the spot at the corner of Walker & Tate which has been a restaurant kill zone for years now. These folks seem to have overcome the location’s problem. The shape is a narrow rectangle, with 8 or 10 small table on the left hand side, with the pizza display area & the counter on the right wall, and there are a couple of small tables at the outside front. There is not a lot of ambiance here, but there is definitely some warmth & character. They have 8 to 10 pizzas prepared and on display for you to choose from — like a cafeteria for pizzas. Some are the usual suspects(Cheese, Pepperoni, Veggie), others are more in the gourmet area, including a Mac & Cheese pie, and of course, you can forego that and order whole pies, pasta dishes, salads, and great sandwiches. Daily lunch specials include 2 large slices and a drink for either $ 4.99 or $ 5.99 depending on your choice of pie — and these are very well sized slices of pizza. We chose 2 couple of slices of Pepperoni, a Cheese slice, and a thick crust Veggie of sorts — cost of $ 11. As you would expect in an area teeming with students, the pricing is very reasonable. The Pepperoni and the Cheese were excellent, great sauce, nice crust, but a little soft. Next time, we’ll definitely have them heated up(a choice) rather than simply taken from the display area, and would request extra cheese, which is our normal order. The crust on the Veggie was thick, and absolutely delicious, the toppings were not as good — just too much garlic, smothered the taste of the veggies & the sauce. We also tried the Italiano Sub on their homemade Italian bread($ 7.99) and a small Original Stromboli($ 6.99), most of which we brought home with us for later consumption. The Italian Sub is awesome in the homemade bread. It is actually more of a wrap than a sub this way, but the ingredients are fresh tasting, plentiful, and the bread takes this sandwich to another level. The Stromboli was also very, very good, though a tad light on the meats, but the flavor is there, and the crust was perfectly cooked. The service here is efficient, friendly, and engaging — much improved over our experience down the street. We’ll be back for sure — want to pickup a whole pie, fixed to our specs, and probably another sandwich in that great homemade bread.
