This is a consistent NJ diner, open 24 hours and family owned. There’s only one diner I would rate 5-star. Although this isn’t it, this is a perfect community spot. Kind of like Cheers.

Not really that good. The corn beef hash was burnt. Bacon’s were probably a little more crispier than my liking. In general, an okay place.

I really like The Sunset Diner. I’ve eaten here a bunch of different times. The food is always fresh and tasty… The staff is very friendly, and the food is served quickly … The Sunset Diner offers a wide variety of food choices… They make delicious desserts and their coffee is always hot and fresh. My favorite is Taylor ham egg and cheese on a hard roll with a side of fries.(very jersey) Their burgers are juicy. The portions are a good size… The menu has a good mixture of Diner staples along with healthy choices and dinners… They are the only diner in the area that is open 24 hours. This place can get very busy around 2am… They do a really good job at this time of the morning serving people who’ve had a few… There is plenty of parking and they have takeout… I suggest you give them a try…

Everything was great. A lot of food for one person. Great service. But the breakfast eggs were served with cheese wiz cheese. Not happy about that. But everything else was top notch. Will come back.

Worst ever!!! They charge for every cup of coffee. Wait 25 minutes for eggs and home fries and not even hot!!! Ask waiter he response. Not my fault. Fail!!! Never again.

Do not eat here unless your taste buds have been surgically removed!!!-In fairness the diner is clean but dated(as are the customers) and the waitress was very nice– it is a shame she has to take the brunt of the grief when the tasteless slop is served. I had a turkey burger that smelled of freezer burn. My wife had the“special” chicken with portobello mushrooms that was clearly bad and unhealthy. Stay away!!!

Cold food, over cooked eggs, under cooked bacon bad coffee. Oh yes and the hash browns look like cat food. There must be a better place for breakfast. Oh yes and the exciting climax to this experience is Jamie and Steve barfing on each other in the back seat of my car.

The most bizarre and slowest service every time. Good pancakes but the waitresses need to lay off the meth.

We have been going to Sunset Diner for over 20 years and this is a heartbreaking review that I must write. We moved from the area 9 years ago and have been driving 30 minutes and passing 6 diners just because we thought their food was better than the others. The food and service were consistently good. For the past few months it seems like it has all changed… It started when we went for Sunday breakfast with our kids and it took 20 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us in our booth. 4 servers passed us, we tried to make eye contact and finally as we were getting up to go someone asked if anyone came by yet. She was lovely and took excellent care of us, even took the drinks off our bill which we didn’t ask her to do. So because of her and her kindness we returned a few weeks later with the kids. The person who sat us looked pissed that he was there, the server not only took forever to enter our order but it was messed up and many simple things were missing.(I was a server for years and understand the demands in a restaurant) but he only had one other table with one person at it. So sadly we gave it another try… Well this time was interesting to say the least… our server made it very clear that our need to place an order and have a few minor requests were cutting into her socializing time with her son who decided to come talk to her as we were giving her our order. SERIOUSLY!!! So my husband’s simple order not only was missing half of it but the potato pancakes were rubber disks I wouldn’t feed a goat(not the servers fault, she didn’t make them) then my son’s pork roll egg and cheese sandwich was a scrambled egg…(once again not the server’s fault) but when and why would they ever start scrambling the egg when it was always fried??? Then there was no inquiry as to how anything else was other than an annoyed over the shoulder glance. Once she was about to drop our check I pointed at the plate of potato pancakes and said they were inedible… but then it was too late to get anything else. The one nice thing she did was remove them from the check… good thing since only one bite was taken. So this leads us up to today… we thought since our take-out orders seem to be well put together that all would be ok… NOPE!!! They messed up a very simple order… not even anything complicated, something we ordered for years, Disco Fries with Mozzarella and gravy. And my Greek salad which was once abundant and awesome was lacking lettuce… or should I say crisp lettuce that wasn’t old slimy brown and limp. The chicken on my husband’s sandwich was impossible to chew because it was pure gristle. So now after all the issues of these past few months I am done with them!!! That was the final straw!!! I can only take so much! I will miss their cream of Turkey soup that I could eat daily. I hope anyone who read this through and chooses to go there, have a thick skin, be ready for many mistakes out of the kitchen and be patient. I hope this is just a phase and will end so they can return to the greatness they once were.

Interesting looking diner. Very odd. Told us a neopolitan shake sounded disgusting. We ordered silver dollar pancakes with bananas and a Texas bbq wrap. Pancakes were good, especially with bananas. The wrap is a favorite & that was good too.

Best diner ever. The owners treat you like family. Never had a bad meal and the staff are always prompt, courteous and great service.

I don’t go to diners for seafood, steaks, meatloaf, triple decker sandwiches or mile high pies. For me, there is only one meal to be had-Lox and onion omelette, well done home fries and rye toast with a good cup of coffee. I’ve had this very same meal at dozens of diners throughout New Jersey. From the horrifically bad to mighty fine. My meal of choice is prepared perfectly here for a good price. Everything is prepared the way I like it. I wish I could give five stars. But I can’t. On our two visits, there have been flies on the windows where we have been seated. This should not be. The presence of flies might very well gross out a customer. But I’m a pretty easy going guy. If I wasn’t, this would be a one star review. So, for me, great food, service and coffee adds up to four stars. Just ask for the«no flies» section.

I typically go to Sunset late saturday night/early sunday morning after I get off my late work shift. One thing I feel this part of central NJ is lacking, is 24hr service diners. Sunset, being one of them is a regular spot for me. On the side of Rt. 22 east, it has your traditional diner atmosphere. Booths and tables, counter with chairs, or the separate dining room. The servers here are generally very quick and friendly. The food is fairly decent, but inconsistent. You can almost tell who’s in the kitchen whenever you go. The greek salad is one of my favorites with the grilled chicken and pita. Don’t go in expecting amazing food, but it’s great if your hungry in the middle of the night or craving a rueben sandwich. Long live 24hr diners!

I have been here a couple of times, but after my most recent visit I will not be back. I visited this past weekend with my mom. We just wanted comfort food. I ordered the Philly Cheese Burger. It was actually pretty good, but when I order my hamburgers to be cooked Medium-Rare I do not want it to come out without any pink in the middle, but it was still juicy which just makes me think that it was sitting under the heat lamp too long. My mom ordered the Greek Salad. For $ 10.95 I would have expected a larger salad; it looked like a side salad placed on a large plate. My mom and I are big Greek Salad fans. We order them a lot when we go to diners. Never in all the years that we have been eating them have we been served Balsamic Vinegrette. It usually is served with a housemade seasoned vinegrette. My mom had asked for extra vinegar and oil on the side, which was never brought, When we looked for our waiter to get the oil and vinegar he had disappeared and another waiter in our section had asked my mom what she needed. He brought her the oil and vinegar and oregano to make her own Greek Dressing. When our waiter finally reappeared he asked what the issue was. My mom said that she didn’t like the Balsamic Dressing on the Greek Salad it was just too heavy; he gave her an attitude and was like«Well that’s what it is served with.» On our way out the owner/manager didn’t ask us how our meal was, or even thank us for coming. He ripped my mom’s debit card out of her hand, ran it through the machine and shoved the reciept back at her to sign it. For better salads I will go to the Golden Corner Diner in Bound Brook. For a 24– hour diner I will drive to the Union Plaza Diner on 22. It would be worth the extra distance.

this has been a go to hang-out place for my friends and I since we were in high school. their menu is easy to read… it’s not a whole book like other diners, so you don’t have to waste your time perusing every page. we mainly come here for their breakfast. the items are always delicious and have generous portions. they price isn’t bad either… you definitely get some bang for your buck here. the staff is friendly and attentive without being intrusive. even after you eat you can stay as long as you want… they’re not fussy about that. this has been a go to place for my friends and I when we need to have serious chat sessions. this place is huge too so if you need some privacy. you’ll definitely get it. i highly recommend this place if you’re around the area and if you’re looking for a delicious, cheap meal.

I met a business associate for lunch today. I wasn’t expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. The lentil soup was piping hot and tasted really good! My buffalo chicken wrap was pretty run of the mill but the fries were a golden brown. Our waiter was very nice and took good care of us. I never had to ask for a refill. The menu was huge and fairly priced. Soup, wrap with fries and a diet pepsi for about $ 10. I would go back.

Shopping on Columbus day and stopped in this Diner… After checking some reviews on Unilocal, most of them agreed that this was a typical«Jersey Diner experience» … No, this is not typical, it’s a poor imitation of what a Jersey Diner should be. Let’s just get one thing out of the way, I judge the cleanliness of a restaurant on it’s bathroom. Bathroom here was a disgrace, almost like walking on a ice skating rink to the urinal and back. Filthy and dirty, saving grace was the paper hand towel dispenser was full and I could wash my hands properly. The seating is broken up into a row of booths, diner counter and a dining room. Everything is pink and more or less clean, the dining room rug is truly something to see. Ordered some apps and diner special burgers… The app platter was a complete deep fried mess, the chicken fingers being the worst offenders. Not cooked all the way through and gummy. Everything was frozen and heated/fried, even the sauces where you are supposed to build you own potato skins. How can I build my own if the cheese sauce is barely warmed enough to pour? Really lazy. I had the M&M burger, this was probably the biggest disappointment out of the entire meal. How do you mess up a hamburger with mozzarella cheese and mushrooms? The quality of the meat was terrible and you can tell it was mixed and processed with fillers, pink and doughy meat. A heap of fries and some coleslaw with a pickle on the side was sorta like a side of insult to injury. This is not typical NJ diner, it is not even a truck stop diner food in an obscure part of the US… It is just a lazy, uninspired, sad diner that cuts corners on quality all around to grab some route 22 diners.
