Wong’s Custom Tailor

Nothing better than a Wong suit. Have at least eight of them and keep going back for more. Kenny just made my wedding tux also and if fit like a glove. Great guy, great tailor!

I’ve been going there for about 2 years now. They have great sewing skills and great pattern making skills as well. I’ve gone with a pattern that I couldn’t finish and they were able to do it fast and the outcome was very professional. I would recommend this place to anyone. It could be a little pricey but I think it’s worth it.

I have no idea why people have written terrible reviews about this place.
I originally came here because I needed a skirt hemmed and this was the closest place to work with great reviews.
It’s a Wall Street tailor so most of the clientele are men who need suits tailored, so I was a bit curious to see how they would handle this.
I read about the language barrier before hand but it wasn’t nearly as bad as people made it out to be. The man has an accent, yes, but this is New York City, in all fairness any New Yorker should be used to that. He spoke conversational English just fine. I told him I needed it hemmed, he had me try it on and stand in front of the mirror, and patiently went through my preferences to find the right length. He had a four day turn around, which is reasonable, and charged $ 15. I came back the day he told me to in the early morning and it was ready and wrapped, so no waiting until the last minute. You couldn’t even tell the skirt had been adjusted, and he did exactly as I asked.
So I went back with a dress that needed to be fitted, which was much more of a process than the skirt. He just as patiently went through the adjustments with me, explaining where he had to take the material from, and told me he wouldn’t be able to resew the back zipper on, and would have to replace it. I said fine, whatever he needed to do his work. I came back four days later, and not only had he fitted the dress, he was able to keep the zipper as well!
I think this place is great and would definitely recommend it. They’re very down to business but still professional. I’ll definitely be returning.

Kenny is a nice guy. But whoever made my suits and shirts are not so good.
Since I am writing a review on the clothes and not the owner — this is definitely a 1 star type of place.
I got some custom made suits made. I went back for fittings and what not, just as Kenny requested. Let me break it down easily for you.
Nothing fits well.
Too skinny
Too big.
No consistency in all the pants and jackets.
Extra fabric so you look like a fool.
Crotch area is weird.
Back of the pants has too much material.
Even the side by the pockets have so much material.
Don’t even get me started on the shirts. They’re all too tight.
You would think for a place that has been in business for years they would understand how to measure someone and actually sew properly.
As much as I like Kenny, I have to say, he did try to influence me into just accepting things as they were made. He would say «that’s how it’s suppose to look.» «It won’t look good if you change it.»
The problem I have with Kenny’s statements are that I knew another tailor in another state that would tell me the truth about my clothing and rip other tailors that didn’t sew well. So I knew he was lying.
Unfortunately, I was the one that got duped. I’ve lost out on thou$$$$ands of dollars here. Hopefully this review saves you time and money. Go somewhere else and potentially pay more. In the long run you’ll be saving money.

Good news — if you pay in cash you don’t get taxed. I’m pretty sure this is illegal though!

Mr. Kenny Wong made a very, very nice suit for my husband to wear at our daughter’s wedding. The suit fit beautifully, the fabric looked great, it was ready on time, and did not exceed the quoted price. My husband and I both found Mr. Wong and his staff to be courteous and professional.
Kenny Wong’s shop had done some excellent alterations for me on a woman’s suit, and I knew he was serious about making a garment fit well. I also knew that sewing is done in-​house at Wong’s, rather than being done in Hong Kong as so many other tailors in the city seem to do. My husband had some pretty poor tailoring done at one of the latter types of tailors, and I wanted to work with someone who was dedicated to producing a really sharp fit and who would be overseeing all stages of the suit’s construction. Mr. Wong quoted me a price as soon as I explained what we needed, and that was exactly what we paid.
Mr. Wong (he asked to be called Kenny) was great at helping my husband select fabrics, and also with recommendations about details like pleats vs. flat-​front, side-​vents vs. center-​vent, etc. My husband travels a lot, so scheduling fittings was complicated. I was impressed that the tailor gave serious consideration to whether it was possible to complete the garment and get the necessary fittings done in the time available. When Mr. Wong concluded that he could complete the suit in time, I believed him.
My husband said the suit was very comfortable to wear, and friends and family at the wedding told me how great my husband looked in the suit. I was pleased with the quality of the fabric, the expert sewing, and the excellent fit. I am happy to recommend Wong’s Custom Tailor based on my recent experiences with alterations and tailored suits at this shop.

It’s a New York tailor people!!! Sorry some of these reviews sound a bit damn Bridezilla’ish.
I have had a few things done here, winter coat arms shortened, suits adjusted, trousers adjusted. No issue. You pay, they adjust.
Price — well its Financial District. If you want a bargain, move, to, Queens.
There is a bit of a language barrier, but these guys speak the language of clothes, you point, you explain, they understand. Let’s face it, they are not there to be your best friend or proffer up dating advice.

Had 2 gowns hemmed and one skirt fixed. Extremely overpriced. Paid over $ 120…absolutely ridiculous. When I went to pick up the items, they had forgotten to hem the liner of one of the gowns, luckily I didn’t need the gown right away but this kind of mistake doesn’t exactly give the most professional image.

I got one of their packages, suit plus two shirts. The suit is fine, pretty good work. The shirts are horrible however. Shrank in the wash by a lot, and one melted a bit during ironing– clearly not cotton as advertised!

I will give you the facts and try to subdue my frustration as best as I can.
I had three suits tailored, no crazy work, total cost $ 965 (?)
To give you an idea of my preferred fit, I am 6’1, 180 pounds. I am a slim guy. I like my suits tailored slim and clean.
When I returned to pick up my suits, the pants bottoms had severe breaks when I asked for a very small, modern break on each. They argued with me that it looked well until I did wear one and co-​workers confirmed they looked like they were made for a mob boss. I took them back and got them fixed.
There was also one jacket that was not taken in enough. I asked them to take it in more and he debated that it would allow me to «sit with the button still on». So then why were the other two suits differently tailored if that was the goal? I am taking that jacket elsewhere to be taken in.
The point is, regardless of how you think it looks they will debate you to avoid further work.
I would not recommend Wong’s

Came in here on a Saturday, told the guy how I needed to tailor my shirt and he gave me a grumpy attitude. He told me $ 15/​shirt, and then he realized I also wanted the arms tailored since he wasn’t listening to me in the beginning, and quoted me $ 25 now. Told him I would take it somewhere else, and got more attitude. Maybe he does good work, who knows. but could use an attitude check.

AMAZING things happens here. I brought in 4 dresses.
1^st dress — shorten the length (cut/​hem bottom): easy enough, so it was well done.
2^nd dress — shorten the length (adjust 1.5 inch wide shoulder straps by cut/​hem): PERFECTION. Doesn’t look look or feel like anything was adjusted. the BEST.
3^rd dress — fix the ripped neck line (knitted dress and it was a special made so it was really hard to have fixed it.): AMAZING. As he had advised, the neckline doesn’t stretch anymore, but it was fixed as if it was never ripped!
4^th dress — the area between buttons on the chest part of the dress kept on opening up and you would’ve been able to see my chest if you stood on my side. They added 2 discrete buttons in that area of the dress, so I can wear it without being paranoid.
Total $ 80.
Worth every penny and I will be bringing my brother along to get his suits tailored here!

Needed three shirts taken in and the work was done quickly (dropped off Thursday evening, picked up Tuesday), priced reasonably (about $ 13 a shirt), and expertly done.

I had a blazer that was a gift taken in quite a bit.
Pros: Tailoring work is done exactly how they measure. They won’t give you much style advice, but they know how things are supposed to fit generally.
Cons: Pricing is pretty ridiculous. It cost $ 120 to have my jacket taken in. Granted there was a good amount of work being done, I asked how much it would be to simply take in a jacket (much less work) — they said still $ 120.
Won’t be coming back as it’s pretty cost prohibitive to have the tailoring be as much as a cheap blazer itself.

Wongs Custom Tailors is the best!!! read the reviews and decided to give it a try. brought my suit it on a friday and needed it on tuesday and they handled it no problem. the pants were $ 75, but they needed a lot of tailoring so price isnt too bad. great quality!

I brought a dress in here on a Tuesday, that I need by Thursday for a wedding out of state on Friday. The reviews online were good and it was close to my work so I decided to give it a shot.
Quality: The back of the dress was really difficult to tailor, but the men did an exceptional job. The dress fit perfectly and I got so many compliments that night!
Price: Resonable — $ 40
Service: Great! They were really accomodating to my tight schedule and they were really professional.

I brought in a pair of pants that was very badly ripped. When I picked them up I had no idea there was even a rip there to begin with! Wong’s is probably one of the best tailors I’ve ever been to. :)

i brought in my paul smith tux jacket to get taken in a bit (lost a few pounds since my wedding) and needed a quick turnaround. they completely took apart and reconstructed the jacket and it fits better than ever. i was expecting just an alteration to the chest (which is the most a less experienced tailor can offer), but they tightened up the shoulders as well — now it fits like my custom suit jackets. perfect.
not cheap, but they got it back to me in 2 days and it fits like a glove. i looked over every seam and it’s quality work throughout.

I had 3 suits altered here. They did good work, and fairly quickly.
Pretty expensive though… just taking a jacket in was $ 75 I think.

I have had custom shirts made by two other places, in addition to Wong’s. I first went to Wong’s to have a suit taken in. I had lost a great deal of weight. So I didn’t want to go to any old tailor. Wong’s was highly recommended by a colleague. So I brought my suit there, and they did a great job. As a result, I went there to have a few shirts done. Of the three places that I have had shirts made, Wong’s was by far the best.
The only down side might be that they are a bit pricey, but I can tell you this. I went there with a suit that I thought needed to be taken in, and was told that they were willing to take it in, but it really wouldn’t be worth the money. I feel like a lot of tailors would have probably just taken it in and charged me for it, without telling me that it really wasn’t worth it. So perhaps that’s the flip side of the higher cost.

Really nice little shop with super nice guys who really know what they’re doing and obviously expert tailors.
No idea why this place has such low ratings. I actually found this place via the concierge desk at a luxury building in the area. The guy said he sends people to Wong Tailor all the time and everyone comes back raving about it.
And while I wouldn’t RAVE, the guys at this shop really know what they’re doing. I had weirdly saggy and baggy pants and he told me just to simply pinch up the back and it was perfect. But warned it would be pretty pricy so I didn’t do it.
The shirts were awesome– he took in the sides and the top so it wouldn’t be poofy. And they were $ 20 bucks each, except one shirt he had to alter about 6 different areas (might as well get a new shirt right) cost $ 25. Still not bad for the quality, which was perfectly done.
They also do custom shirts that cost about 70 bucks each if you buy 8, and $ 280 for 3, with super high quality material of whatever pattern you want, quite a steal considering the only things that fit me now are $ 200 thomas pink shirts.
Anyway great shop, wonderful people, amazing quality.
