This ain’t the Ritz Carlton. But you knew that already. It is, however, the Outpostiest Motel of all. We love this place. Clean, cheap, hot shower, that’s all anyone needs. We went there with the kids and they liked it better than the more expensive Best Westerns and Holiday Inns because it was real. I don’t think you can do much better if what you want is no-frills.

I proposed marriage to the wife here, after we watched The Departed on DVD. We came back for the honeymoon. This is one of those rare, mom n’ pop ventures that’s a dying breed up on the northshore. Rustic, oldschool, clean, no frills, quiet, perfect. The proprietors were seriously nice people. I don’t think they expected that this would be someone’s choice for a honeymoon destination, but it was just our speed. I’ll leave manicured landscapes and cloying, superficial displays of care to the day-spa resort crowd. Home spun warmth is where it’s at. Give me a place with a a gravel drive way, safe, cozy, and clean but with a little bit of chipped paint here and there, a few weeds and a big, floppy dog running around. Give me a shower with hot, running water, some stones and waves, a fire pit, maybe some coffee and eggs, and a pair of hiking boots that fit and I’m good to go. Our suite was clean, bright, airy and functional. A beautiful spur trail 50 yards north will take you through a forested slot canyon to the Superior Hiking Trail. The beach across the street(hwy 61) is public access, so we always come down here for a nice driftwood fire among the smooth stones as we listen to the waves of our inland ocean lapping against the beach. I love it here.

I stayed here for a few days in July. The room was very small but I knew that going in. You get exactly what is advertised. Nice CLEAN room with no frills. Its located about 8 miles from Grand Marais and Highway 61 is great for bike riding to town, jogging, or a nice morning walk. A nature trail through the woods is right behind the motel. My only disappointment was the WiFi. It was very slow and not available much of the time. And cell service(mine is AT&T) was sporadically available if you went outside. It is what it is. The simple life for people who want to get away. Would I go back? Probably not because of the wifi issues. If they got that fixed, and they could with Dish Network, I would go back.
