Very generous portions. Standard Chinese American food but better than some of the other Chinese take out places I’ve been to. They have some more authentic Chinese dishes as well — like ma po tofu and there’s a few Filipino-Chinese dishes. Nice service. Will order here again.

Good lunch specials! So much food packed in a little container for a can’t be beat price.

Okay first and last visit. Went as a group from work and all ordered different items but all items came in the same brownish thick sauce. Very bland and tasteless. You do get large portion sizes but the taste is not worth it. Save your money and go elsewhere!

Not sure how this place is getting good reviews. One of the worst chinese food experience our whole family has had. Everything was bland. All three main entrees were basically the same sauce. The chicken sticks were extremely dry. We seriously threw out almost all of the food($ 75 worth!) Pot stickers were horrible, deep fried, and doughy. Please don’t waste your money here.

Glenview has a handful of takeout options to choose from if you happen to be itching for a Chinese food fix. I usually order from Chinatown Kitchen on Waukegan since I live within 5 minutes of them but today, I decided to give Red Star a try after reading positive reviews. I took advantage of their lunch specials which run around 5 bucks and ordered 2 mongolian beefs and one General Tso’s chicken. Had I known that one portion was enough to feed two adults, I would have ordered less food. I expected to eat one of the meals for lunch, then have another for dinner later. Upon pulling up to the restaurant, my hopes weren’t all too high since the storefront looks a little sketchy. However in my experience, it’s always the less visually appealing restaurants that have very appetizing food. Nevertheless, I picked up my food and quickly left. The weight of the bag was definitely enough to give my arms a workout. I came home and began to dig in. The portions from this place are absolutely MASSIVE. I usually have no problem eating chinatown’s lunch specials in one sitting which are also of decent size but redstar beats out chinatown based on size alone. The chunks of chicken in my general tso’s were massive, hot and crunchy and I was full after only a few bites. As far as fried rice goes, it was pretty decent. Perhaps a little on the dry side but nothing truly out of the ordinary. The only complaint that I have is that it was a little overly salty for my tastes. I’ll be sure to ask them to go light on the salt the next time I order. My chicken also seems to have been swimming in oil which I could taste even through the sweet and spicy sauce. Not very appetizing, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. I had to throw the rest out because I got a horrible stomach ache later. The egg roll also had an off texture to it, kind of powdery and chalky, as other reviews have noted. Not much flavor in it either but again, a very large size. I was pleasantly surprised by the mongolian beef. I like mongolian beef with lots of onions and this place does it just the way I like it. I like that it wasn’t as salty as my chicken, just the right amount of flavor. The sauce was also a little thicker which I liked and the meat was nice and tender. Overall, If I order again, I’d order this. All in all, I’d give red star another shot. Will I frequent it over CTK? Probably not but only because it’s a little further from me and the prices are exactly the same. I will definitely give them another chance though because maybe I simply ordered the wrong dishes.

I’ve been here several times… but never again. I ordered for delivery, I live 10 minutes away. After an hour of waiting I called to inquire when the food will arrive. They said it was«almost ready». 30 minutes went by I called again and they said that they may need to remake the order. They didn’t need to bother because I cancelled my order. No restaurant should take 90 minutes to make my food. Never again.

I can’t begin to understand why this place rates well. The restaurant/take-out is dirty, the service is slow, and the food is no better than average.

Basically a take-out counter — although there is a table with a bench and two chairs. This is definition of no-frills, but I thought the PepperBeef-Tomato was very good and the portion was huge.

Very to below average food. It had no flavor. I like my Chinese food spicy and even though I did ask for my dish extra spicy it just had no flavor. Our other dish was equally bland. Maybe it’s toned down flavor works for the masses but not this Unilocal guy.

This place was legit. My wife and I ended up getting kung pao shrimp and sesame shrimp along with vegetable fried rice. One of the things that worries me at certain places is when seafood has a fishy odor to it. That was definitely not the case here. The food tasted fresh and was very good. Will definitely go back to this place again. Have had bad luck with chinese food in the northern suburbs but just found a new go to spot. Best part also is HUGE portions for the price.

Beats having to drive to Chinatown for great fried rice! Super sweet staff as well! I usually call in a takeout order of the beef fried rice and they are very consistent with their food, they are also very generous. Winning combo!

This is your standard Chinese take out. Food is tasty, portions generous, and prices reasonable. I took home: Singapore Mai Fun, aka Singapore Noodles: Nice version. But omg – for 7:95 the portion is enough for 4 hungry adults. They should offer a half portion for 4:95. Seriously, Redstar, if you’re reading this. Garlic Pork with Fermented Black Beans: Tasty dish, but I believe it was pork belly. I would have preferred a leaner cut. At the very least, they should say in the menu description that it’s pork belly. The impact of the fermented black beans is subtle, as a warning to those expecting a taste explosion. And also, this is one of those Chinese dishes where there is too much meat, relative to the veggie component. For my preferences, I won’t order this again…

I had high hopes after finding this place on Unilocal.Despite the restaurant’s high ratings, it was a bit of a let down. While the employees were very kind and friendly when I went to pick up my food, my food was just okay. My sesame chicken was stringy which made it extremely difficult to eat. My crab Rangoon seemed a little off as if they had used too much of one ingredient and not enough of the other. I will say that portions are very generous so hopefully it was just an off night.

When I want a very inexpensive Chinese meal fix to take home, this is my «go-to» destination. It ain’t a pretentious eatery, but it sure is cheap — just like me. Red Star Restaurant is really not a restaurant: it is a take-out place. When you enter the establishment, you will be amazed by the ugly looks of the place and the fact that the heating does not work during the winter, and the air conditioning is an analogous joke(I recall that their AC unit belches out hot air during the summer!). There are two scrunched-up tables stuck in a corner which are rarely inhabited by man or beast. As you enter, there is an enormous«War and Peace» length menu posted on the left wall.(The Great Wall of Glenview?) Folded paper copies are found on the counter, which is all scratched up and probably as old as some of the magazines they have in the waiting area next to the front window. Their waiting area consists of a few wobbly chairs and a table that includes the entire output of thumbed-through Chicago Tribunes. The more recent newspapers have informed me that some dude called Dewey(methinks a nephew of Donald Duck) has defeated Truman, some guy called Lincoln was shot, and some fellow walks on the moon. Anyways, after you walk in, you need to ding the bell on the counter and somebody will respond — and NO, the person is NOT Pavlov’s dog. If you can get there before 3 pm, you can order a very complete and satisfying meal, usually in the $ 5 range: they offer about 25 choices. You have a choice of vegetarian or pork egg rolls and either steamed or fried rice. If you get there after 3 pm their dinner menu applies, and they have dozens and dozens of entrees and boxed meals to choose from. Next you pay and luxuriate in their charming waiting area next to the front window. You can look at the fashionable beer and cement truck drivers cruising Greenwood Road, read the latest periodicals(see above) and/or veg out(usually 10 – 15 minutes) for your meal to be prepared. Of course, you may phone ahead, and avoid this fascinating experience. But finally, your meal comes — and it is very, very good and tasty. The food is fresh, nutritious, and a pleasure to consume. The meal is served in a clamshell container, and it is really enough for two adults. Indeed, I usually share my meal with somebody, or I save half for the next day. Despite a tad of sarcasm, I really like this place, and I plan to continue patronizing the Red Star Restaurant. Heck, anyhow, I want to sit down on one of their window seats and find a newspaper that tells me how well Huey and Louie fared against Truman.

THE absolute best Chinese food you can get for these low, low prices! Love! I was a little disappointed with the Mongolian beef, which is usually my favorite. Here, it is loaded up with onions at about a 3 to 1 ratio. I prefer more beef. You will see me again!

We’re in a hotel. We ask the concierge for the name of a place that delivers to the hotel. He thinks for a moment, and hands us a Red Star menu. It’s extensive, and there are an enormous variety of selections, including lower-carb and low cholestrol choices… vegetarian… but none specifically vegan. Ok, well, we looked and looked and knowing that such menus might be the result of a sales effort on a restaurant’s part rather than a genuine recommendation, we tried a couple of normally safe samples– vegetarian mu shu and kung pao beef– with some pot stickers. They were uniformly at the top of the list. The only downside was: insufficient mu shu/wonton wrappers, but it’s a small complaint. It made us want to try more. Delivery was as described and they put in plentiful plates, napkins, and plastic forks– perfect for hotel room use. It was good enough and flavorful enough to make us keep the menu for subsequent trips. I wondered if we were just starved and that was the motivation, but the next day, the leftovers were as-good or better.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover! Never posted on Unilocal before but I love to use it so I thought I would run to the rescue for this place! This is the best chinese food around man! The place looks forbidding but the old man in the kitchen can cook!

The storefront looks a little sketchy, but due to the reviews here we decided to check it out. I’m glad we did because we now have our new go-to Chinese restaurant! My husband ordered the fried chicken wings as an app and I got the crab rangoons. Both were delicious and the wings had a curry flavor to them which was a great twist. We then got the Hung Sue chicken and the Shrimp in Garlic Sauce. Big portions(which means plenty for leftovers!) and tasty food. We’ll be back!
