This place was awesome, the customer service was great! You could get up close to the animals and actually see them and you could feed some of the animals as well. It’s not a huge place and doesn’t have any food stands or a wide variety for snack food. They have a gift shop but it’s more for young children. They have giraffe feeding everyday 11 and 2pm, which costs 3 dollars I believe!

At most zoos you are lucky to even get a glimpse of an animal, but at Hemker that’s not the case. This is a great place to get up close & personal with a variety of animals! If you make a trip out to Hemker Park & Zoo, you MUST visit the bird house! They sell bird feed on a stick at the register, then you walk in to the bird house & the birds literally come by the dozens & land on the stick, your arm, shoulder — it’s so cool! They also have a picnic area, so definitely bring a lunch, as well as a playground for the kids. We love this place!

this place is really cool and a must see. it is not a big fancy zoo so you don’t have all the fake trees, ice cream stands, etc, but that’s what makes this place so cool. you get to see the animals up close rather than back in the distance or through plexiglass. the animals are well cared for, and kind of neat that they all go to Florida for the winter. you can even just drive by on the road or ride by on your bike and see some of the animals — now what corporate zoo would let you see the animals without going through the admission gates? big zoos have their place and I love the giraffes and more exotic animals you won’t see here, but this place is a must see — you could even see it as a side trip riding the lake wobegon bike trail as it’s only a mile outside the little city of Freeport.
