Vinyl Acres is one of the best-kept secrets in Frederick. My fiancé and I stumbled across this rare gem while walking downtown one Sunday in the fall of 2015. Compared to The Record Exchange on Market Street, it’s hands-down the best place for vinyl aficionados in the Spire City. First off, the staff: Down-to-earth, friendly people who genuinely love what they do. They know their stuff, and can always be counted on to answer questions about music and records. The selection is leagues above The Record Exchange. Rather than organize by genre, Vinyl Acres arranges their records in alphabetical order, and they actually have music most people have heard of. In the half-dozen times we’ve gone in there, we were always able to find something to walk away with. In fact, we’ve been guilty of buying $ 80 worth of records on at least one occasion! Sure, The Record Exchange is larger and is easily accessible. But I would much rather have a smaller, out-of-the way store where the staff actually takes the time to converse with you and is more than willing to help you find that elusive treasure. Market Street may be where the crowds are, but Vinyl Acres is where the action is.

I’ve only had the honor of stepping into this exquisite establishment once(so far), but it is a fantastic place to inhabit whilst looking for vinyl to add to your collection. I stopped in on Record Store Day this year, and although they had nothing going on related to this annual event(aside from a 10% discount, I think), I completely enjoyed browsing through their wares. I think they had nothing RSD related because of the store’s small size. it’s located in the basement of a building in downtown Frederick, and I almost missed it. but thanks to a sandwich board in front, I wandered in. the owner(I didn’t catch his name) is really friendly and it’s obvious he absolutely loves what he does. he puts a lot of care in the organization and labeling of his records(note: only records are sold here and, by design I believe, nothing newer than the mid-1980s). they are carefully alphabetized and sorted. he is willing to give advice, help you find something, or just chat music with you. a perfect indie record store. I cannot say enough good things about it. this is everything(and more) you would want an indie record store to be. unless you’re looking for music after the mid-1980s.

It’s clean and well organized, and the owners seem cool. But the selection is weirdly limited. You’ll find almost no music released after 1985. Vast categories of music are conspicuously absent. Indeed, it’s like an alternate universe where punk, hip-hop, and electronic music – and all that’s flowed from them – never happened. There’s plenty of folk-rock, jazz fusion, prog, classic 70s rock, soul /classic R&B, and early 80s radio rock, plus a bit of early 80s metal and the odd soundtrack. If that’s what you’re into, you’ll probably dig it. But I have no idea who is buying all these meticulously organized Foghat and Wings and J. Geils Band albums in 2016.

This is a great record store with a ton of selection. I have gotten so many fantastic finds even from the bargain bins! The owner is great, really friendly and gave me additional discounts simply because I bought more than a few. Plus knowing that all the vinyl is guaranteed makes all the difference!

A cute new record store in historic Frederick. Great finds in both vinyl and CDs. The owners are talented musicians who were part of bands in the DC area back to the 70’s. Also they have started an in-store concert series that allows you to hear great music in a super cozy and intimate setting.
