I love the Trail House. Every time I go to Frederick I make it a point to shop there instead of the REI in Rockville. The staff are very friendly and thoughtful and I find that they have great sales — things that never go on sale at REI, you can sometimes find at the Trail House significantly discounted, especially towards the end of the season. I prefer the ‘mom and pop’ feel of the store and the employees are knowledgeable and helpful.

Really well thought out products. It’s a great feeling to shop locally and you can get most outdoorie stuff there. So I like to stop in here first before I look at the other bigger chains. Helpful staff.

Great staff, very friendly and helpful. They just exchanged a year old pair of water shoes that had a defect. They could have referred me to the manufacturer, but helped me out instead. My family will continue to do business with them. Thanks Trail House!

I received a pair of shoes from this place for my birthday. Needless to say but they were not my style so with receipt in hand I travel all the way to Frederick. I was greeted pleasantly and made the sales associate aware of my return. She informed me that only a store credit was available. I am not local to this store nor did I like anything stocked there so I asked to just credit the gift givers card. This was not possible is what she told me as he paid cash. Cash? I asked for cash then. She became rude and said all that she could do was a store credit. As I said I did not want anything there as I am a loyal REI member. She responded that they have similar things«just like REI’. Well I can tell you what they do not have that REI does– good customer service. Avoid this place, its not user friendly. Over priced and rude. Bad combo.

Honestly I can’t speak too much to the selection nor pricing of The Trail House. I went in with a mission and the staff was more than helpful. I needed a pair of socks that I could wear in my ultimate cleats while playing in snow for hours. The staff was quite helpful in describing their different options, and I ended up going home with some PhD Smartwool socks. The prices on those was the same as Amazon’s, which to me is always the gold seal of approval on pricing. The base of my experience though was the customer service. I walked into a store knowing nothing about any of their products, and was helped to exactly what I needed by friendly staffers.

Went to the Trail House this afternoon for some minimalist trail running shoes. Received stellar customer service! The man who helped me was very knowledgeable and helpful. I got to try on several pairs of shoes, and they even have a rock you can walk on to sample the feel of a hike. I LOVE the shoes he recommended(we went with altras) and I am very happy with my purchase. I’m new to the area and he also recommended various trails to try and even went so far as to show me a map. It’s a very cool store– it does remind me of a little REI! I went in there strictly for shoes but they have a large variety of clothing and outdoor gear. Would definitely go back!

Great customer services. They are willing to help you in anyway they can. I appreciate they offered discounts every once in a while. I have bought few shoes and other items from them. Nice little store in downtown Frederick!

We had one goal so that is what I’m rating Trail House on: getting a pair of Vibrams. My husband’s foot fell between sizes so he was given a pair of each size and(after running through the store) he figured he liked the smaller size. Then he had to find the right style… Then laces or straps? Through it all, the salesperson was super nice: no pressure, just guidance. When we went to pay she told the cashier to take 10% off since all Vibrams were going on sale in 2 days: SWEET! AND they have Injinis(toe socks) for those who don’t like nekkid feet. (Side note: unless you are reordering a pair you already have, don’t try to order Vibrams online. You really need to test them out and make sure you have a glove-like fit. Trust me, I made that mistake and that’s how we ended up at Trail House.)

I try to hit the Trail House whenever I’m in downtown Frederick, and I always enjoy it. I can’t say I’m a great customer as I’m usually not shopping for anything specific. They jam a lot of items into a small space, and offer a wide selection at that. Sure, the prices are a bit more than you could find online but supporting local merchants is well worth it. Plus, there are deals to be found there. They had a sale on Smart Wool skiing socks which I almost bought for my sister and brother-in-law for Christmas(despite it being July), but they didn’t have the correct size. I couldn’t imagine Frederick without the Trail House, and look forward to my next visit.

A staple of downtown Frederick for years, Trail House has always carried a decent selection of hiking supplies. Granted it’s a little more than the cost of going to a surplus store or a chain outdoor store(like REI) course it costs more to do biz downtown Frederick. I got some pretty good deals down there, and they are more knowledgeable than most of the retail shops in the area when it comes to outdoor sports.

Like Joe said in his review … plus there’s always something great on the clearance rack. Today’s find was a pair of fleece windstopper gloves for $ 5 …

Frederick’s independent hiking/outdoor store. Like a small version of REI or HTO without having to leave downtown Frederick and travel south. Shoes, clothes, gear, maps, etc. Staff is always friendly and while the volume of merchandise may not be huge, they are carefully selected to cover most of your needs. I usually find what I’m looking for and like that I can support a good local business and not have to drive 30 miles for my gear. The store is well organized and not overstuffed(if you’ve visited HTO in Gaithersburg you know what I mean).
