A bridge with a roof There are a whole lot of covered bridges in New England, the state of Vermont alone has about 114, and Maine, Mass and Connecticut also have their share. But for some reason Rhode Island lost all of it’s covered bridges by 1920. New replicas have come and gone so the exact number of covered bridges in the state is open to debate. But the only covered bridge that actually goes over a public road is without doubt the Swamp Meadow Bridge. This bridge is a forty foot replica of a covered bridge that was originally built at this location in 1820. The first replica was built in about 1992 by a groups of volunteers from donated local lumber but unfortunately some local morons immediately vandalized and burned it down. But not to be deterred the volunteers got together and built a new one. The new covered bridge was finished in 1994 and still stands today, a lovely little bridge that is a reminder of times past. The bridge isn’t as impressive as many of the ones in VT or that Richard R., the master of the covered bridge review, is visiting and reviewing down in GA. But it is the only covered bridge still in use over a real road left in the state. And that makes it very special.
