Here’s the Night Riders gist, as I see it: A few people, sometimes it’s a handful, sometimes(on ultra-nice days) its 80 people, meet up at the Chat Room on Sundays and Wednesdays to do a little bike riding — at night, as the name implies. And you can imagine with that amount of variability in how many people show up, how fast or far they go can be pretty variable. I’ve probably been about a dozen times over the last 3 or 4 years, and I think every ride was different in pace, distance, and vibe, so in a way it simply defies a detailed description. For a while, they were splitting off into an «A» and«B» group, which was my favorite couple of times, but they don’t do that anymore. But no matter what, it’s a no-drop ride, which means they promise not to leave anybody behind. You’ll never be the last person, because they have a designated person whose job it is to be the last person and to keep the back end company. And no matter what, people are pretty friendly and just want to go for a bike ride. Sundays are a pub crawl-ish ride, with the rule of thumb being«one and done» at 3 or 4 stops around our fair burg, and Wednesdays are generally done at longer stretches, 15 – 20 miles or so at a time. But they’ve been doing it for a few years now, and as I understand it haven’t missed a single ride in what’s now over 500 rides — rain, sleet or snow, and passing leadership around as required to keep it going. Pretty sure that qualifies them as an institution if anything does.
