Carniceria Garcia is a small Latin American grocery store located next to the perpetually awesome Golden Gate Chinese restaurant on Jonesboro Road. This review is for the small taqueria inside the grocery store. First off, holy tortas batman! Carniceria Garcia offers 20 tortas on the menu including 10 house specialties such as the: Cubana, Hawaiana, Tapatia, Toluqueña, Española, Chilanga, Norteña, and Sureña just to name a few. When faced with a bewildering selection of equally appetizing entrees at a restaurant that I am certain is not going to suck, I do what I always do: I just ask the waiter or in this case, the cook, to bring me whatever their favorite is. I sat for a little bit tapping my foot to the infectious Cumbia music playing in the background and trusted my lunch to the knowing cook and his well oiled plancha. The torta Cubana arrived about as no frills as you can get: wrapped in foil, cut in half, and sitting on a foam meat packing tray. The soft bolillo was piled high with lettuce, avocado, tomato, ham, marinated cescina, Mexican crema, jalapeño, and slivers of hot dog. The latter struck me as strange and I honestly didn’t eat much of it but it’s also not the first time I’ve seen hot dogs and other mystery meats show up in TexMex food so I just went with it. The torta was an explosion of welcoming flavors, especially when drenched with casera style hot sauce from the squirt bottle on the table. Naturally, I am going to have to keep going back until I have tried them all…
