Who cares what the place looks like inside, you order Chinese food for TAKEOUT geniuses. I also cannot stop laughing at the woman’s review that China buffet is a better option, are you high? Maybe you are and that explains your review. Best Chinese food just shy of Wongs Café in St Paul on Rice st. Just get the chicken fried rice and chicken chow mein and egg rolls, that is it… those 3 items are the best of the menu.

Horrible bland food. Possibly the worst Asian food I’ve ever eaten. Stick with the Joy Garden or China Buffet.

They have really good food and great prices. Just don’t order the egg rolls, they are horrible tasting!

I’m from the Pacific NW and let me tell you that this is by far the worst Chinese food I have ever had. My family ordered carry out and had the Mongolian beef, general and sweet and sour chicken. It was hard to tell the difference between each entrée due to the fact that all had the same gravy like sauce. Please work on your sauces and make them proper for each dish! Most likely will never order from here again.

The ambience is a little shabby and dated but it’s all about the food here. Best fried rice and egg foo yung and we’ve had in many years. For those of you remember an old Minneapolis institution I would describe the chow mein as“ala-Nankin”. Large portions, low prices and the fortune cookies are never stale.

Only have eaten here a couple times but always left satisfied. Reminds me of Chinese restaurants of 30 years ago.

Food is authentic and the greatest Mandarin in the world! Disregard the dated interior and the staff, but the food is worth it. I know the owner personally, lovely woman!

I love Asian food from hole in the wall places, as long as it tastes good. We’ve only ordered from here one time, but we ordered multiple items so we could get a good idea of the quality. Everything we ordered was bad. Everything tasted like it was a few days old and had been microwaved for service. I don’t expect a lot from hole in the wall restaurants, but I expect the food not too taste like it was prepared and then microwaved and served after it’s shelf life had expired. Never again.

We take-out ordered orange chicken and sesame chicken. I could hardly tell the difference. There was no flavor at all on the orange chicken. I had to use my own sauces at home to give it flavor. The service was just ok. Don’t ask questions about the food. They’ll put it down right away on your order and you’ll spend the next few minutes trying to get them to remove it. «What is Szechuan chicken – is it spicy?» «Yes, ok, one order of Szechuan chicken.» That happened multiple times. Having only tried orange and sesame chicken, I can only speak to those dishes. But if a Chinese joint gets those quintessential dishes wrong – very wrong – it probably says something about their other offerings. I really don’t recommend this place. At all. Drive 15 minutes north to Tasty Asia, or south to someplace in Hugo.

I don’t know what these other reviewers are complaining about with their reviews. This place is not billed as a Michilin Star Chinese restaurant, it is run down and old, but the food is great. Sure, not everything is authentic but I wouldn’t call it «americanized» it’s great. If you go into it knowing it is an older restaurant owned by a Chinese family that know something about their cuisine, you will enjoy it.

They have great authentic Chinese. I really like the food. The main hostess can be a bit on the ride side and the dining room badly needs to be refreshed. But, for take out it is fantastic.

The grossest Chinese food I have ever ate in my life! The chicken was brown and noodles were soggy!

Their site mentions cooking since the late 70s. Unfortunately, that is what my egg rolls tasted like– that they had been laying around since the late 70s. I love egg rolls and was really looking forward to some, but was REALLY let down. They looked soggy. As soon as I bit into it, I knew it was going to be terrible. I spit it out, looked at the inside of it which looked like rotten icky brown cabbage. Worse egg rolls I have ever tasted. Their pork fried rice wasn’t as tragic as the egg roll, but wasn’t spectatcular by any account. Ordered some won ton soup hoping to cure my cold. It was ok. The broth was meh, and the wontons had a strange taste to them like they had been dipped in sesame oil. Not my favorite. Décor is very old– needs a much needed update perhaps to match the vibrance in the online pictures. This place was really dissapointing on many levels.

Disappointing boring american style Chinese food. They get 3 stars cause they had actual chow mein, not that american kind. I really wanted family style Chinese vegetables(e.g. Chinese broccoli, baby bok choy, or any choy) I wish there was some more steamed dishes like fish with green onion. I love true Cantonese food!!! I think walnut shrimp is a must have on every menu and it was missing here. My tea was also not green. It would be awesome to have more authentic food!

We pulled into the parking lots and had second thoughts. It looked a little run down and boring from the outside. We had a 20 month old with us and didn’t know if we wanted to experiment with this rather shabby-looking establishment. I looked and Unilocal and the reviews were mostly positive so I thought we’d give it a try. The bad: smells a little musty — old décor and serving dishes made this place seem a little less trendy than it needed to be. Even the bathroom used the old ‘cloth towel crank” system I haven’t seen in use for more than a decade. Water tasted a little like chlorine. Ordered two beers(they only offer two beers) and after thinking they didn’t quite taste right we looked on the bottles and noticed they were 3.2% beers(in Minnesota, the only beer you can buy at a gas station or grocery store and the only type of beer available to purchase on a Sunday. Google it… MN has some weird alcohol rules) The Good: Friendly service, accommodating waitress with a sense of humor, some local regulars, and familiar menu. They have a vegetarian section listed on the menu and the restaurant starred each of the menu items with the explanation«contains chicken broth» written underneath it. HAHA! We had a good laugh! I ordered some Generla Tsao’s chicken and asked the waitress to have the cook make it «as spicy as possible». About 30 seconds later I heard the waitress yelling at the cook and telling him«THISGUYSAYSYOUCAN’T MAKEITTOOHOT!» through the kitchen window. The portion size was generous and quick. Fresh vegetables, excellent meat, and a big helping of rice all served in an eclectic 20 year old serving dish with a little can of sterno to keep the stuff boiling until well after it is served. NEAT! The sour cream won-tons were wonderful and fresh, and the dipping sauce had a strange consistency but it seemed like it might have been made from apple sauce and strawberry preserves. EXCELLENT! Our 2 year old totally dug it. The price is incredibly reasonable. Two meals, two beers, and an appetizer was $ 28 minus tip. Each of the meals was around $ 8. Cheaper than crappy take-out Chinese food! We left with full stomachs, a fat wallet, leftovers in a to-go container, a happy baby, and a happy wife praising me for finding this little unusual gem hidden away in the little town of Forest Lake. We are now fans!

If you have not tried this before, it is worth the trip. In-house dining experience is not excellent, but when the food arrives you will understand. ORDER to PICK-UP in 30 min and you get significantly more of this amazing, authentic, food. BESTINMN.

hello folks!.today i am having lunch, at this chinese place, over in forest lake, used to be a country kitchen restaurant, as the outside design of the building, is a dead give-away.The décor inside is alright… comfortable booths, friendly service, a decent menu. On the walls, are chinese pictures. i had the orange chicken dinner special, for $ 6.90…it came with pork fried rice, and cream cheese wontons. the food itself, was o. k…not bad, but it tasted bland… americanized chinese food, with no spiciness at all. the interior of the restaurant, was was pretty empty, when i arrived for lunch, around 11:30 in the morning. they have a take-out menu, and free parking. sadly to say, there are many better chinese restaurants out there, than this one.
