I went to Café Maffei with friends and family for my husband’s birthday. The Oregonian had recently reviewed them and highlighted their occasionally occuring«Ukranian Food Week,» during which they switch from Italian food to, well, Ukranian food. Between the eight of us we had just about everything offered, and our overall reaction was mixed. The borscht we all agreed was great, but everything else is really up to each individual palate. Don’t skip the dessert if you go-they offer quirky, unusual selections. Our fave was this light cookie made to look like a peach that was filled with cranberries and cream cheesey stuff-so good! The experience was fun overall, but the server was a bit grumpy! We’ll go back for the dessert, but will probably skip the meal. b

A friend said we should go to this place and grab lunch. I think that dinner here would be a better bet. It’s an interesting little place. We got our order to go, and it was fairly quick considering they made me a lasagna. It came with soup and bread as well, which is a plus. The minestrone was good. The bread needed more garlic. The Lasagna was really quite good, and I think it would have been better piping hot on a plate inside the restaurant, rather than in a to go box 10 minutes later at my desk. Even so, it was good. The noodles were cooked right. The meat sauce was tasty, and I was full by the end of my meal. Time to push away from the board and back off my belt one hole.
