KIMBAP! Why was I not made aware of the existence of such a simple and delicious creation? Sure, I’d come across the pre-packaged variety at Korean markets. But, it perplexed me. Was this supposed to be sushi? Where was the fish? I plead ignorance on these remarks. Sushi is great. But when I’m in the mood for something a little heartier, and a little more substantial, it’s clearly all about the KIMBAP. Although I had encountered it before, I was not a fan. The supermarket variety had turned me off. Why was there so much rice and so little filling? And why was it so damn flavorless? But when I found myself in front of this simple little spot, their adorable cartoon kimbap logo and appetizing photos lured me in. We ordered the spicy squid, bulgogi and spicy tuna kimbap. And, they were a revelation! Unlike the times I’d tried it before, it was not at all bland. The proportion of filling to rice was just right. The veggies were fresh, the rice was perfectly chewy and the beef/squid/tuna was beyond what I expected. All three varieties were great. If I had to rank them, I’d say I enjoyed spicy squid the most, followed very closely by the tuna. Bulgogi was excellent as well, no complaints at all. What’s NOT to like? Cheap, filling, flavorful AND made to order?! I’m not ashamed to admit that I’d just a little obsessed with kimbap right now. And while I’m sure to be eating it at a variety of different restaurants in the future as well, My Mom’s Take-Out holds a special spot in my heart for introducing me to what kimbap is supposed to be like.

Oh My God. How I praised My Mom’s Takeout to everybody I knew, but then unfortunately, My Mom’s Takeout did not live up to the great expectations of my last review. I tried last year Christmas time and it was still OK, but sadly the quality of the food has gone down since the management switch from last year. Sorry, but I won’t be coming back here. The cook doesn’t know how to cook and did not give us satisfying answers. We ordered a Tuna Kimbap first. It was OK — no problems. Then, we ordered the special Dok Bok Kee as I introduced in my last review. It was way too spicy and the eggs yolks were mushy. When my husband complained to the female cook, her answer was that this is the way she always makes it and that’s how it is. When my husband asks if she could dilute the spice, she said no. My husband can take a lot of spice so if he said it was bad, it was bad. We decided to pack it up instead and order a bulgogi kimbop, I think. When it came, my husband took a bite and spit it out. There were carrots in there and it was raw! I ate it and thought it was weird too. Again, we had to bring it back and the cook hesitated to try it, but instead showed us how fresh her carrots were in a container. Then, she tried a piece of our carrot and spit it out. She did not know why the carrot was raw. She offered to make another one, but at this point, we had enough of bad food and we agreed not to pay for the bulgogi kimbop, but paid for the rest. Meanwhile, customer service lacked because every time we needed something, we had to go up to the counter to speak to her because she didn’t automatically come to us. I was there around 4:30 on a Saturday, but there were no dine in customers, but I did see a bunch of people paying at the register when I came in to the restaurant. I miss the old management so much. My Mom’s takeout can’t be saved at this point. To top it off, we brought the Duk-Bok-Ki back home and ate some of it for dinner. The next morning, both of us had stomachaches. This just puts the nail in the coffin. RIP My Mom’s Takeout. My husband says, this place is «done.» Don’t go there!

Usually when you think take-out in Flushing, you think Chinese. Or food Jewish people eat on Christmas. My Mom’s Take-Out is nothing of the sort. For one, it’s Korean(fast) comfort food and the restaurant isn’t so much a take-out only restaurant but a hole-in-the-wall that can allow for at least a few small groups of people for a casual meal. Casual as in, self-service utensils and cheap prices($ 5 – 12 a dish on average). Since the dishes are cheap, you can order a lot for a small group of people. I highly recommend the spicy tuna kimbap, tonkatsu and rabokki. Rabokki is super spicy, even for people who can handle spice — eat with caution. Overall, a great place for a quick, casual meal on the cheap!

Great food very nice asset for great dining in this cozy restaurant. People are very courteous and decent even though there is a sign indicating to help yourself by grabbing silverware and water on your own. We ordered fried dumplings, Udon and spicy rice cake that are significantly delicious and I must say this restaurant serves the purpose of it’s namesake. «My Mom’s Take-out»

Let me start by saying I am giving this a 3.5 out of 5. So my friend and I were walking down Northern Blvd looking for a place to eat lunch, being our first time in this area we walked until we stumbled upon the cute awning which featured a cartoon kimbab and dduk bok ki which led us to choosing this place. We stepped instead to a small setting where we were pleasantly surprised by the variety of kimbab they had since I have only seen the the vegetable kind in my neck of the woods. Also note that I just recently found out about kimbob so I pretty much only had one kind. We perused the menu and finally decided on the Pork Katsu Cutlet for myself and BBQ Beef Over Rice and Spicy Tuna Kimbob for my friend. This place is self serve and was a nice laid back place with about 10 tables. We asked for takeout but intended to eat inside so that we could take our leftovers out. When we sat down the person who took our orders at the counter came up and provided us with sauce and asked if we wanted plates. For my Pork Katsu which I never had it before, it was not what I expected since I thought that the pork would have flavor instead of it just being fried pork with barbeque sauce to dip it in. The portion was definitely not bad, I just wished that I had more rice since I had so much pork. The side salad that was also included was delicious, I loved the dressing that they drizzled over it and pretty much finished the whole thing before I started on my pork. As for my friends BBQ Beef Over Rice, I tried the beef and it was tender, juicy and just plain good. I didn’t think the onions and green peppers added much to the plate besides being decorative and being the vegetables to offset the meat. The rice portion was definitely a lot more than what I got in my Pork Katsu. The Spicy Tuna Kimbob was delicious, spicy but not overly and definitely good value considering it was only $ 5. Not only that it came with a side of soup as well as each of our dishes. I would definitely come back again and try out what I originally wanted to try which is the Spicy Rice Cake w/Ramen and fried dumplings.

More towards 3.5 stars instead of 3 A very pleasant Spanish woman greeted my friend and I late Monday night. My friend wanted to know what the sesame leaf entailed in the kimbop dish. Though she couldn’t explain to us in English, she brought over a sesame leaf to show us :) This place is cute, with lime green tables and a mismatched table by the entrance. It reminded me of when you play those games where you get to design your own restaurant and at first you can only buy the cheaper looking tables and slowly accumulate enough to buy one expensive table, so you have mismatched tables. :P Things ordered: 1. Spicy rice cake ramen noodles combo, comes with 2 hardboiled eggs, some mushrooms, fish cakes, dumplings(VERYSPICY, the spicy that will make you drink 3 cups of cold water in one sitting) 2. Spicy tuna kimbop(Probably the best dish we ordered tonight, more flavors than just spicy and it offset the spiciness of the ramen noodles.

I love their spicy rice cake with ramen noodles! It also includes some fish cakes, veggies, and hard boiled eggs. If you never had it before and cant handle spice, drink lots of water! HAHA. But on the downside, the place is very small, you can fit 2 medium size groups of people or opt to take out, but sit down is way more fresh. Prices are reasonable, good place to go casually with a few friends.

I came here on an idle Wednesday night with my sister and cousin. It was an «intimate» setting(aka small) but the staff was very accommodating, despite the language barrier. We circled 3 things off the menu to offset any confusion: the spicy tuna kimbop, the cheese dukbokki(rice cake with cheese) and the spicy ramen noddles. In hindsight, we should have ordered something else to neutralize the spices but the complimentary miso soup and tea sufficed. Everything was delicious, especially the spicy tuna kimbop. What the cheese dukbokki lacked in texture, it certainly made up for in taste. The broth for the ramen noodles definitely had that«home made» quality to it. All in all, it was a great meal. And it was such a laid back environment that we might have overstayed our welcome(oops.) I would highly recommend My Mom’s Take-Out if you’re looking for a spicy fix on an economical budget. Just don’t forget to tip! There’s a box in the front in case you forget to leave it on the table.

This place is great for good food, good portions, and good price. The spicy tuna kimbob is sooooo freak’in good. I also had the mixed seafood dish and squid dish at only around 8 – 9 bucks. Go to this place if you want good eats for less.

First off this place would have received 4 stars, if it weren’t for the service. Not sure if it was intended to be direspectful or if the employees don’t have any proper business etiquette or they simply don’t speak english but our first experience was horrible. Other than that, the real reason for the review is to not write a review to shut the place down but to actually commend them for the Beef Fried Rice. It’s pre-mixed so you can’t order it sans the beef(at least that what they told us). They can at least try to not cook the little pieces of beef too much to salvage some of the juice, but it is a great buy for just $ 8 bucks. And it could feed 2 people. Par/under-par service on one hand. Well seasoned beef fried rice for $ 8 bucks on the other. We’ll take it and hope for the best. My Mom’s Take-Out has been D&G approved!

I am addicted to their spicy rice cake WITHCHEESE! It is so incredibly yummy and they get their rice cake texture PERFECT and the spicy/sweet sauce is a perfect balance. If you get this, definitely call in the order in advance coz it takes them abt 10 – 15 minutes to make this(which is stated right on their menu)…O/wise, you might end up waiting… and the other issue is parking… very limited!

The Unilocal map, btw the way, is totally wrong. This place is on Northern Blvd around the 180s? 170s? or 160s? I can’t remember.

I ordered ramen and watched as they made it from an instant packet right in front of me. Granted, that probably is how most people’s moms actually make ramen at home, but I didn’t expect them to interpret it so literally.

I absolutely LOVE this place. My brother and I used to go there EVERY Sunday right after church. Oh my god, so good. They do Korean fast food — as in they do awesome dumplings and spicy rice cakes and pork cutlets and fried rice and noodles and the best ramen you will ever HAVE. Whenever my brother and I go, we get an order of rice cake bbokki with ramen(Mmmmmmm), some kimchi fried rice, and an order of pork katsu(thin sliced pork cutlet). It’s seriously as good as my mom making it. But I have to say, *in a whisper*(ssssssssh), sometimes better than mom’s. On cold days we always add in an order of ramen with dumplings. SOGOOD. I grabbed a menu the last time I was there JUST so I can Unilocal about it and let ya’ll know! There are only 4 tables(I think four? It might’ve been two??) inside, so mostly a takeout business… but so good. Be warned, I don’t think the operators speak much English(but you can just point at the pictures of stuff that look good, and believe me, it’s good), and there’s a $ 15 minimum on credit cards. Each dish is anywhere from $ 5.99 — $ 12.99 though, so get two things and you’re set. Oh man, my mouth is WATERING right now.
