We hired Earth First to put a wood floor in our kitchen. They did the work on time and on budget. However, that summer and every summer since the floor has buckled badly, with the boards«cupping.» I have had to trim the bottom of doors so they don’t scrape, and in one area the floor popped up so severely it knocked the trim off the wall. We called and Earth First visited, worked on the floor, and even brought a manufacturer’s representative. They all agreed that the buckling and cupping is due to the relative difference in humidity between our house and our cellar. Apparently this is not an unusual issue, but you’d have to know about floors to know about this problem. And our feeling was that a flooring company might have tested our house before installing a wood floor that would end up functioning so badly. We have no water in our cellar, and have a relatively dry house — an old farmhouse from the 1800s that is well-ventilated and very well taken care of. At no point did Earth First take responsibility for not having properly advised us about the floor. At every point, they made it seem like the floor’s issues were our fault. They were brusk with my wife, and seemed utterly uninterested in helping us out. And by the way, the rest of our house is covered in wood floors — and they have never had an issue.
