Bangin’, big chicken burritos. The owner’s were kids watching Pokemon dubbed into Spanish. I couldn’t really make out what was going on in Pokemon, but apparently there’s a bear/cat(?) guy who sings and makes everyone(literally everyone in Tokyo) fall asleep. Once everyone is asleep, the bear/cat guy takes the opportunity to draw on everyone’s faces. When I was a kid cartoons were about army guys shooting lasers at each other. Anyway, yum. Totally going back next time I’m distracted on my way to the Acme.

I was a little worried walking into Vero’s, me being a vegetarian, and them being super authentic mexican. I ordered the vegetable burrito and the man behind the counter asked me if cheese and sour cream was okay, which I really appreciated! The burrito was BIG(and only about $ 7) drizzled with sour cream, and accompanied with a little side salad. My meal was super fresh and super satisfying. Their nachos are also really good and less than $ 5!

Vero’s is a little hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot with a TV and zero ambiance. I wasn’t sure if it was worth checking out until I came across the five-star review here, so thanks again Unilocal for steering me in the right direction. I’m pretty excited that this place exists so close to where I live now. The food is cheap — $ 4.50 for a giant plate of loaded nachos, $ 6.50 for three stuffed-to-the-max tacos. A side of guacamole is $ 4, and it’s a generous fresh portion. My first visit here, I ordered both(the nachos to share), and I left with a second meal. The people who work here seem nice enough, and you’ll get mini cupcakes with your check, which are nothing special but who doesn’t like a free cupcake? I would give this place five stars except there are some items on the menu that disappoint, namely the carnitas pork which was gristly and a bit on the gross side. If you’re going to get pork, stick with the al pastor.

There are many little Mexican restaurants in S. Philly. One chilly night a friend and I walked two blocks to Vero’s. Décor was typical neighborhood restaurant. Nothing to really awe at but service was hospitable and quick. Ordered two entrees and for the price the dish was two meals combined. I had the pork el pastor burrito and was tasty. When I have another itch for a mall Mexican place, I will try another place close by.

You know how South Philly has all these tiny little Mexican restaurants now? Well, Vero’s is here to show the rest how it’s done. The tacos al pastor were some of the best I’ve ever had, and generous with the meat too. I don’t think they make the tortillas on site, but they tasted very fresh, so I know they’re local. Not bad for $ 6.50! Try the jamaica(pronounced«ha-MY-ka,» it’s a type of iced tea made from hibiscus) — Vero’s take on this Mexican & Caribbean favorite is tart & strong, not overly sweet. The nachos are the *BEST* in Philly, smothered in beans, hot melted cheese, queso fresco, and spicy steak(not freakin’ hamburger, ugh), then covered in the freshest pico de gallo you could ever hope to find outside of your mama’s kitchen. At $ 4.50, they’re great to share as an app or as an economical & filling meal for one. Add a generous side of guacamole for $ 2. Theirs is as spicy as it is creamy, much to my delight. But please, save room for the flan! It gives my own Abuela’s a run for the money… I can’t believe I’m saying that. Dang, now I’m hungry. Good thing they’re open until 10pm!
