First time coming here it was pretty laid back nice patrons and nice bartenders. The drinks were half priced because word a Tuesday special. The décor is pretty dark I didn’t stay long enough to notice much else just one drink and then I left. Sorry guys I’ll update when I go home again.

Draft beer update! Coors light & Yuengling. Also, I made a request for an apple cider and now they keep Angry Orchard in stock:) for only 3.75. I love the fact that this place listens to its customers and allows me simple pleasures while never having to worry about over spending. :)

Peaceful place to unwind. Weekly special shot and beer only 4 bucks. Free Wi-fi. Pool table. Bartenders are very friendly. 2 large HDTV’s. Internet juke box which means you can find practically every song under the sun. Customers are friendly. Starts to get busy after 8pm or so. Nice place to make new friends especially if you want to keep up on whats going on

I’m from around the general neighborhood & have been coming to this place off & on for years. The place was kinda blasé going back a few years but my recent visits have been way better & more fun in general. The bartenders are pretty cool in general, especially the Friday/Saturday night bartender; a real sweetheart. The beer selection is fairly decent; Sam Adams seasonals, Dogfish, Bud Limes, Heineken, etc. Pool table & flat screens, good jukebox, mixed crowd in general but always friendly, & you can chill outdoors on their patio furniture till about 9 or 10 pm which is always nice. It’s a really casual, laid back spot to chill at in general & not a bad default bar at all. Most of the other bars in the area are very«clique-y» which make them a bit more uncomfortable to hang in, but I don’t get that vibe at all from this place.

Cheap drinks. Great bartender late night. Manny & Phils is a very good corner bar with a slightly rougher clientele than you’ve been accustomed to, but once you walk through doors, you’re the same as everyone else. I’ve had several of the most interesting conversations I can remember that past couple of times there. My wife and I are always treated with respect. I’ve not yet mustered the courage to try the«One and Done»… But it’s gonna happen soon. I’ll report back.

@ jack r. wtf? get shot? i live 15 seconds from this spot and you made my hood sound like berut. this place is fun. great people watching. the bartender is always nice. i am by no means a regular. but treated as such. my friend jose and i pop in once in a while because it is exactly in between our houses. i will admit, i am usually the only white girl in the joint. but so what? the crowd is a mix of everything else but white.(anytime that i have been there). the patrons are always cool and involve you in anything theyre doing. pool, music, sports, converstaions. this is a place to go to make new friends, hook up with old ones. i will say, this aint glamorous. phillys full of fancy spots where joey nobodies pretend to be somebodies. no one is pretending to be anything here. shit is real. and funny. and you feel a sense of community here. not pretense. jark r… i’m sure many & phils hates you too.

Wow. I guess I have been away from Philly for too long. When I read that this place was a dive bar I imagined the place might not be the cleanest, the clientele may be older drunk men, and the bartenders are surly and mean. What I didn’t foresee was that I might leave the establishment fearing for my life. Seriously, the corner where this bar sits is one of the bleakest I’ve seen in a while. It is ugly and desolate. The people who populate the neighborhood are brutish and angry. It feels isolated from modern society, as though it exists in its own provincial bubble apart from the rest of the 21st century. The night I was there it was a nice out and so my date and I sat outside with our drinks, but we had to leave after an argument in front of the bar’s door seemed to be escalating into something more than words. «Let’s go, I don’t want to get shot» is just something you say when you’re having a nice relaxing evening. I picked this bar because it got a couple good reviews here on Unilocal and it seemed like it was the only place to have a drink near the Riverview movie theater, but I seriously have no idea what the reviewers were smoking. Well, they were probably smoking something they bought from the corner of Manny and Phil’s pub, actually. The only reason I didn’t give this place 1 star is because the bartender was a super sweet woman who was very nice to me, but she was no reason to suffer through this nightmare of a bar.

The farther south I move in Philadelphia, the more and more I love really shitty bars that most people would be afraid to go to. Being as I now live in Pennsport, I have a SURPLUS of shitty bars with shitty beer that advertise shitty cocktails on special. The one that has stolen my heart the most, though, is Manny and Phil’s. I too was one afraid of this place. I’ve seen my fair share of the local drunks stumble in and out of here at 2 in the afternoon, as well as some shifty characters hang around well into the night. Fortunately for me, this alllll changed during one of the epic snowstorms this past winter when my friend and I decided to buy some 40s before we got snowed it. We walk in and the place is literally dead. There is not a single person there and frankly, I understood why. There was a good 10 inches of snow on the ground already. We ended up talking to the bartender for a bit about how unfair it was that her boss was making her stay open, drank a few lagers and shots, and decided to play a game of pool. In the process, a girl runs into the place and has the following conversation with the bartender: Girl: Hey do you have a knife? I have to go cut some guy Bartender: I don’t have a knife but I have this pen… Girl: That works [she proceeds to run out of the bar] My friend and I looked at each other and knew that this place was the best place in the world. Since then, I usually still go there just to buy 40s but my roommate and I go enough that we’re recognized now. Every now and then we’ll sit at the bar and have a few beers, which isn’t the best selection but they always have seasonal Sam Adams, but I usually keep it for special occasions. I love this place, I really do, but I prefer to remain an outsider in terms of the clientele. It’s much more interesting to be left alone in the sea of regulars because you get to see and hear so much more. Also they have outdoor seating now and are«dog friendly» at those tables. Weird, but oh so cool.
