I had a lovely brunch here last Saturday. We should up around 1 pm and were quickly seated outside. If you want to be seated inside, you need to have your whole party present. It was really nice outside, so we were happy to dine out there. Their $ 10 mimosas are awesome. They a actually give you a mini champagne bottle, so it comes out to two mimosas. Definitely with it. I ordered the breakfast nachos. They were more like chilaquiles with a lot of chips and less eggs. Nevertheless, they were quite tasty. The spicy chorizo is definitely spicy. I would watch out when ordering this dish because my mouth was on fire, and I usually can handle spice. The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is cute and cozy. Try it out next time you’re in the area!

The food was really good. I got egg Benedict and my boyfriend got an omelette. This is our second day in Philly and our experience with food in Philly in the 1st day was not really good, even though we went to high rated restaurants in Unilocal. But this restaurant is exception. I would highly recommend it. My boyfriend is very critical when it comes to food, but he really likes food here.

After a long day under the heavy rain, of having fun down South Ninth Street, why not escape to a sit-down nice spot. The birthday girl, Kathleen D, and I along with other friends, were eager to escape the busy Italian Market Festival, and I was getting han. gry! Hawthornes Biercafé had everything I needed, with its friendly staff, great service and delicious meal. I ordered a classic Steak Frites, which was enhanced by truffle oil, and I totaly got my meat and potatoes fix. FYI Hawthornes Biercafé, is half eatery, and half beer shop(Really? Oh yes, they even offers growlers of beer to go.) So, I’m going back, maybe for breakfast/brunch on sofa next to the fireplace(… and now we’re talking.) Four solid Unilocal

I came here before. Their foods are great! Simple yet delicious. The amazing thing is that they have 6 fridges filled with beers! All different kind from different countries. Over hundreds of them! You can never try all of them! Today they hate having a block party til 8pm! Beers are served on the street! There are over a hundred people there at 3 pm already! It’s so nice they have this! They are also serving snacks like French toast sticks and soft pretzels. They are yummy! Nice weather for block party today!

I got the Chicken & waffles & my partner had gotten the steak and eggs !! So delicious! Was hoping to get the hot mess potato but unfortunately they only serve it on week days. Other than that, everything was fantastic !!

I was in Philly for the weekend, and given that this was one of the first eateries my friend recommended, I decided to give it a shot. The restaurant is located in the corner amongst huddles of residential brick buildings, but what makes it feel even more homey is the little fireplace inside. Additionally, from the seatings to the décor, everything is simple but comfortable. I arrived at lunch time on a weekday, and so I browsed through the weekday brunch/lunch menu(surprise!) Given how hungry I was, I should’ve gotten the safest and my go-to choice at most brunch places — the omelette. However, since I was traveling, I decided to be ultra adventurous and went with the Hot Potato Mess– I mean, doesn’t that name just sound so appetizing? When the Hot Mess came, my heart sunk. Don’t get me wrong, it looked great despite its name, but it looked heavy, much heavier than what I had imagined a potato and egg dish would be. The food itself wasn’t disappointing, but beware of the spicy-looking salty sauce on the side! Spicy-looking salty sauce is the«homemade garlic hot sauce» mentioned in the menu, but it’s wayy more salty than it is spicy. I ended up ditching the sauce altogether, and only managed to finish half of my meal because it was a big portion & also because I was drinking a lot of water(some of the potato chunks were pretty loaded on sodium too) Since I’m not a beer person, I can’t comment on that aspect at all. And even though the Hot Potato Mess dish I had didn’t make a strong impression like its name did, it was good enough for me to give this place at least 3 stars. +1 star for the nice service and cozy feel!

I don’t remember what I got, but I remember being very pleased. I went with two friends and we all split a few dishes together. This is definitely a hipster hang out in a cool neighborhood with not much more around. Go check this place out!

This little place was around the corner from our B&B and we are so glad we chose it for our last night’s dinner in Philly! The food was delicious and the beer selection unbelievable. I had the braised short rib latkes and my fiancé had the steak frites. Both were so tender and amazing and we polished it off with their Hawthorne Shandy. We will definitely come back if in town again!

Maybe one of our new #1 brunch spots! I got the SOS which I am definitely a connoisseur of in the city and it was the best I’ve had in a long time. Alex got the open faced biscuit with sausage gravy and chicken which was also quite good. Mine was definitely a better value at $ 9 compare to his $ 15 but all in all very good! Love the atmosphere

I love beer. And this place has them! There is a huge refrigerated section at the rear of the restaurant. View the selection and give the waitstaff your table number to add the beer to your dinner bill. Growlers are available as well. The restaurant is trendy and it can get noisy with thr voices and music. Its a great neighborhood restaurant with twenty-somethings, hipsters, to toddlers to mid-lifers. Very casual. I enjoyed my meal. There werent many dinner choices. Either way I enjoyed the meal and will return.

This has gotta be the place that has the most beer and wine. And it’s not even like a fancy place that charges a whole lot. It’s a place that serves burgers and stuff. You can go in and just sit at the fire place and grab a drink with your friends. They have beer from Japan, from China, from Canada and etc… Their food are great too! Made to order. This place is great! you can also get beer to go and it’s cheaper to go! So u can go in and grab a beer or two to go for dinner

I am so in love with Hawthornes, its palpable. I jump at the chance to brunch there anytime I can! Their menu has the basics, the not so basics, and the very creative(i.e. this months pancake is Mint Chocolate Chip). There is absolutely something to please everyone, with very fair prices. I have only ever gotten absolutely delicious food here. This morning I had 2 eggs over medium(perfectly cooked) with sharp cheddar cheese and a homemade biscuit with butter and raspberry preserves. If I could, I would pick up one of these biscuits every morning. It was salty, buttery, and crumbly, like a biscuit should be!!! The inside of this restaurant is gorgeous. It has somewhat of a southern charm to it. When its nice out, they open up the windows, and you can bask in the sunshine and get the breeze without having to sit outside. This is truly my favorite place to brunch in the city. Hawthornes, you keep it real.

Hawthornes is a great neighborhood spot. We live two blocks away but had never been there for dinner. The beer menu is extensive and the draft list is full of craft beers which is great if you’re a huge beer fan. I’m not a big beer drinker but still ordered one because of the variety I probably wouldn’t get most other places. I like that you could add a variety of items to the burgers. I got the house burger with a fried egg(bacon and avocado are also available). It was very good. Juicy with good flavor. Sometimes burgers can be greasy to the point where it’s difficult to keep it in one piece and the bread gets soggy. This burger did not have any problems and was great by all counts. She got the Meaty Latke but it was not anything extraordinary. The short rib was dry and I had to finish it for her. The potato pancake and the sauce were the best parts of this dish so it loses points as the main part of the dish was outdone by its sides. If you are a big fan of short ribs, you can give it a try and see if they cook it better for you but I would not recommend. Service was fine for a quiet Thursday evening. No complaints. Exactly what you’d expect. If you’re in the area, give it a shot. Points for: drink menu/beers, burger and add on choices, Meaty Latke sides/sauce. No points: Meaty Latke Short Rib.

Came here for brunch and ordered the south of the border and one red velvet pancake — one of the specials — because when brunch, I brunch hard. Both were amazing. The food came quickly and the waitress was friendly and attentive.

Huge fan! Great neighborhood gem. The reason — you just can’t get a bad meal here. Whether it’s dinner, lunch or brunch — their menu and execution is always perfect — and the food taste’s is always above-average. And the servers are always on top of things and very friendly. It was great before the fire — and once they reopened, it was like they didn’t miss a beat, even though it was about a year until the building was rebuilt. The ownership is clearly on top of their game.

I love the food at Hawthornes but their service can be sketchy at times. I have been to Hawthornes a half dozen times over the past 5-ish years, mostly for brunch. Below is what I have summarized regarding the fare: Delicious: — Huevos Ahogados — Biscuits & Gravy — The Crabby Dick — Breakfast Nachos — South Of the Border — Fried Chicken & Waffles A-OK Selections: — Breakfast Sandwich was nothing special. — Hawthornes Omelet: the short rib and onions were not the best compliment to the eggs. — Steak & Eggs: same issue as the omelet. It is surprising that I have dined at Hawthornes as many times as I have recently, considering the experience that I had the first go-around… A group of 5(all very petite people — why am I telling you this? Don’t worry, it will become important later into my story) of us arrived for brunch and we were told that we would have to wait until a larger table opened up. We saw that there was an open 4-top in the dining room(and no-one else was waiting) so we asked if we could just squeeze an extra chair at that table. We were told no «because it would impede the walk-way». Although we were annoyed, we decided to wait around for a larger table to open up. About 5 minutes into our wait, a group of 4 people came in(one man with them was morbidly obese). Sure enough, they were seated at the 4-top that we had requested, and the large man was impeding the walk-way much more than we would have. After that scene we decided to leave and go somewhere else. It was a few years before I agreed to return to Hawthornes, and actually got to taste their delicious food. I should also mention that they have a large bottle beer selection in addition to the draft list.

This place is the birthchild of the God of appetizers and any person who wanted something besides domestic light beer with their meal. Was thrilled to be seated right away on a Friday night. Food was brought in minutes, a testament to their above average service. Ordered seven dishes and truly loved 4 – 5 of them. Notables include a mushroom-based special, the shrimp guacamole(refreshing and the right blend of a ceviche style shrimp), and the spring rolls(wanted to buy the dipping sauce it came with). The wings were amongst the best I have ever had. The chicken was crispy yet juicy with a simple mouthwatering garlic buffalo sauce. The beer selection is fantastic and is rivaled only by places like the foodery. I definitely want to come back here for some of their special beer events.

Just move back to the neighborhood. Been here once. Trying it again today. Still really good! Music was so sound when we walked in but they turned it down after we mentioned it. They had like 10 speakers on the wall omg. Food is great. Their system is a bit weird with all the beer they have on the wall. They seat you down and serve you food but you pay at the register after they bring you the check. Hahhaha very interesting.

We were here a couple of weeks ago for my brother’s graduation from college dinner. First, I love Philly. Second, this place is a gem. The environment is so chill and cozy. So many craft beers to choose from ranging from stouts to IPAs. Don’t be fooled, they also serve drafts! The food is just as good as the beer they serve! We had quite a large group of people, and our server did not falter. The staff was amazing with us and gave us quite a large area of the restaurant! We had quite a lot of appetizers including the Mediterranean Plate, Wings, Spring Rolls, Artichoke Crostini, Goat Cheese and Truffled Mushroom Croquettes, and the Chorizo Meatballs. All of these appetizers were delicious and were definitely made with love. I really enjoyed the Artichoke Crostini. The artichokes were perfectly seasoned along side the ricotta, roasted red peppers, and balsamic reduction. I could have kept helping myself to the appetizers. For my entrée‘ I ordered the Open Faced Falafel Sandwich. The pita was soft and fluffy which complimented the Mediterranean meal perfectly. The falafel was delicious, the best I have ever had by far. The serving size is not for the meek! I was able to eat the rest for lunch the next day and enjoy it all over again! Hawthornes’ was a great find and the next time we visit Philly, we will definitely be coming back! Especially when it’s warm and we can sit outside.

Hawthorne’s is definitely a smashing spot hidden in South Philly. The interior, especially now during the holiday season, is quite charming and quaint. The menu abounds with a range of options to please everyone(which actually means it’s too broad, but I digress). I will say that the falafel is perhaps some of the best I’ve even had. However, some quirky policies really hurt this place from being a stellar establishment. For example, their beer pricing. For one reason or another, they’ve decided that the beer should be cheaper if you are grabbing it for take out than for dine in. The justification is that it incentivizes you to bring some home… but this has the reverse affect on many that I’ve talked to… which is, why buy the beer if you’re eating in when it’s $ 1-$ 2 more? What the owners should do is find a common equilibrium that offers incentive to both types of customers.

Man I love Hawthorne’s. Here are four reasons: 1. Breakfast. Ambitious dishes, enormous portions, and lots of coffee. 2. Lunch. Sandwich and burger menu is on point. They had a burger in the running for best burger in Philadelphia contest. I don’t know if it won. It should have. 3. Dinner. Entrees are creative and delicious. If you want, add a cheese plate. 4. Drinks. Grab a brew off the draft list, or grab one of hundreds from their beer fridges. If you want, sit by the fire with a beer and enjoy life. Add good service to the mix, and Hawthorne’s is a great find.

This place lives up to the memory. Moved out of the area shortly after the fire and finally made it back today — this time for brunch. The chicken and waffles were amazing. The huevos Abogados were like a Mexican shakshuka and were very good. The biggest highlight was the café something or other — basically boozy coffee. French press with cinnamon cream rum. Coffee will never be the same again. It was everything I thought it would be and more. The only thing missing this chilly morning was the fire. Maybe next time.

Came for early dinner with a friend. I ordered the Tuscan chicken based on the server’s recommendation and was not disappointed. It was slightly salty but I think it was due to the sundried tomatoes but the chicken was cooked perfectly. They also have a great selection of beers to drink there or take away. My only complaint is that the restaurant was too warm. There’s a cute fireplace that was roaring. Since my friend and I had dressed for the weather with sweaters, we were way too hot once inside. It was a welcome relief when the door would open and let outside air in. However, that door will be annoying in the winter. The restaurant needs one of those plastic porch things to block the cold air from coming in during the cold months.

They don’t take reservations for brunch. My boyfriend and I got here at 1pm on a Sunday. The host said the wait would be half an hour but we were seated in about 10 min, so that was nice. I ordered turkey BLT off of the lunch menu, loved it. It came recommended by our waitress, and from the toasted multigrain bread, to the brie cheese, it did not disappoint. He ordered South of The Border off of the brunch menu and wasn’t as satisfied. The whole dish had a delicate presentation, but the tortilla was so crispy, it breaks easily and there is no good way to eat it. The portion was also smaller than expected. We sat outside since it was nice out that day. The inside décor looked nice too, has a winery feel to it. Will probably come back again to give it another try!

I wasn’t really a brunch person until Hawthornes. Arriving in time to see the somewhat large crowd waiting outside for a seat instilled confidence that our choice was probably going to work out for us, even if the wait didn’t. After putting our names in, we decided to hang out by the bar for the 1st come open seating. As luck would have it, that option probably cut down our wait by at least 10 minutes. On to brunch, we loved everything we saw and heard about The Crabby Dick and also watched too many people order the Chicken Steak Special to not get one ourselves. Neither disappointed while both changed my opinion about brunch. The Chicken Steak was easy to cut with just a butter knife and The Crabby Dick was totally loaded. I’d recommend them both and won’t begin to try and describe them, so better just check out my pictures. Hawthornes also offers a small shop for beers in the event you’re looking for a beverage. Sunday morning isn’t typically a time I start drinking, but their selection had me rethinking my decision. Service was just plain awesome, with great opinions shared and honest advice versus trying to steer us towards more expensive plates. Word is already out that Hawthornes is great, especially for brunch, so I have no fear that recommending you visit will mean my spot in line is further back. I know better now and will get here early for my return trip(s)!

We had been so disappointed w a recent breakfast choice that I was hoping to make up for my recommendations. And boy did this place more than make up for the day before. We ordered the crab cake sandwich, chicken & waffles, breakfast quesadillas, and an omelette. We each had a dish & I ordered a pumpkin pancake, biscuit & turkey bacon on the side because I realy wanted to try everything! I wanted so badly to redeem myself! The pumpkin pancake with cream cheese & candied pumpkin seeds– wow! Amazing! We shared it so that we could all taste & it was a perfect portion. Everything was soooooo good. There was so much food– we joked that you couldn’t cut through the chicken without the waffle flying off your plate! But I managed. The coffee was good, the dishes were excellent & the service was friendly and fast. As we walked out, my friends commented that it was worth every penny and then some. Very well priced for the amount of food provided. I would highly recommend. I can tell you, it’s on my list to return to the next time we are in town with family & friends.

I can only base my review on hawthornes on the smells and view of the food from the kitchen window, the beer selection, my drinks, and the service. That being said this place was a great experience. Drew is one of the few people that understand the meaning of good service. He was a sweetheart and very helpful when I made my drink decision. The other ladies behind the counter were just as nice so I can’t take anything away from them but drew really got me. On to the beer selection. Great. Tap list was mostly goose island selection which I’m typically not a big fan of but they had just had a tap takeover. So I went with a Bloody Mary which was amaze and then a jai lai IPA. Loved it. Tons of cans/bottles to choose from. Plus they offer a discount if you get«beer to go». On top of my experience there I truly enjoyed the vibe. If you’re a foofy stick up ur ass type I wouldn’t recommend. If you’re a laid back food and drink lover, I would strooooongly recommend.

Ah yes coffee served hot! This place is jamorama good. Trying breakfast here is a must, and if I were to recommend a dish Hawthornes’ Chicken and Waffles is the best of the city. One entire Belgian Waffle, succlulant fried chicken off the bone, eggs benny, and a salad to boot. God Damn, any time I have Chicken and Waffles I have to compare it to Hawthornes. The waffle is so good that they could charge twenty five bucks and I still wouldn’t complain! What else to mention is that they have a full operating beer tap, beer fridges, and some mean cocktails to boot. Who doesn’t like getting shwasty at 11 am on a Sunday? The decoration is phenomenal and you can tell who ever designed Hawthrones had an eye for making a restaurant feel homey yet open. Service is top notch, but I would recommend trying to get to Hawthornes early as it is this best breakfast restaurant of Philadelphia. Shhh keep this place a secrete; P

Wow, I think I’ve found my new favorite brunch place in the entire city. Jared J and I wandered over here on July 5th, when everyone was conveniently still down the Shore for the weekend. As a result, hardly anyone was there at 9:30, although it filled up fairly well by the time we left. I loved the feel of the place – I believe the word«timeless» was bandied about. JJ and I each quickly settled on the fried chicken and waffles($ 14) – I was mostly excited because Hawthorne’s serves the chicken and waffles with eggs Benedict(a large chicken thigh, one huge waffle, two poached eggs with hollandaise, plus a salad! So much food!). I didn’t have to choose between my two favorite dishes and I was not disappointed by my dish at all. The waffle was very buttery and fluffy, while the chicken was crisp, yet still juicy. My eggs were poached perfectly, too. I couldn’t believe how fast the food came out. We waited maybe ten minutes before I was staring at the enticingly large chicken and waffles on my plate. Our server(Julia) was great and she or another server was always around to top off the bottomless coffee or our water glasses. We had no trouble getting our check(you pay at the counter – they only accept Visa, Mastercard, or cash) and then we were back on our way. I was so full that I didn’t eat again until the evening.

I am so thrilled to see Hawthornes back up and running after their fire last year. I’ve been back twice for brunch since they re-opened and, dare I say, I think it may be even better than before?! There is now wine by the bottle plus Bloody Marys and mimosas! This girl is happy. On my first visit back I ordered the SOS — cream chipped beef on toast. Looks terrifying to the unfamiliar, tastes amazing to anyone who grew up eating it! The second time I ordered Juan’s Big Burrito, minus the tortilla. So basically I chose my ingredients(cheddar, onions and bell peppers) and had some scrambled eggs with all of the extras from the burrito on the side(sour cream, avocado, salsa). This came with a heaping side of homefries. It was awesome! I’ve checked out their dinner menu and I’m excited to give that a whirl. Welcome back!
