Expected a delicious meal at buddakan and was not disappointed! Made a last minute weekday open table reservation with two friends and were seated immediately. We had a friendly, attentive, and knowledgable waiter. Everything is family style so we shared shrimp bao buns, general tso chicken dumplings, and beef fried rice. Everything was delicious! But the beef friend rice was my absolute favorite. The atmosphere is dark, quiet, and elegant. It’s a little more upscale than other Stephen Starr restaurants and definitely a good spot for a date or celebration.

3.12: Commercialized, optimized restaurant with solid food and solid vibe — but nothing extraordinary. The owners have truly engineered the restaurant: fun, unique fusion dishes like foie gras spring rolls that appeal to the basic adventurer and cozy vibe managed by a huge Buddha statue on the wall. Nothing stands out as mouthblowing though. While the dishes were fairly tasty, I sensed that the raw ingredients weren’t the best — likely in an attempt to boost EBITDA through a finely tuned strategy of concealing quality with fascinating fusions. Credits to the creator — but could be done better. Left satisfied but uninspired.

Amazing Chilean sea bass meal. It was one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten out. It was buttery & delicious. It was on top of cubed butternut squash, mushrooms & green beans. The whole combination was so mouth watering, I maybe moaned a little bit eating it. The rest of the meal was very good but not as spectacular as the sea bass. The waitress was great & the ambience was nice, even though we were seated very close to the table next to us.

5 stars for ambiance and décor. Shared pork belly bao buns and General Tso’s dumplings. Highly recommend the dumps. I liked how our plates were placed in the center table for sharing, we all had a snip bit of each plate(now that I think about it I wouldn’t have enjoyed eating my entire entrée on its own). I had the black bean scallops and they were good, the small hint of spice made for interesting flavor. Singapore noodles could have used more flavor. Drinks were alright, not worth the price. The bento box for dinner was also fun but I only really enjoyed 3⁄6 options. Service was good but not what I usually get at a Starr spot. Overall– solid place.

This place was AMAZING. The food wss seasoned well and cooked to perfection. Every course. The service was above the top. I visit many fine dining establishments in Seattle where I live and my server tonight topped them all. He was attentive, informative, helpful. The resurgent is accommodating with substitutions. It was an amazing dining experience for a solo traveler. I would go out of my way to come back if I could.

A fancy Americanized Asian fusion restaurant. The ambience and the décor are nice and intimate, service is what you can expect for the price of the food and drinks. As an Asian, I didn’t enjoy the food at all, it’s not that their food is not good, but it’s really not my cup of tea. People like this place because their food is so Americanized. If you are looking to impress your date, this is the place to go. If you want some authentic Chinese or Asian food, skip this place for sure.

I had a great dining experience here last week. I met some friends at the bar before dinner. I ordered«the strong,» which is a vodka cocktail drink with a lot of cilantro. If you’re a cilantro person, then you will love this refreshing drink. We were a big group that was seated in front of the giant Buddha. We ordered the dumplings, tempora shrimp, and calamari salad to share. The calamari salad was amazing. The calamari was perfectly fried on top of a lot of tasty greens. It’s a huge portion so great for sharing. The tempora shrimp was flakey and paired with a great dipping sauce. For dinner, I had the crab fried rice. It’s a huge portion, so again, great for sharing. There were huge lumps of crab mixed in throughout. It was soooo good that we ordered a second serving. For dessert, we ordered the donuts. The donuts are the bomb. They are covered in cinnamon sugar and paired with three dipping sauces, chocolate, strawberry, and whipped cream. Overall, a great night out with coworkers in a trendy setting and tasty food.

I came in here with high expectations. Many consider this Steven Star production as one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia. The décor does not disappoint. From the gigantic Buddha statue to the waterfall-like wall, the atmosphere is quite unique and impressive. The staff are also very friendly and accommodating. This offsets what I felt was unspectacular food. The taste simply does not live up to the high prices of Buddakan. Based on what looked good on the menu and on recommendations from the waiter, we ordered the Chilean Sea bass and cashew chicken. The sea bass seemed like a high quality piece of fish, but it was rather bland. There was just not much spice or flavor to it. The cashew chicken was the definition of average.

Went for dinner last night. I would definitely add them to my list of favorite restaurants in Philadelphia. The food and service was fantastic! This place is not for you if your pockets are not deep. The appetizers and entrées are very pricey and worth the splurge! We started out joking with the waitress about her being in medical school and her medical tattoo. When she asked if there were any Buddakan virgins, me and one other person in our party quickly raised their hands. She suggested that we order a bunch of stuff and pass them around like family-style and that’s what we did! Shrimp and pork belly Bae Bun, short ribs and crab and shrimp dumplings! Yum yum yummy. Noodles rice fish. We also had a couple bottles of Prosecco! We had dim sum donuts. They were absolutely delicious and the served with three different dipping sauce. I will definitely go back.

I came her for my birthday in February with a group of friends. The experience and food was good, but not particularly memorable. I’m not one who minds expensive dining once in awhile, but that’s only if the food is up to par with the price. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. Flavors were there, but they weren’t particularly interesting and not really any different than any other less expensive Asian cuisine places. The inside décor of course was beautiful and that’s probably what attracts most of its guests, but essentially I’m not paying for the décor – I’m paying for the food.

Ias a special treat, I took my daughter here. She has an obsession for the Starr restaurants. We walked in and there were panels w water streaming down. Very pretty. Behind us, on a far wall, was a red enclave, with a gigantic Buddha. He overlooks the entire establishment. We were seated almost immediately. Our waiter was pretty attentive. He explained the menu and that food was served family style. We started w the General Tso’s Dumplings. We both devoured these. I thought it was about to be a girl fight– with my own daughter.

Planned a bachelorette party dinner here last Saturday night and it was fantastic! Our server took amazing care of us. He got drinks to the table quickly, the food came out pretty fast, and everything was delicious! We ordered the dim sum sampler, the spring rolls and a variety of entrees. The lobster rice was a big hit, as were the scallops(amazing!), shrimp lo mein, delicious cashew chicken and suuuuper tender spare ribs. If planning for a larger group, this is a great place – they can really handle the volume and keep up with the pace. Also a fun environment(albeit loud on a Saturday night).

Buddakan is everything you’d expect from a fine dining establishment. Nice ambiance and top notch service. Our waiter was well informed on all aspects of the menu and patient. Food was timely and dishes were cleared promptly. The food is very good but nothing really blew me away. My favorite was the Spicy Rock Shrimp Bao Buns. Cooked perfectly. I also really enjoyed the crab fried rice and the sizzling short rib. The edamame dumplings are good but based on a lot of the reviews they were supposed to be the best thing on the menu. They were unique and different but I probably wouldn’t order them again. Overall, a fine experience. I think they’re hurt a bit by their own hype as expectations for most are sky high. Good place. Not necessarily a must try again but I’d certainly go back.

So happy to have finally went here, and even happier to report that it does live up to its reputation! We finally had a chance to come here with a large group and were able to order almost everything on the menu. All dishes were flavorful, delicious and impressive. The best by far was the bass, it literally melted in your mouth and tasted like whipped butter. Also, I was really impressed with all of the dumplings especially the edamame one. There are tons of meat dishes, as well as a few chicken and seafood ones, and multiple noodle and rice choices. This is like an upscale Asian restaurant/American steakhouse/super trendy club with a Buddah. My favorite dessert was the banana one actually, that tasted like cheesecake. I’m not a big doughnut person, but a lot of people liked them and all the dips they came with. Defintely check this out for a date, birthday celebration or a work event. Fun and delicious times will occur!

Wow, this WAS the place to see and be seen back in the late 90’s-early 2000’s, and it looks like not much has changed. Had only been here a couple of times, once for a friends birthday, and another on random outing where we just hung at the bar. The item to have was the edamame ravioli, but I don’t see this on the menu anymore. I suppose the edamame dumplings are now the regular, but I don’t remember there being any truffle sauce. Perhaps they upgraded and these are even better than what I recall? According to reviews, they’re still the best thing on the menu, so I guess that’s my answer. Pretty sure this is the place that introduced wasabi mashed potatoes into my life; it was wild to see these under regular kitchen lighting since they have that obvious green tint to them(haven’t found those out here yet). Always enjoyed their Wok Cashew Chicken with plum sauce along with a side of sticky rice, and never left without the dip-sum donuts, tumbling out of a take-out container with three dipping sauces(I only went for the chocolate). I guess Buddakan/Starr restaurants were my first foray into ‘modern’ dining(or as other will say, overpriced food served family-style in a trendy setting). In a way, they set me up for L.A. places like the now-defunct Asia de Cuba and Geisha House, to current Katsuya and Nobu, and New York(former?) hotspots such as Tao, Ruby Foo(now closed) to Blue Fin and Dos Caminos(among other BRGuest establishments). Great for groups, but best to make a reservation–

Since I was younger, Buddakan has been one of my favorite restaurants in Philly. The chef has always had a great assortment of Asian-fusion dishes that are amazingly tasty and things that I would never come up with on my own. The décor in this place is really cool. There’s a large buddha statue that serves as the focal point and tons of tables that are centered around it. There’s also a large«family style» table so if you’re party is large, they can usually accommodate you there, given that there aren’t too many walk ins that have taken over it. The place gets pretty loud, but if you are lucky enough to be seated upstairs, it’s a little more intimate and a great place to catch up over a terrific meal. Dishes we always get when we’re here(given there are enough people to share them with) that you should ABSOLUTELY give a try are: Crispy Calamari Salad(fried calamari and field greens tossed in a light and tangy, but not overwhelming, dressing) Miso Black Cod(the miso becomes carmelized so it’s almost a sweet taste and the cod is light and tender) Sizzling Short Rib Wasabi Crusted Filet Korean Beef Fried Rice Wasabi Mashed Potatoes Chinese Eggplant Wok Charred Broccoli We’ve tried the Scallion Chicken, but were less than thrilled and found it to be bland compared to everything else we’ve tried. Service is always polite but can be a little slow so I would make sure that you don’t have to run off somewhere if you’ve decided to dine here.

Third stop for Center City District Restaurant Week: Buddakan for $ 20 three-course lunch. First impression: wow. From the waterfall to the giant Buddha in the dining room, and fun designs on the chairs, super trendy place. For my meal I chose the Thai Chicken Salad, Seared Ahi Tuna Tataki, Chicken Dumplings, and the Chocolate Mousse(it was called Crying Chocolate or something). It was presented with the first three items in individual small bowls on one long plate, very pretty aesthetic and good portions, not too filling, and the flavors were on point! Of course, penultimate Asian Fusion means I had Thai, Japanese, AND Chinese food represented in my meal. The dessert wasn’t really Asian inspired at all??? The other dessert was like Chinese donuts with dipping sauce, which was also a stretch. More than a great deal for $ 20, glad I could try such a fancy spot during Restaurant Week.

Came here for restaurant week and had the chance to finally get a taste of Buddakan, from which numerous friends have told me was a solid restaurant. I had the chance to try their famous chicken and ginger dumplings which were tasty and tender with not too overpowering hints of ginger throughout. What seems to separate these dumplings from many other dumplings I have eaten is that fact they are steamed versus boiled or fried, which are the more common ways of cooking dumplings. All of their seafood was pretty spot on — my favorite if you’re looking to decide what to order is definitely the chilean seabass. It really melts in your mouth with every bite and is complimented well with the vegetables cooked into fish. The sweet and crispy jumbo shrimp was also a highlight and tasted very fresh, tender, and juicy as well although I wish it had a side of vegetables or carbs to go with it. Overall, service here is solid — everyone treats you professionally and is knowledgeable of the menu or any specials for the day. This place does put a dent in the wallet so would come back only for special occasions. Overall portion sizes are on the smaller side, where quality is emphasized over quantity. If you’re a big eater like me(no joke!), I recommend eating a little beforehand to compensate for the smaller portion sizes. Otherwise, enjoy!

Walked out not disappointed at all. Tuna tartar spring rolls are a MUST. Served with crispy shallots and sweet chili ponzu. You will be wanting more. So we got another round The edamame dumplings in the truffled shallot broth was also a tasty treat, but I wasn’t too crazy about the crab/lobster dumplings with ginger-lemongrass ponzu. It was a bit briny for my liking. The wasabi tuna tataki with ginger Somen noodles was delicious — seared to perfection. The Kung Pao Monkfish with sweet chili-Szechuan sauce was also a winner. Don’t forget to try the mashed potatoes with wasabi crème fraîche and chives! So good! Service is also not of concern — friendly, clean, and attentive. Lobster fried rice with saffron is next on my list to try, but please feel free to message me on any feedback regarding it. I can’t wait to try that tuna tartar spring rolls(again! And again!)
