Every Saturday until 2PM there is an Amish produce stand on the corner of Lancaster and Powelton.(I honestly can’t say when he actually opens, since I’m never awake before 10 on Saturdays). He’s there all year round, without fail, and carries all sorts of great stuff for those who want something healthier than cafeteria food. He also is open right outside the Penn bookstore on Wednesdays but I don’t know his hours at that location. He generally carries a good selection of in-season veggies, fruits, and even flowers sometimes. He also carries fresh produce like bananas that I doubt he grew himself, but they’re good anyways. During the winter months he tends more toward baked and canned goods, and they are pretty good too. The banana bread is to die for, and I love the chicken pot pies(slightly less so now that they’re dark meat but still pretty good). He doesn’t have quite the selection that you can find at the Reading Terminal Market but it’s a lot closer and sometimes cheaper as well. My absolute favorite product he carries is the cider. This is not your standard grocery store cider that tastes sharp and sort of sour. This is real, fresh, sweet apple cider, just like they make at the Strite’s orchards near where I grew up. The taste varies slightly from season to season, and it doesn’t keep for more than a week or so, but it’s worth it, because this is the good stuff. Shake before pouring. Just as important, the guy is nice and friendly, and I’ve had nothing but good experiences shopping at his stand. The people who help him out, like the Amish kid(probably his son), are also nice, and always helpful and happy to see me. I was a little bit short once and they let me make it up to them next week, since they know me and they know I’m good for it, and I’m there practically every single week. So for anybody who needs to get the Drexel Dining Hall grease(or Pizza grease) out of their system, this is the place to go.
