8th & Market Patco High Speed Line

I’ve been through this stop many times going back to 2009. I have actually gotten off this stop before and I like how Burger King is right there once you get off the steps. There are times you see people do performances here like sing or play some type of instrument which doesn’t bother me at all. Getting off here is close to Independence Hall, FOX29 news building, Ross, etc.

Cool futuristic looking benches on the market frankfort side. However they are slightly impractical and uncomfortable.

Connects center city Philadelphia to Camden County NJ with connections available to Broad Ridge Spur and Market Frankford Line. Also goes west to 16^th/​Locust.
It’s not clean or luxurious but it gets the job done.

8^th and Market is the first active station in Philadelphia for the Patco trains (Franklin Square, or the «ghost station» is technically first, but it’s been closed for twenty years). This is the stop you need if you’re going to do any of the touristy things in Old City or if you’re planning on going to the Convention Center. After this stop, Patco’s rails go south to Locust, so you’ll have a long walk to get back to Market if you stay on the train.
This stop can be confusing if you are new to the station. If you’re at the back of the train, the easiest way to get to the street is to go through the Mellon Independence Center, which drops you on 7^th. If you get off at the front of the train, there is a very obvious outdoor staircase that actually drops you on 8^th and Market. There are also easy connections to the Market-​Frankford and Broad Street subway lines – just follow the signs.
Be sure to read the signs on the tunnel walls to see which direction your train is coming, because trains use either of the tracks to go either direction.

So this is the 8^th St Patco stop, and it’s very convenient to say the least. It has easy connections to the SEPTA Broad Ridge Line and the SEPTA MFL line. It can be a bit shady during the night. This is the station where a man was brutally attacked by 2 men whom stole his phone and wallet, so I would be VERY cautious while using this at night. Not to mention all of the homeless people who like to hang outside the metro lines… just be careful past 9pm.

This patco stop isn’t as clean as some of the others, but it has easy connection to the Market-​Frankfurt line, making it a popular stop. Above ground, the area seems less safe than those on locust st, so i avoid it if i’m alone at night.
