Super friendly and skilled massage therapists. Good mix between deep tissue and Swedish. Knowledgeable staff deserves the full 5 stars. Even tossed in the heated rock massage for free, just because they were nice. Even offered to stay open at odd hours just to accommodate our schedules. Facilities very tired and dated, but clean. I took off one star for the facilities, but will happily go back despite that. Large municipal parking lot directly across street. Very convenient location.

I have to admit when I walked into this place for the first time, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The receptionist was friendly and offered me a glass of water. The interior felt a bit tired, like it needed a face lift. Then I was taken out of the reception area and into an elevator in a common hall an into a very charmless room. I sat in the chair and they placed my big feet in a bowl of water that was too small and a bit uncomfortable. I read a magazine, and thought I hope this gets better. And then it did. Danielle was working on my pedicure, and she was really doing a great job. I asked her to please work hard on my calluses. I had been disappointed in other salons as they do the same light overall treatment to all the patrons, no matter what their issues are. She really listened I got a top rate pedicure. the only reason I didn’t give the salon 5 stars is the interior. I hope at some time they can update it a bit and add a little more charm. that said, I am definitely going back!

We passed by Fundamentals randomly one day when in Ferndale, and a week later, my husband got me a gift certificate for my birthday. They had a July Special on the Relaxation package(50 minute massage and express facial), so I jumped on it. If I could take away a half star here, I would… but not an entire star. The one drawback was that the entry is very spartan, a bit too bright, and the receptionist seemed just a bit more interested in her bookkeeping than in me. The entry area is simple, but cute. I was offered water, though I saw that they had an adorable table set up for hot tea. The chairs are very comfortable. But they could use some curtains to make it just a bit more cozy. Compared to the spas in DC, where I recently moved from, Fundamentals is simple, much less pretentious, and adorable! It is very small, but fine. I noticed the bathroom(and noise) issue mentioned below, but either no one used the restroom or I was able to tune it out. A bit more soundproofing would be my only suggestion. My massage was from Dani, and it was AMAZING. I usually prefer a male masseuse because woman have too light a touch, but Dani was fantastic! She found my trouble areas and really worked them out, plus she did a few leg stretches. Even after the facial, I didn’t want to bother with walking, the massage was that good. The facial was also very good. Sonja used all the various creams and goops(I’m never real sure what it is they brush and smooth onto your face), and her methods were very relaxing. Overall, it was nice to leave the pretension of DC behind, and I will definitely be back!

Ahhh… the soothing sound of water. You know how some massage studios have peaceful little fountains running in the background? Due to the set-up of the massage room at Fundamentals, I did hear water whooshing… however, it turned out to be… repeated toilet flushes. Not the most relaxing noise. I’m usually pretty good at zoning out during a massage, but I just couldn’t screen that out. And as soon as I would get it out of my mind… it would happen again. The massage therapist herself was great, skilled, communicative, and applied just the right amount of pressure. She even used some hot towels to wrap my feet, which was a nice touch. In another setting(sans-repeated-flushing) the therapist herself would warrant 4 stars. However, it really seems like the studio could do something(slightly louder music? soundproofing?) to make the experience more peaceful, and with less(or no) toilet sounds.
