The Best Food Between Farmington and Crown Point — Spencer’s Bisti Food Stand July 2, 2010 found me rolling down New Mexico Route 371, headed from Farmington to I-40. Waaaaaaayyyyyyy out there between the Bisti and De-Na-Zin Wildernesses I saw a blue tarp, a pickup, some people and a camp table with two igloo coolers. Navajo Tailgate! I’d skipped breakfast, probably should have skipped lunch too given my lithe figger of late, but I was growling downtown and knew Crown Point was forty miles south. I stopped, got a chile, hamburger and onion burrito, and went absolutely crazy and had a real-thing World Cup Coca Cola. No Diet, no Coke 1, I went for the brass ring. The Spencer’s drive their stakes and set up shop at 10816.305 W and 3619.528 N. Mr. Spencer told me that not only do they have their Navajo Nation Indian Health Service Food Handler’s training, they set up at the road side most of the time. Strong point for Spencer’s burritos — the tortilla. Large, thick, soft flour, it was well cooked and made an excellent wrapper for the hamburger, onion and chiles filling. They served up two other kinds of burrito. I wanted to sample against Roland’s hamburger, chile, corn and onion burrito. I’m sorry Mr. Spencer, Roland won this round. The next time I’m headed into the Bisti Wilderness, I’ll be stopping by for some sustenance. But next time I’ll buy a water.
