The first weekend in October and June and you will find me there at dinnertime Fri, Sat and Sun. The food is absolutely outstanding – the BEST gyro I’ve ever had, and I don’t miss out on Mr. Louis’ Avgolemono soup or the pisticio. No matter what you get you will not be disappointed.

Thanks to Neal E. for posting about this festival! I’m a sucker for ethnic festivals involving food. Well, maybe just a sucker for any time there is a potential for food made by grammas since they tend to know how to do it. I figured it wouldn’t be too crowded when I stopped by, but it was a little crazy with the parking. The place had a good crowd but thankfully the lines weren’t too long. I thought it was cool that the police officers on break from directing traffic were eating and chatting with other people attending the festival. The overall festival at Saint Katherine looks to be a little smaller than the one at Saint Sophia. The food selection was pretty standard Greek festival fare. Prices were slightly lower than Saint Sophia’s. The food was very tasty. I get the vibe that the cooks at this church like their food sour based on the amount of lemon juice used in some of the dishes, but still very good.

The Saint Katherine Annual Fall Greek Festival is held at the Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church. This year marked their 46th annual festival. I’m not Greek, but I love Greek food, and a friend of mine who is Greek invited me to come out and join his family. So I did! I got there about 6:30 pm. The place was absolutely packed! Fairfax County Police were on hand directing traffic in and around the festival. I parked and walked inside the main building and found my friends. There was a Greek band playing some sort of what I will assume was traditional Greek music — lots of people of all ages were up and dancing. The lines inside the building for food were for some of the more traditional Greek dishes — while outside was a large tent where you could get Gyros, Souvlaki, Calamari, fries and such. The line was to long inside — so I went outside and got in line for a Gyro. I really wanted to try some of the other Greek foods — but I was to hungry and did not want to wait 25 minutes or so in line. After I got my Gyro and fries, I hit the beer tent and got a «Vergina» — a Greek lager and later a «Mythos» a golden Greek lager. Nothing mind blowing about these beers — but both were tasty — I’d never had either of them before. The Gyro was nothing special — a good solid Gyro with all of the trimmings. Everyone seemed to be having a really good time. There was lots of conversation, eating, drinking, dancing, and laughter. The Greeks definitely know how to party and have a good time!
